I'm what you might call a RYM historian, and I can tell you why people do this. This is what they call a "positive rating system". It's absolutely retarded and it was invented by retarded people. You see, they want to grade their favorite albums with such autistic precision that they use the 0.5 rating to represent albums they're not interested in at all, and then everything above that is some varying degree of great to them. It's like cutting off everything below 3.0 on a regular scale and then dividing up everything above 3.0 into a new set of decimals. Pure autism.
