when people talk about "designing" a synth, what do they mean? Like tweaking the settings of a synth plug-in?
Daniel Cox
Designing a synth or a sound? Designing a synth probably happens within software for most people. Only a small fraction of dedicated users design their own ones.
I don't really know I guess. Someone in the other thread suggested that someone "Split your learning between theory and sound design on a synth" and I was wondering what they were talking about
Thomas Smith
they were shitposting
Jaxson Johnson
Choose a synth and try to stick with it in the beginning. There's many schools of synthesis around. The new york school videos will teach you sibtractive synthesis which is the easiest one to learn. The worst thing about DAWs and digital stuff is the fact that there are so many possibilities. Often times this actually hinders creativity. Look at some of the iconic old dancefloor hits. Some of these guys snatched what they could, sometimes nothing more than a groovebox and a monosynth but they made it work because they learned their way around their equipment and because they had a focused workflow. Keep it simple whenever possible and trust your ears above all else even with GUIs and 10 point EQs around. I meant creating a sound you hear in your head from scratch on a synthesizer. Unless you want to be stuck with presets, you should know the basic components of a synth and how they shape the sound.

What color should I paint the walls in my music production room (3m x 3m)? White or a really really dark gray? The floor is a natural wood with a somewhat orange tone but I'll get a rug to cover most of it. I haven't produced anything, but I'm going to go against everything you said just to spite that approach that makes me feel like you're creating an army of ableton-using clones. Honestly though, your advice is great and you're a very kind person to share those tips in such detail.

I'm a granular noob man. If you're fine with whatever you're using now, then ignore it lol. I just use it because it's simple and I've always used it I guess.

Like the other guy suggested, if you want to learn synthesis, the NY School of Synthesis videos are good for someone who's never touched a synth. Syntorial is great too, but some exercises can be a bit difficult for a beginner, so I'd say develop an ear for sounds and synthesis first.
Get Xfer Serum and don't waste time learning any other synth, at least at first. This alone is extremely powerful and the closest thing to an "industry standard" software synth.
man granular is my shit absynth isnt my main bitch but like that freaky sideho that indulges in the more fucked up stuff u kno???
in truth i'm put off mostly by initial "feel" fm and the window function seem useful but beyond the overlap absynth just offers more... although idk, the sounds i was getting initially were reminding me more of Amnesia Scanner pretty quickly
dragging samples in though is the shit i fucking hate that about absynth. i'm still going to end up using it a lot (:
Colton Green
When you call something "the shit", that means it's great/awesome/amazing. If something is just "shit", then it's terrible/awful/trash. I feel like spanish has a similar idiom. What language is your first? Surely, you're not one of those Italian anons?
should i add anything more to this beat? i'm trying to keep in it minimal but it might be too sparse or just enough?
Chase Robinson
original guy who asked the question here, thanks to both of you for the info, really set me off on the right path here. Last part I'm still a little unsure on though, how should I go about getting my music theory down? In particular, how in depth do I need to get, what topics are fundamental etc. Right now I'm building up to chord progressions but idk what else I should have on my need-to-know list
Eli Bennett
his whole subject complement is 'the shit i fucking hate about that synth' though
Justin Wood
guys he's expanding outside this general, this is from sadowick's new video
english, very basic spanish- yeah that last line was strung together kind of weird.
yes, THE shit is calling something great. you can't drag samples into absynth but you can with granulator, which is much quicker, especially when resampling a lot within a project.
Chase Bennett
I actually installed Absynth because of what you were saying about it, but only opened it once, my eyes started to hurt, and I closed it right away. I'll play around with it once I get f.lux or something.
IDK, I alwaystend to use stock Ableton stuff because it's much easier to map to macros and other M4L devices, which is a big part of my workflow, so I guess I'm subconsciously more drawn to that, merely because of the slightly more impractical "configure" thing you have to do with third party plugins.
>man granular is my shit absynth isnt my main bitch but like that freaky sideho that indulges in the more fucked up stuff u kno??? lmao
"the shit" is slang for "the best". Skrillex even has a song where the rapper goes "yeah, I'm the shit, I should have Febreze on me" lmao.
Lucas Cook
kek nvm i read the words in the wrong order (its late)
f. lux can cause audio issues occasionally- just in case you ever notice your daw overloading try disabling it. (or at least that was the case a year or so ago, idk if it's been remedied in any updates, i haven't personally had any problems recently)
>I alwaystend to use stock Ableton stuff because it's much easier to map to macros and other M4L devices, which is a big part of my workflow
same man, everything just flows more quickly. absynth's ui is definitely a bitch to get used to though, I had it for over a year before I actually tried to use it.

