Bands with similar styles/sounds?

Have been bingeing the shit out of neutral milk hotel stuff since I found it quite recently, along with the music tapes albums. Thought it'd make a fitting first Yea Forums post to get some similar bands or albums that might be worth a listen

I know it's a meme album okay I just like the funny saw man

Not really anything to be honest.

sufjan stevens - illinois is a nice album.

The Microphones, kinda.
Other Elephant 6 stuff

They are pretty singularly unique. Even the other members of Elephant Six don't sound anything alike.

Just check out The Microphones since The Glow Pt 2 is the silver medalist to ITAOTS

>I know it's a meme album okay I just like the funny saw man
Then fuck off, you really don't deserve to know more.

Castaways and Cutouts by Decemberists sounds a little similar, but is a 6/10 while ITAOTS is a 10/10.

Absolutely nothing, this record was a flash in the pan.

Was joking I swear, genuinely enjoy Julian Koster's playing and actually have been learning the singing saw myself because of it, and the album's brilliant even when it's just mangum singing with his guitar, just didn't want to get my ass roasted for being new to the forum xD

Shit tagged wrong post, see above reply

>The Glow Pt 2 is the silver medalist to ITAOTS

ITAOTS is a better album, but the high points of The Glow Pt. 2 are probably better. Both are astonishing, though.

I have no idea because the only Neutral Milk Hotel I like is their instrumental songs

Andrew Jackson jihad, sometimes

Not a fan of those mangum vocals?

Listening to that album I'd say that the instrumentation is brilliant and of a similar quality but almost more polished, though from what I've heard so far the vocals are a lot less memorable

Here's my advice: run away from this shithole as fast as you can.

To answer your question, start with the bands of the people directly related to NMH. You already discovered The Music Tapes, now move on to The Gerbils (the band of their horn player) and A Hawk and a Handsaw (the drummer).

the track "honest, dude" off this album is really good and reminds me of nmh a good amount. if you like it you should listen to the whole thing its a real underrated treat

How does Wilco sound like NHM?

well fuck you then

How does Wilco sound like NMH?

check out the music tapes, julian koster is the head of that band, which if you don't know is the guy who plays saw. the sound while being a lot more whimsical and carnival-like fits in with the nmh sound

would rec marry's voice

There's nothing unique about itaots. Try listening to folk rock from the 60s.

>implying jeff mangum isnt just a second rate john darnielle

Not bad, I was gonna post the jordaan mason and the horse museum myself, they're like a mix of NMH and AJJ
Imagine being this fucking stupid

recs? i've only listened to jim croce

I would argue itaots is actually a really unique album with its instrumentals and lyrics. Jeff is actually a really creative lyricist, and with the combination of horns, acoustics, banjo, and singing saw, which was all assembled in a really fun early 1900's carnival vibe. To say itaots isn't unique is simply lying, there really isn't anything like that album.

This album is pretty much a direct NMH clone but it's still decent

no

The Decemberists represent everything I hate about that indie folk rock era in the mid 2000's.

Oh you mean intelligent music?
