Thoughts on Black Flag - My War?
It's one of the most important heavy albums ever because it's literally the starting point for sludge metal, and it was a huge influence on everything from grunge to modern doom.
That said, it's kind of just the least-bad Black Flag album. For being one of the most important punk bands ever, I'm amazed how poorly they've aged. Especially considering that related projects like The Circle Jerks and the first Rollins Band album still sound pretty good.
in my head and my war are better than the "straight punk" stuff like Damaged etc
>it's literally the starting point for sludge metal
Oh, you mean that genre where there are like 3 good bands and a bunch of shit that is either boring or completely mis-catagorized? Yeah, I'll pass.
It's okay if you don't like it, but it's one of my favorite genres, and you should really try to be less of a piece of shit.
sludge really? maybe i’ll listen to it then, you better not be fucking with me
it's only like the three tracks, check out Flipper (superior band)
>Oh, you mean that genre where there are like 3 good bands and a bunch of shit that is either boring or completely mis-catagorized?
What are the 3 bands? For me it's Grief, Iron Monkey and Toadliquor
I agree Flipper is better, but those three tracks are pretty great
Not him, but I love Eyehategod, Buzzo*ven, and honestly a lot of those recent bands that blur the lines between sludge metal, crust punk, and atmospheric black metal, like Morrow and Downfall of Gaia.
checked and yes those tracks are great.
what flipper record do I start with?
I haven't heard it in a long time, but the 82 demos is probably my favorite Black Flag stuff.
Dystopia, The Body and let's say Accept Death
It was a really important album and honestly, I feel like it gets overlooked by not only other Black Flag albums, but also other punk/hardcore albums of the time.
I'm listening to it right now. I like it.
never understood why there’s just a random face behind the boxing glove
Black Flag have no good albums and this is one of their worst. Nobody in that band had any fucking idea what they were doing or even just what they were trying to do. Same goes for Spot, who should have been banned from ever touching a mixing board at birth.
Bad times all around.
Their best album. Also In My Head was killer, along with the underappreciated pic related
Tell me entry level black flag
My War is timeless.
I only really listened to this record recently. I'd been into 90's hardcore and couldn't find much about early 80's stuff that interested me. It just seemed crude and basic. I'd heard BF with stuff like TV Party, Six Pack, and Rise Above, which along with Rollins Band just seemed juvenile and really cringey lyrically. I think I heard Nervous Breakdown with Keith Morris and I started to dive back into it. So much of Henry Rollins lyrics and his delivery of them are so embarrassing. But his intensity combined with the sludge songs on side B are just incredible. Almost instantly became one of my favorites. Title track is better than I gave it credit for, too. The other songs are mostly awful along with most everything else I've heard from Rollins BF.
I'll have to check out the bands mentioned and since I've been looking for anything like Nothing Left inside, Three Nights and Scream ever since.
>Henry Rollins
To be fair to Henry, Black Flag were fucking dire long before he joined. Ever heard The First Four Years? Utter shit.
Yeah, a lot of those songs are great. Basically a decent impression of the Stooges.
its good
If someone asked what hardcore punk was I'd probably point them to this album's title track
Fuckinnnn Toadliqour
Sludge is like an other genre it has some really good stuff and a whole bunch of clones and trash.
Last 3 tracks are great, but it hasn't aged well at all. Only stuff by Black Flag I liked desu.
black flag ruled
overrated burger pop