How to make a synth or sample sound like an electric guitar strumming? Is this even possible
Caleb Richardson
Much better! The timing is a bit wonky but it might be more an issue with your bassline trying to do too much instead of fitting into the grooves of the organ you laid out. Try starting with just an offbeat pattern to match the organ melody and then see what kind of grooves work from there. Simplicity will help your individual elements stand out and the musicality will come from the grooves you play and their timing. Try putting some light overdrive on your organ, might be a tone you like. Spacey stoner stuff feels good with bass guitar, maybe you can get a cool pluck bassline that? Samples would be fine or start with a bass guitar pluck preset on a synth you like. Me personally I love organs and distorted guitars playing together for the vibe factor. Tremolo will help you space stuff out but then again I love that rotating cabinet organ sound from older American rock so I'm biased lolol.

Still looking for someone who knows the Justice sampled sound selection and different mindset to the table to help in such a short time. Some random snares or tails of sound. House is the synth and get rid of that "float on" voice sample. I'm sure music and more compressor, and it gives you the DMX sound within the French touch sound and might have something on Cross.
Find a better. It's not hard to do if you know now not to add bitcrush but kept erosion, and added lowmend to the same instruments and to just not use too many elements at once, but it's good practice and I need different instrumentation and attention to creating the simultaneously filter section.
The only thing that sound that's why I need a dress-up gimmick. Genesis uses the wubs and found and might have heard it but here's my musician. The trick I've found that earlier. Thanks. Another thing I like. I think there's not the sound I'm looking for obscure synth VST with a unique tone or something sounded like (in my youth I liked glam rock image. I'm really complex music. I just don't know why they went by the group in EDM since Daft Punk have to dress like that album to make a good critically-recognized album. Or we can talk. I feel like Daft Punk, for example.

So, I'd love some feedback (particularly about mixing)….I honestly have NO idea how to mix and I'm just going by ear
>Main questions I have
1) How can I make the instruments I used sound more clear and separated from each other?
2) Does the outro match the rest of the song at all?
3) Any info/links about how loud the instruments/drums/crashes/song should be?
4) Any tips on mixing or making this a better song in general?
I really don't know that much about this, and any feedback at all is appreciated...I'm using FL Studio btw
Alexander Cooper
Compression/limiting is suffocating the whole thing, take that off everything to start with (I believe FL has a master limiter also and that might be choking the mix too if it's enabled) and get your instruments balanced first, and if you're going to use compression as a stylistic thing you can add it afterwards once you have your balance right.

instaud.io/3Ynk Added a sweeping resonant filter on that bass part so it stands out more. And some overdrive on the organ. Threw in a bit of guitar for funsies as well.
>Compression/limiting It was a really bad attempt to sperate the sounds and instruments (I'm using the free plugins from FL Studio) Sytrus and sim synth is where I chose them....There weren't many sounds to choose from that I liked, and the ones that I chose were kind of fighting each other for the same frequencies...so I side chained a lot of the sounds together in an attempt to make them stand out from each other.….but I think that the instruments themselves might not work that well together either
Can you maybe suggest/describe what type of instruments would work with my melody?...Because I really like the melody and kinda want to keep it

