Learning to play an instrument as an adult

I want to learn how to play the piano but I'm already 19. Can I still get good or am I fugged?

you're right, you might as well kill yourself and start piano earlier in your next life

You can still get good, you idiot. Just don't seek virtuosity as the end goal.

I learnt guitar as my first instrument at 28 and it took about a year of dedicated practice until I was good enough that experienced players would compliment my fingerpicking. I’m 30 now and about to release my first album, have also learnt a bit of mandolin too.

You are definitely not too old at 19.

post your music?

Sure, here’s a sample of my album, four songs still being produced.

Your chances of becoming a professional musician are far lower than they would have been if you started 10 years ago (not that they are high in the first place), but as far as doing it for fun there's nothing stopping you other than your own jadedness.

pretty fucking good desu, thanks for sharing

you seriously only been playing two years?

no you're not too old!!! theres always time to learn new things, i learnt how to play guitar in about 9 months and im still learning and im 19 and i used to play piano and in my opinion piano takes longer to learn but you should go for it

Yeah man. Songwriting is what got me really into guitar, what I am playing is not massively complex but I have a knack for fast fingerpicking.

yeah, kill yourself and start playing guitar by 3 next time. you're not even an adult retard, of course you can learn to play an instrument

There's more to it than age. I had piano lessons from before I was 8 years old and kept trying until I was about 15 but never got further than grade 2 because I have cerebral palsy. I've written dozens of songs I'll never be able to play.

That’s a shame man, you should try and find a good singer and pianist to bring them to life.

not Good good but you can still learn how to play it

you can get good, just don't expect instant results, a lot of adults don't last because they're not willing to let go of their pride and take on the perspective of a child

Are you fucking joking? Just do it

In rural southeast England? Little chance, only music scene here is heavy metal pub bands and buskers trying to be Ed Sheeran

You almost certainly have a conservatory within a reasonable distance.

I’m in Fife, Scotland - I’m this guy and I can’t play piano unfortunately.

go for it, still plenty of time

Oh sorry, I misread your post, thought you were asking where I was.

You could possibly find someone on the internet and collaborate that way, it’s a shame there’s not a lot of people on the shill threads here who actually play instruments and sing, it’s largely ambient and electronic stuff.

if you want to play classical music you'll be good at it by the time you're 30-35 or older
if you wanna play popular music you'll be good enough by the time you're 20

Fpbp

That's exactly the problem I've always had, yeah. Everyone just tells me I should make bleep bloop music with a DAW instead.

Go to student concerts, discuss music with people, make friends.

I could have a shot at a song on guitar if you are interested, although I might need to simplify the chords or change the key as piano chords don’t always translate well.

Never too late.
I started guitar at 27 and have been having tons of fun steadily getting better over the past years.
It's a lifelong journey, 19 is nothing.
