The combination of textures is pretty interesting to hear, as well as with some artists (Kazumoto Endo for instance) who juxtapose the noise with lighter music to make for an interesting atmosphere.
I think the biggest misconception with noise is that it all sounds like Merzbow's lethargic harsh noise projects, and not the industrial influenced, more interesting takes on the genre - Merzbow himself has made more interesting things than noise for the sake of noise.
It's just another genre and I think people often get a bad interpretation of it.
it makes my brain feel fuzzy
genuinely i feel like noise can be the heaviest genre. Listening to it is pure catharsis. The feelings I get from it are really relaxing for some reason
I'm an artist and I find that harsh noise and other similar genres of music create certain creative states that affect my work (very large abstract paintings and drawings) in a particular way. I guess you could say I use it as a work aid?
yes
It makes me feel like a big man
this is what my friend has described it as, almost the exact same wording.
maybe i am your friend
Aaron Dilloway and Dust Hag are pretty cool I guess, but my favorite "noise" is warp effects and looping sections at the beginning or end of songs... mainly organic sounds that happen when starting or stopping a tape machine or something, or like uncontrollable feedback.
bc i cant get into ambient
Like scratching a mosquito bite
I like extreme music, I think harsh noise is the most extreme genre. This is now a harsh noise thread
youtube.com
because it helps me make art and disassociate
its comforting
because I am suicidally depressed and its the only music that can comfort me
Well, I'm sort of new to the genre, but I can at least explain why I like a certain record, G.R. by Deathpile, which is an album that takes place from the point of view of the green river killer.
For me, the premise of the record fits perfectly with the genre, and the harsh textures add to the lyrics. Not to say in another genre, like black/death metal, the lyrics wouldn't be interesting, but I feel like they benefit from the very unforgiving sounds backing the vocals. Also it's a lot more attention grabbing than most genres where you can listen a bit more casually to.
I hope my ramble at least makes some sense, also, if y'all have any recommendations for albums like that, I'd appreciate it.
To me harsh noise/pe are the genres of ultimate revulsion and disgust. They help me process evils/horrors in the world that I can't empathize with on any level in a way more formal genres can't for precisely that reason.
shilling some noise i made in case any noiseheads want to give it a listen
Needs more volume and feels a bit flat. Need some thick guttural noises to lay on top of it all.
thanks for the feedback, i intend to make my future stuff more dense
ugly music lets me indulge in my most fucked up thoughts without consequence
also it's just damn good music that really hits hard and cuts through
Same, but I also have schizophrenia and extreme sounds help me cope. Anybody into noise should definitely get into musique concrete as well
A friend of mine described listening to noise as being like taking a steel sponge to your brain. It's cleansing. This is why I like noise.
Depends on the noise. Some can be a comforting all-enveloping atmosphere. Other noise can be loud and get the adreneline going, and almost be like listening to metal, but without the riffs. Still other noise can feel like someone's drilling a hole through your skull for an hour. That can be enjoyable in a sort of masochistic way as well.
I find it's soothing
Predictable music makes me uneasy
It's just stimulating textures, not much more to it really. It's just more abstract and more intangible than regular music. Regular music is like staring at a colorful flower, noise music is like staring at a colorful nebula.
Does 'Sister Ray' by Velvet Underground count as noise? What about 'Spec Bebop' by Yo La Tengo?
Been trying to find more tracks like these but I'm not at all familiar with this sort of music so I don't even know what to google/search for.
Check out '77 Live by Les Rallizes dénudés
Thank you user, I am giving it a listen now.
I enjoy the dreamy surfrock-echo feel of the beginning so far.
anyone know some easy to get into noise?
the only stuff ive heard and enjoyed was merbow's work with boris.
Kazumoto Endo aka Killer Bug is pretty accessible from what some non noise listeners have told me
Just finished it, not bad.
Any other recommendations?
Not him, but check out Stereolab's earlier stuff as well as The Goslings, Lightning Bolt, Fushitsusha, Hanatarash, Kazumoto Endo, Shizuka, Converter, Boredoms, Godheadsilo, The Fall, early Sonic Youth, The Birthday Party, Public Image Ltd, and Chrome. They're not all exactly the same concept, but they are pretty good noisier jam-rock music or beat-driven noise music.
Thanks for a big list, I will chew through this over the next few weeks
I don’t exactly know. I don’t enjoy it in the same way I do other genres. I really love industrial and I consider (based on how I interpret/hear the genre) it to be like industrial taken to a larger extreme. I think that may be why I enjoy it.
