I feel like EVOL has the most immediate appeal but Daydream is their greatest achievement. s/t and BMR are the pinnacles of the more purely experimental side of SY while people who say Sister or Confusion are just dumbass contrarians

The only thing that matters is that Sonic Youth (and later Thurston during the divorce shenenigans) did nothing wrong, Nardwuar is a little bitch troll that got trolled, and the 2002 rematch was also great

I'm convinced that you didn't even listen to Sister. Almost every single song has a noise breakdown even better than the one in Silver Rocket. It's a WAY more abstract record than DN and every noise section is unique. Plus I love the production on Sister way more, it's got this really warm sound to it that no other album has ever replicated for me

ok, so I liked the first couple of tracks off EVOL, but then it got a bit too wannabe poetic artsy atmospheric black bangs wearing snoozefest for me

I feel the same. it sounds lifeless and plain compared to everything else in the album. I didn't listen to daydream nation for the longest time because I thought the whole thing was going to be like teenage riot and people regard it as the best sonic youth song so I just skipped it.

cause it's a song about J Mascis and I love J Mascis

drumming is god tier for one thing. steve shelley is probably the most underrated element of sonic youth.

I probably overate Teenage Riot because it is the first song of a great and long record, so it gets anticipation points. If Kim Gordon's intro part was separated as a track from the rest of the song I suspect consensus on Teenage Riot might be very different.