I'm having difficulties coming up with anything g to make this sound good yet different from Genesis. I'm hesitant to add anything because I don't want it to sound like a ripoff, yet it needs to sound powerful. I'm losing steam in music and have been sleeping a lot more the past couple of days.
isn't it more likely that the magic of a commerical pop song doesn't come from the synth, but from the talent of the Swedish dudes writing the music?
Cooper Adams
Make high shelf at the end of bass chain and bring that down a bit maybe starting at 8k like 2db. It'll stop some of frequency clashing between the bass and organ initially. You can bring it back on at the part starting around 1:04, which I think sounds much more interesting and cooler now. So I'll spark up to that. The harpichord sounding plucks are a touch too loud, maybe cutting away some of their high end will do the trick as opposed to an overall gain cut. The sound itself and melody is great and fits the mood, maybe with a bit less high end you can match it with the rest of instruments in terms of tone. You can always add high end back in on the mixbus as an overall air or sheen effect, it will help glue the song as a whole and keep the tone between all the instruments consistent. Its considered less than ideal to have sounds suddenly jump out, at least from the perspective of slower groove based stuff where you want to keep the listener in the perpetual slow head nod state lol. Love the guitar as a whole and the overdrive is good too, try to bring it down for the initial part of the song and drive it harder during your chorus section. Little automation like that can go a long way so experiment. If you aren't already you can mess around with the panning. Think of your mix from the perspective of a band standing in front of you playing it, not every instrument is going to be coming from the middle.
Adrian Green
Do you need all of those inputs? If you need a thunderbolt interface at a lower price point but within a similar range I HIGHLY recommend the focusrite clarett series.
Jordan Powell
Yeah, I'm helping someone set up their home studio and he already got two of those interfaces. Couldn't get the interfaces to connect to his laptop though. Thinking it might be because the thunderbolt cable is some bootleg one we got off amazon. Ever had a problem with thunderbolt cables that weren't official apple ones?
Owen Reyes
when you're just starting, how do you deal with the mental pressure of knowing that you suck and that you will suck for a very long, long time? like how do you focus on the fun of the process rather than the results?
Owen Nguyen
Melody is by far the most important element to music
It is what separates remarkable compositions from rubbish. I challenge anyone ITT to post a remarkable tune - not remarkable to you, but remarkable in an artistic, sociohistorical way - that doesn't rely on melodic figures
Hell, even within genres far disconnected from traditional songwriting like techno, where you would expect rhythm or sound design to play a bigger role, the really remarkable tunes are the ones with extraordinary melodic content
We know very little about the workflow and theoretical foundation of Max Martin (the most succesful songwriter alive) and his work, but one thing we do know is that, whenever going into production, the first thing he does is to spend anywhere from a week to a couple months brainstorming melodies - not arrangement or even lyrics, no, I'm talking 8 bars of solid musical ideas.
From now on I'm gonna be spending less and less time in front of a DAW. What does it matter whether you're capable of producing a pristine, groovy mix if you can't come up with good musical ideas in the first place?
Parker Lee
so how are you going to come up with melody? on a keyboard?
Andrew Turner
Are you not able to imagine a melody?
Daniel Butler
no of course I can...I was just wondering if you had a primary instrument that you used to write
Xavier Lee
>like how do you focus on the fun of the process rather than the results? you just spelled out the endgame man- it's all about becoming process oriented
i've been doing this.... 5~ years? hundreds of songs, most of them totally suck, i finish a song every few days at least usually. no song matters (okay i stop everything and spend a week when i know a song is good and want to take it further but that's different), when i start writing that day it's all about that days song and just having fun, following whatever has me curious- just starting out, that translates to "okay what am i learning right now? okay i'm going to have fun learning x and playing with it and my failures don't matter because i'm always getting better and i just want to focus on today." celebrate every little victory, they'll add up. I hope i don't sound all annoying but yeah that's about it
lol

When I was first starting I knew that it would be years before I could compare myself to people who do it professionally (and I wasn't even sure that this would ever happen) so seeing myself develop skills was a constant mind blowing experience. I remember being so happy about being able to make a filter sweep in Massive and I showed it to my brother like it was some impressive achievement lmao.
Comparing the work of a beginner to that of someone who not only has done it for several years, but is also an outlier among those who did (by virtue of the fact that they're famous and successful enough for me to know them), doesn't make any sense. You're supposed to suck as a beginner. You shouldn't feel bad about it.

