Fuck here I go I guess. Okay so I was like 19 or so at the time, and I went to a Kool Kieth show and the ticket said it came with a meet and greet so I was like nice. Anyway the show ends and there doesnt seem to be any meet n greet happening, but people just kept coming up and freestyling on stage for a while and they were pretty good so I hung around for like an hour and eventually I go over an employee and I'm like what's the deal with the meet and greet and he like didnt know there was a meet and greet but told me to just walk backstage and see if hes back there or whatever. so I go back there and one of the guys hanging out with kool keith asks me before letting me in if I have any weed for kool keith and I'm like no I dont have any weed for kool keith so already I'm feeling kinda sketched out. Anyway I get back there and hes sitting on this couch and beckons me over to sit on a couch next to him so I do. The couches are like arranged such that they meet in a corner with a table and lamp. It's super weird. I asked how I was doing and I said I had an awesome time at the show. I had some questions for him but he gave incredibly limited answers to everything I asked, like 3 word no substance replies that allowed for no conversation. I should mention that the room was packed with like 5 guys who all seemed to know him, and I was the sole white person present. Anyway after trying to talk about something with him for a while and it basically being like talking to a brick wall, I just ran out of things to say. I really wanted more out of the interaction though so I made the mistake of sticking around for a while anyway. So like basically he goes back to talking to the guys there who it seems like all know him, and I just kind of sit there hoping for a way to jump into the conversation that just never comes. As I am uselessly waiting, I am taking in the scene. The room is incredibly dimly lit, the lamp sort of between us in the only light in the cramped room

The lamp is very dim, and because the only strong light is coming in from the next room over, Keith himself is shrouded in shadows like some kind of guy in a neo noir, especially when he reclines way back on his couch, which he does often because he seems to be very sleepy, or lazy, like he was either very tired or under the influence of something, maybe drunk, I couldn't say. His speech with the people he is talking to, when I can make out what he is saying through the ebonics, is very dull, and he seems out of it. He mostly just responds with "yeah"s to them. He is basically too out of it to engage meaningfully, so I turn my attention elsewhere. There is a plate of snacks in the center of a coffee table in front of both me and Keith, the central draw of which is an absolute fuckton of grapes. It looks like these grapes have been sitting out since long before the show started as all the remaining ones are like the bruised grapes you either dont eat or leave for last, and they are also a little shriveled and sad looking from having been out for many hours. anyway, Kool Keith is phased not by the sorry state of the grapes, he is downing them like a fucking machine. I wonder if I should ask before taking some grapes, but I eventually just guess the environment is chill enough that it wont matter and take some grapes. I think maybe Keith didnt like that because I can see his face in the darkness turn towards me as I do so, but I couldn't discern his expression. I continued to pop grapes for a while, leaning in and trying to listen to the ebonics conversation for anything interesting or something I could jump in on but it never came. I probably sat there eating grapes awkwardly and silently for 15 minutes, before I abruptly said "well, nice meeting you" and went home.

I went to a meet and greet for Mastodon and got to talk to each member one on one.
I had ordered a signed copy of Leviathan from Bill just a few months before, and he remembered me. Whether he was just saying so to be nice, i don't really care.

The guys in Enslaved are all hella nice, except Grutle, who desu seemed exhausted.

Janick Gers and Nicko McBrain were both mega nice to me once, the other guys don't really meet with anyone but after so many years I can definitely understand that.

The dudes in Master's Hammer are totally insane, it was a bit much for me desu.

The guys from Municipal Waste really do live up to their party reputation and are fantastic dudes.

Graveland guys seemed really cool but none of them spoke a word of English except for Darken, who was very polite but more distant.

Police aren't special, they're not heroes, they're regular people like you or me, and they're stuck in a kind of messed up situation. They have ridiculous power over random strangers and very little effective oversight and they know that just about everyone will protect them even if they screw up really bad. American police covering up their own crimes isn't just an inner city problem, either, it exists in nearly department in the country.
It's not the cop I'm worried about, it's the system that makes this kind of thing normal.
