Just order an electric guitar and binged tutorials and guides on youtube for 2 days, any good beginner books?
Electric guitar
>Strat
LOLLLLLLLLL
Yeah, you're in for a whole world of consumerist nonsense that doesn't affect any other instrument because it's not only a new invention, but an American one
So you have stratocasters and the like that are old and designed to be mass produced with old tech, gibsons which are constructed like old acoustic guitars, and then modern electrics that start to take advantage of the nature of the instrument and do things that acoustics can't. Like upgrades over the start.
It's very likely that you will fall into this world of consumerist nonsense and spend more time guitar shopping than practicing. Just know this:
The opinions of gutiarists regarding gear don't really mean anything. It's split between ignorance of how non-guitarists think (you'll look like a tryhard with anything but a classic fender! = you'll look like a tryhard to insecure guitarists with anything but a classic fender) just shilling their favorites (ibanez is superior to everything. trust me, i play one) and shilling the favorites of their washed up heroes (that guy from kiss played a les paul, so only a gibson is good enough for real talent)
Here's the real down-low: If it stays in tune it's good, you need at least 22 frets to learn the majority of songs that go anywhere near that high and 22 frets has been the de-facto standard for quite some time, and keep it in a case because unless it's a $4000 carbon fiber guitar it's still sensitive to humidity changes and if it gets knocked off the stand or falls off because it was carelessly put away it'll break.
oh yeah
>books
Just use the internet and ape what the virtuosos of today are doing (ie: steve vai, john petrucci). learn sheet music, not tabs, and don't bother with lessons until you hit a wall and can't figure something out.
Dave Murray was my second guitar hero and to this day I still like superstrats that look like they could’ve been normal the best. Godspeed, trillmaster
I haven't played guitar for a while been working on my keyboard skills.
I'd teach a complete beginner the chords A D & E & have done before, they are kind of easy and get you playing soon.
Is a good site.
There are two main ways to play guitar
Casual/rock n roll is the most common but increases your risk of carpal tunnel and makes playing non-pentatonic scales hard, but makes bending and sideways vibrato easy. This is probably how you think guitar is meant to be played because everyone does it
Classical (pic related) looks silly but decreases your risk of carpal tunnel and makes playing complex runs easy. But it makes bending and sideways vibrato much harder and doing these regularly without resorting to rock/blues technique might give you carpal tunnel anyways.
And then there's flamenco form which is like the contemporary position but you cross your legs to get the guitar higher. It's a pretty good compromise that won't hurt your wrist but might hurt your balls.
If you need books, Hal Leonard’s beginner course is pretty good. Of course, there are plenty of great resources online
I have around £900 to spend on an electric guitar. What would you suggest looking at?
Wasn't expecting such a brutal redpill so early on in this thread.
Anything that stays in tune and has at least 22 frets. So avoid anything from china and indonesia and be biased towards things marketed with "locking tuners" and "graphtech tusq nuts" or otherwise stated "lubricated nuts".
Save money for a hardshell case and an amp.
A half-decent amp is the most important part of playing electric guitar. I recommend the boss katana 50 for poorfags and starters because it sounds almost as good as tube amps. /gg/ hates it because it's popular though and will tell you to buy a $1500 mesa/boogie.
I don’t know where to look for those types of things. Which brands? Seems like they will be ‘metal’ guitars?
I’m pretty sure Fender doesn’t offer those at sub 1k because I was considering buying an american performer.
Feel the rhythm, it’s not just books, a lot of music is just the feeling of it, you’ll understand what I mean once you start understanding how to play.
Get a library card. Great free resources.
Korean "metal" guitars are your best bet yes, but if you buy used you can find things like used made in mexico fenders customized with those features
The finish quality on them is a little wonky though. A lot of guitar prices are just the paintjob and pretty wood grain.
learn your basic chords first, try some easy songs you like using tabs, learn all the notes on the fretboard and then use something like chord chemistry by ted greene (there should be a pdf in the /gg/ OP) if you want to know "theory" and write your own stuff atleast.
when it comes to gear its amp > guitar > effects in priority. dont overspend on guitars but dont get chinese starter planks either.
Have a look at secondhand, you can get something as good as new for £900
I'd buy this but I have too many guitars already.
used schecter, ESP LTD, mexican strat, etc - $300-$400
used low-wattage tube head - $500-600 (PRS MT15, EVH LBX, H&K Tubemeister, vox night train, etc)
harley benton 1x12 speaker cabinet from thomann - $150
guitar cable and speaker cable: $15 each tops
pick: $0.50 (optional)
new pack of strings: $10
actually playing the fucking thing: priceless
all of this stuff holds its value well when bought used so if you quit just sell it on ebay
bong prices adjusted for exchange rates are probably similar
A modern nethod for guitar volume 1,2,3 and a classical collection of your choice. I recommend renaissance pieces.
Just learn some shapes from the internet and practice them, then make your own shit.
Begin with the simple pentatonic scale and dont forget to have fun, cheers
dont listen to this faggot, use tabs, use sheet music and most of all USE YOUR EAR
LEARN SONGS BY EAR
TRANSCRIBE THINGS BY EAR
THIS IS WHAT KEEPS 99% OF PLAYERS AS SHIT
YOUR SOLOING,YOUR CHORD PROGRESSIONS, EVERYTHING RELYS ON YOUR EAR
youtube.com
only youtube musician I trust if you are actually trying to learn and not just play power chords in drop d for a couple months.
ELECTRIC GUITAR?!
noob here
do you have tips on learning songs by ear?
>Yeah, you're in for a whole world of consumerist nonsense that doesn't affect any other instrument because it's not only a new invention, but an American one
Never really thought about it like this before but this is so fucking true, kek.
Based post.
If you're learning how to play then literally just buy any basic epiphone / squire. The whole guitar world is filled with meme placebos, the only real reason to buy a "high end" guitar is if you're touring and need the absolute best parts and durability.
If you spend over $500 on a guitar you're just going to play in your bedroom you're a chump.
Learn the basics from justinguitar and then if you want to move on to lead guitar stuff buy tab books and grade books and learn pieces from them.
get an app/program that helps slowing the music, and then just try and find the notes on the guitar. its okay if you cheat from tabs at first, even a little bit of ear practice is still practice at the end of the day. it requires a bit of patience but once you start getting a feel for what sounds come out ofbwhere on the guitar you will be set
99% of respectable indie/punk/alternative guitarists (ie not boomer buttrock shit) just bought a guitar they thought looked cool. For example, J Mascis bought a jazzmaster because I believe he wanted a jaguar because it looked cool but he didn't have enough money so he got a jazzmaster because it looked cool. Kevin Shields got a jazzmaster because Mascis played one.
Unless you worship Jimmy Page, Hendrix, Slash, etc. just get any old guitar that's in the $200-400 range and then buy pedals and an amp. Plenty of decent bands just use Mexican strats or Squires for example. Only old boomers will tell you you need a tube amp when a $100-250 combo amp is perfectly fine. Especially if you wanna play anything noisy, like shoegaze, punk, indie rock, etc. Get a distortion or fuzz (Blues Driver, Tube Screamer, Rat, Big Muff...) and the kind of guitar you have is kinda irrelevant, because the point of those pedals is they mangle the sound of the guitar and the difference in tone is much less discernable at that point. Even then, 99% of people listening to your music won't care or even notice that you don't have a boutique guitar sound.
Just learn fuckin chords and masturbate them to death