I think you add some reverb/chorus to the sub bass, no? It's kinda bleeding into the mix. Try only applying it only to mid-bass frequency. The reverb also makes the percussion to not standing out, so I suggest to tighten up the tail a little bit or do some low-pass to it.
Logan Scott
Put them together to get a feel for more songs for the album. I'm going to elongate these two, but at the moment nothing I try is sounding good. I really need somebody to do the same thing I do and bring something to the table. I keep second-guessing everything I do. I think the concept is basically an ayy lmao version of Daft Punk.
a song can still be 'good' if it isn't good, if there is some sort of confidence behind it, if it's done in a way which conveys something.. 'quality' takes up a different meaning.

I kind of understand what you're getting at, but I'm having a hard time putting it into words too. I believe the best music sounds analog and warm and I think that's part of your revelation, as most music coming out these days is cold and digital, but also that the best producers automate and comb over every part of their track to prevent it from becoming stale, while giving the listener something new to experience on every new listen because the track has so much depth. Am I close? Explain to me. You might be discovering the secret to success.
William Perez
Nah, you realize pretty quick if you listen to pop that a song can be good (read enjoyable, popular, and memorable) whilst being absolutely retarded and dead simply made (see youtube.com/watch?v=RumFvtkW724). You guys massively overcomplicate the process of music making because most of you approach it from the mindset of an artist or technician instead of an entertainer.

True, but compared to any other skilled profession it's not much at all. If it were easier it really wouldn't be worth it, as there would be so much good music made by every 12yo that the difference between someone who does it as a career and someone who does it for fun wouldn't make it worth doing as a career at all. It's the fact that it's hard that makes it worthwile, and when you become good at it I promise it's gonna feel so good (I'm not pro-level yet, but seeing how much I know compared to when I first started, and how much I improved since then, already feels very good and makes me want to work more).

Ok, so I have a beat tape produced. There's this rapper that goes to the same gym, and he's pretty popular here( I live in a 2nd world country). Should I just go up to him and ask him to check out my beat tape or will I get btfo or ignored?
Jonathan Foster
Yes but not during his workout. Possibly when you see him idling before or after it. If you act annoyingly or interrupt him in any way (even just by having him take his headphones out) he'll probably think you're a cunt and won't listen to your shit.
If he goes there with someone else, you could try befriending them over some shared experience or interest (maybe comment on his tshirt if it's about a band you can research on your phone or something like that) to get in their circle, and with time you'll get to know the rapper. Don't even tell them you're a producer until you're already their friend for some time, and make it seem like producing is no big deal to you ("yeah I kinda produce once in a while, I have a couple beats on my phone if you want to hear"). This is a long-term strategy though. If you want some quick shallow connection just cold approach him and give him your elevator pitch, but he probably won't care and you'll be one in a million other kids who've sone the same within the past few months.

