Why is it that in grunge, one of the most overrated and overblown genres ever, that Alice in Chains is the one shining example of a band that transcended the gente? What was it about the band that made them stand out?

I think it's because they had that Trump supporter vibe about them, even back in the 90s before he came to the political arena.

What the fuck are you talking about

>best vocal harmonies and 2 dominant singers
>darkest subject matter
>saddest emotion because Layne was truly depressing
>acoustic Esp are very different but still really good in standout way
>Dirt flows better than any grunge album outside Nirvana
>Layne didn't kill himself like a bitch
>muh drugs

I mean they were before their time, they had the sense about them to not bend their knees to the coming SJW threat and instead write politically incorrect songs about suicide and the like, making them alligned with the force Trump represents today. They were coming for the PC culture before it even began, they were so forward thinking.

Layne Staley is the most unique singer in grunge and most talented unless you're a cornell guy. Then add his harmony with Jerry Cantrell and they're the beach boys of grunge.

Okay, makes a little more sense now

Top Tier
>SoundGarden

Good Tier
>Nirvana
>Mudhoney

Neutral Tier
>Alice in Chains

please fucking kill me Tier
>Pearl Jam

Suicide by gunshot is way more hardcore than an accidental overdose

Cause theyre a metal band

I wouldn't have placed Mudhoney that high. They just seemed like a bunch of kids trying to cache in on the trend

>Nirvana
>Mad Season
>Love Battery
>Mudhoney
>Green River
>Screaming Trees
>maybe to some extent Soundgarden
Now these are bands that have a similar sound and vibe to it. This is a musical genre.

Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam were just trying to make cock rock cool again.

and by the way
>grunge
>overrated
Besides the big 4, no one gives a shit about the genre.

they started the trend dumb nigger

So many cool grunge threads tonight. Check out meat puppets.

Fucking kill yourself

>Nirvana
>similar sound to Mad Season
How fucking stupid are you? And AiC went far darker than Nirvana ever did

>really fucking strong rhythm section
>Cantrell: the riff machine, a middle ground between Iommi and Blackmore (his solos were lacking a lot of the time for me tho)
>Staley being one of the best vocalists that rock music has ever seen
>harmonies
>dark subject matter shown in a non pretentious and bullshit way

Them and Soundgarden were the only bands in the whole movement that really stood out musically for me

Layne literally killed himself for last three years when he lost any interest in music and didn't anything to clean up

Obligatory reminder that Local H exists and is consistently good to this day.

In terms of "mainstream grunge" Soundgarden are pretty good too. PJ is kinda generic rock but easy on the ears. Check out other lesser-known groups like Tad, Gruntruck, Skin Yard, Malfunkshun, Screaming Trees though, they're pretty solid

>They were coming for the PC culture before it even began
>before it even began
>in the 90s
top retardation, not to mention those subjects have been covered by musicians for hundreds of years now

It's because they spent their career ripping off Electric Funeral

I am pretty sure Cantrell heavily criticized religious right and creationism on one AIC album
They also have black singer noe who supports Bernie and BLM
But their work is largely apolitical

Alice In Chains sucks and was the most soulless ""grunge"" band, they just dressed up in flannels and played metal

>implying "grunge" wasn't an invention of record labels to unite bands that had little in common

>the most soulless ""grunge"" band
not even close

In what world do you live lol it can't be further from truth

pretty much all the grunge guys hated or at least rejected the label after Facelift and Nevermind got big

This is a dumb fucking post if I ever saw one.
Not only is grunge clearly not a genre, but in what way did AiC transcend anything? They made good rock music, but to this day they live in the shadow of Nirvana.

>they live in the shadow of Nirvana
to be fair all of them do but that's not necessarily down to the quality of the music

correct opinion AIC were probably among the more interesting alt-rockers but haven't had the same staying power as Nirvana or even Pearl Jam

That was my point, yes.
Unless OP is trying to argue that AiC were objectively the best grunge band? Because objectivity in music is pretty much immeasurable.

Nirvana is complete and utter dogshit though. Their "staying power" is based on the 27 club meme because sure as shit that no one is actually listening to Nirvana and enjoying it

Not disagreeing there, Nirvana were by far the worst of the big grunge bands. They are still by far the best known even today though

Which band had the worst influence on music?

Nirvana spawned Bush and Nickelback
Pearl Jam spawned Creed
Alice in Chains spawned Breaking Benjamin and Godsmack
Not sure who Soundgarden directly spawned

Alice In Chains also inspired Queens Of The Stone Age's early work.

Grunge is underappreciated due to its mainstream splash. It was a trend, so people stopped listening, and instead remembered. The vast majority of grunge is spectacular, and you're too simple to think critically regarding music.

Alice in Chains influenced the only good post-grunge band Chevelle
I am pretty sure they inspired Tool as well

>the only good post-grunge band Chevelle
my man

>I am pretty sure they inspired Tool as well
I don't hear it. Which is good cuz I like AiC and dislike Tool

No you're not supposed to say that

Tad were metalfags riding the grunge wave right to the bank

Hate to tell you user, but your wrong

It's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it.

>Nirvana spawned Bush and Nickelback
>Noise-drenched post-punk created by-the-numbers buttrock
How does that work?

They watered down their sound

There's definite crossover between Undertow and AiC's s/t. I'm pretty sure Undertow came out first though, so any inspiration seems unlikely.

So "How You Remind Me?" is watered-down "Scentless Apprentice"?

fun fact: both In Utero and Chevelle's debut were produced by Steve Albini

And Bush's Razorblade Suitcase

Nah, the first CD I ever bought with my own money was Nevermind and I even borrowed that With The Lights Out set from my friend so I could rip it all into my computer. I know for a fact that Nirvana's music was dogshit so anyone that actually cares about it has dogshit taste

Also
>*you're

"Scentless Apprentice" was a watered down Dinosaur Jr. song so sure

Oh, that's right I forgot, your opinion determines good taste

My bad

No problem, just try and remember next time

>Nirvana
>Noise-drenched post-punk
LMAO
