Korn had funk and goth influence, Deftones had their shoe gays bullshit, Slipknot was the closest it ever got to "extreme metal", Mudvayne was the closest to prog and math rock, SOAD had some Eastern European folk gimmick but really just appealed to Invader Zim watching LOLRANDUM dorks, Papa Roach and Linkin Park were for the emos, Disturbed was for the butt rockers, Staind was for the redneck buttrockers, bands like Static X and Powerman were for the pseudo industrial/raver fucks

Nu metal had all kinds of flavors, and every band had a gimmick post Korn just like wrestlers did, it was all "take the Korn formula and add a gimmick", Deftones gimmick was not better than anyone elses, fuck you

They always had that dreamy shitty sound incorporated into their music and Chino always mimicked those kind of stretched out low effort vocals. The influence was always there, and if you met Chino he'd tell you the same, even if they used to be heavier/Korn oriented.

Deftones is really the only nu-Metal band to stay almost relevant, evolve from their stereotypical sound, and still have a lot of fans. Each genre of music has one, like 311 to rap rock, Aerosmith to hair metal, and Alice In Chains to grunge.

I should specify: it's the first album where they largely begin their move from nu metal that you see on Around the Fur and Adrenaline.