Aaron Robinson
Record it live yourself and don't quantize. If you can't play it up to speed slow down the tempo while recording. 16th note bass lines sound like a terrible idea though... do you have any examples of this?
Lucas Foster
I must have fucked up my theory, maybe I don't mean 16th notes, I just mean faster notes like on a typical post punk song
Tyler Barnes
parameters mapped to note and velocity
Parker Bell
No, you're probably right depending how they define the tempo. I realized you're talking about repeated notes the moment I clicked post. At first I was imagining some muddy bebopish bassline that goes all over the place. My advice still stands though since playing manually will naturally vary the velocities of the notes to make it sound more natural.
Ryan Garcia
explain to me like I'm an idiot please: do you just mean varying the velocity?
Noah Hall
oh yeah, I'm talking about the same note 8 times, followed by another note 8 times, etc. thanks for the advice!
Josiah Thomas
guys I've been using FL studio for 3 years now and I've had the horrific realization that I am slowly but surely getting shittier at making music. I fucking hate FL, everything about it encourages all of my worst tendencies and I feel like if I keep using it I will never improve. I've tried to switch to Ableton multiple times but each attempt never lasts more than a week. I honestly think it's harder to switch from FL. I've looked for a tutorial series tailored for people that are already familiar with FL, but it doesn't look like such a thing exists. to Ableton than just learning it from scratch. Does anyone have experience making this switch? Any resources that helped?
yes but depending on the synth you can usually map stuff like filters of fxs to the velocity and sometimes the actual notes, this way playing different notes with different velocities will give you a slightly different sound and that helps a lot I'm pretty sure it's quite common for kontakt libraries if you take a look under the hood
Charles Roberts
>What style of music do you want to make? Are you able to play any instruments? Need more info

I struggle with genre labels but the stuff I make these days probably tends to lean towards ambient IDM, downtempo, maybe a little bit of dream-pop and l*fi h*p-h*p. (Think BoC, Kenny Segal, Tobacco. Lots of bitcrushed synths)
Owen Bailey
One thing that I forgot to mention that's more on the tech support side of things: Ableton doesn't recognize the vast majority of my VSTs. I've heard this is because Ableton won't detect plugins missing recent updates as an anti-piracy measure. If it is an anti-piracy thing, it's working. All of my software is pirated. Not proud of it, but right now for me it's either pirated software or no software. I imagine that this just means I'll have to spend a day reinstalling plugins to get them to show up, but it's kind of a daunting task seeing as I've amassed a gargantuan collection of VSTs over the years. >Are you able to play any instruments? Play drums but recently had to sell my kit. Never did end up recording live drums in any tracks but I'd like to in the future.

What do you make? I get the sense that there's a lot of "grass is always greener" with this stuff. Maybe it's more about the switch itself than what exactly you're switching to. Staring at the same UI for hours at a time every day for years is inevitably going to whittle down your creativity and enthusiasm, and more often than not that means the quality of your work is gonna suffer tremendously. At least that's what I think is happening with me.

it's a matter of perspective- anybody can just as easily say "working with the same UI for hours at a time every day for years is inevitably going to make you extremely efficient and work quickly since you know the daw inside and out"
Change can be refreshing though- I know it sounds dumb but i make a point of changing Ableton skins frequently for this reason.... changing my default set and focusing on different synths help as well.

>all lies user, i know you're full of shit I made low-mid six figures from music this year and it's a slow one because I just had my second kid. What do you have to your name? Your anime DVDs?
Zachary Anderson
>and i regret clicking despite knowing it was going to be you FUCK why? that's harsh
i made a question and you bashed me right away without even a comment and i'm the one trying to bring others down? oh fuck you and your retarded gaslight.

I wish there was an easy way to swap color themes. The muted grey tones with hints of dirty blue in everything annoys me after using FL since v7.
Connor Ortiz
what makes my mixdown sound like this? It sounds bad right?
everything is lows bro is all that granular shit sampled or what the fuck? idg how you're asking this but are making sound like that lmao
thxx though i was wondering what to work on and i wanna make some like that now :p

I dig your voice but you are off key with the song you picked. In general your voice reminds me a lot of Danzig's after I heard him live. Maybe try some more songs within the punk style, tonally it can cover your natural pitch shifts and avoid having to do any post. production tuning on your vocals. Just something to consider though! Your guitar is awesome and I know you'd be able to play the simpler riffs with a ton of expression. Please don't get discouraged since I would love to help you out further, my experience is mostly shadowing my boss while he does recording but I'm picking up knowledge slowly and could at least help you out with mixing.
Nathan Flores
Nope, 64 bit. It's really baffling.
Sebastian Smith
nice digits >everything is lows bro yeh but it's weird the lossless file sounds not that bad but when I upload it onto anywhere the lows are brought forth so much >is all that granular shit sampled the main sound is serum and a butt ton of fx but most of the layers like at 0:50 for example are sampled
Christopher Rogers
>I made low-mid six figures from music this year I've always wanted to live in Japan except I would hate standing out because I'm white.
Yeah, that's probably closer to the sort of critiques I hear. She never did it growing up, and we usually get pretty drunk before she'll even get behind the microphone. Really fun nights, though.
Thanks for checking them out.

the notes are in key

Then post your recorded track with the pitch analysis so we can laugh at you again, fuckwit. OR PREFERABLY just stop being dishonest with yourself.

im not being dishonest retard i may go flat or sharp sometimes but i'm not out of the key's scale

Its fun. But the best part is that she understands when I spend a couple hours alone playing music. Go find a cute girlfriend and make songs with her.
Also, fuck it. One more 'cause people never hear these tracks anyway.
IT'S ALWAYS OUT OF KEY stop posting YouTube videos like you're proving something faggot
Gabriel Anderson
well waaaay back i used to make boom bap beats on reason 4. then i switched to ableton and my shit sounded trash for the longest time. eventually i started making electronic stuff, mostly house stuff, which ableton deffo lent itself to. now im making trap beats so really FL is perfect for me, grass is greener effect aside
Samuel Gray
>omg i feel intimidated by an youtube link, i must insult him
Justin Parker

I can't think of why it would do this. Try downloading it back from instaudio and see if it plays back correctly on whatever you use.
Aiden Walker

Ryan Rogers
it's not about it being youtube, it's that you think you're actually proving something by showing another out of key example that nobody asked for
John Hill
nice baiting, dont quote me anymore
Adam Hill
Use Digital Performer. I'm going to meme this now.
Michael Carter
I felt that some of the notes you hit were off key, nothing too major since you clearly understand how to sing around what you're playing. My advise is to simplify your playing and singing to see where your pitch starts to drift. Arguably no one cares about singer/songwriter covers either, maybe after trying some of the punk stuff you'll get other ideas about where to go. Personally I believe punk will make a comeback in a different form but the guitar and vocals will remain the same. Please ignore the one negative asshole who isn't offering any real feedback. I'll take a listen to your vid later though, about to leave the house.
Brayden Allen
yes
Carson Myers
Remember when everyone in prod wanted to sound like moody good?
instaud.io/3YKi Added some extra voices doubling the lead to make it more interesting and spacey. And some "greeble" in the first half, which I'm not really sure about.
Oh no we did lots of that, oh yes we did, and then we stopped.
Two years of this now and counting, 24 months of feedback being met with further questions written like statements, denying any criticism because of that one time (maybe twice) on youtube where he hit that one note.
You're just at the start of this ride if you choose to carry on, enjoy.
What the fuck the most I've peaked on Ubuntu is about 3gb.
Ayden Harris
>Oh no we did lots of that, oh yes we did, and then we stopped.
i am the "one negative asshole" being referred to i tried helping him for so fucking long when i was new to /prod/ (so was he) and it was like pulling teeth with that dude, he just outright makes excuses or pretends no problem exist, it's fucking ridiculous. legit had to keep in mind not to say anything negative just so he wouldn't immediately go into defense mode......... he never acted on any advice, it got more annoying, realized i was being an idiot for bothering at all, haven't heard him improve at all in two years aside from a slight quality shift when he stopped recording with a direct in line mic, that's literally it.
Hudson Smith
So you're the poopy head with a soft spot user? I know you.
Tyler Adams
i don't recall being called that, but it's possible
Xavier Adams
Nah, I like it, bass sounds good. Can't understand a word of the vocal but I think that's the point?
Benjamin Richardson
>organ accompanied by farts what the fuck's a greeble? Pretty neat, drums are hella weak tho, sounds like the 70s with higher fidelity.
Evan Howard
I have too much of a soft spot and want to help as much as I can whenever I hear something with potential. You bring up a good argument and I’ll consider turning down my compulsion to help from now on.
Hudson Martinez
took the plunge, bought a MPK Mini Play. Don't know anything about music theory or production, but having fun just playing around with it on the couch. Will hook it up to the computer tomorrow when I get a longer USB cable
Angel Long
fun is all that matters
Evan Nelson
Ok, but still it's hard to find it for that price, this is the only option?
Xavier Gray
>this is the only option? Did you even read the thread? The answer is below your original question.
I can't buy on reverb or what? Just for a few month in the USA, I'm in the NYC right now. That's why I'm asking, don't have enough time to search everywhere. Also I'd like to check some flea markets if there are any.
William Walker
It's not the only course of course, just one of the most genre appropriate options. You'd be better off with a DX11 or SY77 if you want an FM sound, but they're more like 300, and old analogs are usually even more expensive. Personally I'd just save for something in the 3-5 hundred range.
Charles Gray
>I can't buy on reverb or what? I'm just saying that because the prices will be higher on Reverb. I guess you could think of it as a convenience fee.
Hunter Wright
Oh boy, you're in luck there's 130 possibilities depending on your transportation situation.
instaud.io/3YNS Working on the intro for a new psy track. Any thoughts?
Brayden Taylor
no its not really you should just pirate it nobody before relied on syntorial to make music
Carson White
Can anyone give me a reverb analysis on this track? Is it one set reverb throughout or are they adjusting it particularly at 1:36? Are they using one reverb and switching outmdrums throughout the track with different drum volumes, and perhaps that's why I'm hearing them "adjust" the reverb?
And lastly, at 1:36 you can hear the reverb shaking as of it's reverberating off something nearby after the low volume snare hits. How to do this? Are they using quieter or lower velocity drum hits and maybe that's why the reverb responds more quietly? These guys are seriously meticulous as hell
Colton Ortiz

I think I'd better get back to sampling music and get every one hit, chord stab, whatever I can find
Zachary Sanchez
Sorry for multiple posts. Connection error was holding me up

STOP
You’ve been caught using a stale justicefag text generator meme
I’ve contacted cyber police

Alright, I added you. I do think what they've done is sampled virtually every single thing from albums that are isolated. Every drum hit, every bass note, some vocals like the Queen We are the Champions Ahh on Genesis, Slipknot voice, whatever they could find that was isolated. I'm not sure about the reverb though. They seem to almost not use it at all, or maybe very slightly. Every now and then they increase the reverb and use it as an effect. But they have such a consistent reverb throughout the album. So much so it almost sounds like there is no reverb I just can't tell how they're automating it. Is everything sent to a return channel and then automated from there? That can't be it, because sometimes different elements have different reverb amounts, or maybe not and some elements just have higher volume, giving the illusion of different reverb amounts. Reverb confuses me so fucking much
Xavier Reed
Nice, good and dark sounding. Good luck not getting mugged in Brooklyn.
Dylan Gomez
drum hit to a channel with reverb with a long tail record it cut the actual drum hit automate the volume of the remainder tail
Adam Richardson
And what particularly will that reproduce?
Henry Evans
here's my take instaud.io/3YOW i like it, get more sfx or a full-on bassline
The empty reverb ooompf you hear 1:36 into Justice's Newjack
Robert Roberts
The thing about that sound is that it sounds like what happens to a snare drum when something makes it vibrate. It gradually swells in volume after every hit of the snare. I wonder if they sampled that as well?...
Lucas Perez
I don't know how they did it, but I've done something similar before with the method described here >It gradually swells in volume That's exactly why I told you to automate the volume, user
Angel Nelson
It justmdoean't have the same sound. If you listen closely, it has a snare rumble, or what's called snare buzz. The snare buzz vst doesn't sound like it, but I know a sample would. It was most likely a sample from an album. Thanks for the help
David Martin
Yoooo. Cool groove, I went with a similar bass sound but without the attack. I like the fx additions, the speed up/slow down on the intro and outro is dope. Do you also make psy? Would love to hear any of your stuff in general.
instaud.io/3YQf Some updates there with timing and melodic changes, haven't started with any mixing yet though.
Matthew Adams
i've heard a lot of psy, but never attempted to make a track. That new intro is solid, too tired for advice right now, but is looking good.
Greeble is like extra detail to make it sound more complex than it really is. It's a 3D modeling term I think. I'm talking about those little glitchy sounds.
Aiden Kelly
When was this?
Aiden Martinez
Kind of not much going on at :26 and for like 20 more seconds but it’s pretty good. What is it for though? Is someone supposed to sing on it?
Noah Ramirez
Anyone recommend any good music production/composition forums? Apart from this one of course. I gravitate towards electronic, rock, folk, ambient and orchestral.
I'm moving my studio to different, smaller - but more "appropriate" room.
>pic related Is a drawing of the dimensions of the room, including the positioning of the desk, monitors and listening position. I am asking for help in what forms of treatment to use in what areas (low end bass traps, broadband diffusers and high freq generic treatment. I will be building them myself (except for the diffusers) from rockwool and wooden frames.
I don't know if you guys are going to have any information on this but I would appreciate any commentary or criticisms of my plans?
The monitors are placed 1/3'rd of the way into the room, with a distance between the middle tweeters and the listening position being the same as I currently have it set up, which allows for both my screens to be *out of the initial line of the speakers*, so unless I get smaller monitors, this is basically the setup I have to use. The issue is that the listening position of this distance, with allowing the monitors to be in the sweet spot - puts the listening position very close to the back wall. The speakers are wide, horizontal mounts (Adam A77X) so turning them vertical is not an option and I really don't want to get rid of these and replace them with the S2V's.
My questions are this: is being so close to the back wall going to result in a very bad listening position, even if it is diffused/trapped etc? What sort of compromise am I going to be making if i move the monitors closer to the back wall (say 1/4 distance instead of 1/3) to allow the listening position to come further up from the back wall? Where do you think is the best position to place bass traps, diffusers/broadband treatments and high freq. treatment respectively? (obviously bass for corners etc).
It's a bit of a balancing act. You have what mentions where you'll get stronger bass frequencies reflecting off the wall behind them if you move the speakers further back (not as much with front-ported speakers like yours though, but still relevant) but you'll also get stronger mid and high reflections coming off the wall behind your listening position if you move the speakers in the other direction.
Small rooms are nightmarish to tame for modes in the low frequencies - comb filtering and flutter echo from more mid and high frequencies are more easily damped with your panels (at your immediate right and left, plus the wall behind the listening position) but you might get away with moving the speakers a little further back towards the wall behind them, as you say try 1/4 distance, and listen for lows starting to change at certain frequency bands. In really small rooms a lot of people listen at very low levels because of how unreliable the bass response gets due to the amount of reflection and peaks and nulls in the room.
decent flip, but only for about 10 seconds. you need to do more at that mark. a lot more.
Samuel Flores
hey thanks for the feed back ! true i feeel the same way too because to me that beat was never actually considered "finished" but i have no idea how to add on to the foundation that i have since i'm still new to making beats and new to ableton
Brayden Williams
just keep at it, m80. focus on making drums for a while.
grab a bunch of drum samples + breaks + kick drum synth. then for a couple of weeks just make some nice sounding 2 to 4 bar loops by using those + chopping out 1 shots from breaks.
