Look, let’s just get this out of the way. A lot of you aren’t going to “get” this album and that’s fine. Feeble minded listeners and lovers of basic Yea Forumscore, you may exit the same way you came in. But I’m doing us all a favor and calling this like it is right here and now.
There is no need for anything else to be released in 2019, because on July 19th, Lingua Ignota gave us what is WITHOUT DEBATE the album of the year.
It is visceral. It is raw. It is unhinged. It is monolithic.
On CALIGULA, Ms. Ignota pioneers the future of noise and simultaneously redefines everything you thought you knew about abrasive music. Her wails are compelling, just LISTEN to them. They no doubt bubble to the surface from depths of true emotional torment and turmoil. Human magma… ready to scorch the earth and ears of anyone who dares to queue this album. You have been warned.
But CALIGULA is not one-note. You would be a fool to mistakenly assume that. On its hour+ runtime you will hear Lingua truly flex her artistic dynamics. For every tortured wail and shrill scream, there is an equally serene operatic delivery or lofty vocal line. She is the voice of angels. She is the voice of demons. There is a profound balance at work here that modern music simply does not achieve. I challenge you, dear listener, to find ANY record that so eloquently summarizes the sound of having the devil on one shoulder and angel on the other. (Pro tip: there are none. Do not waste your time.) Lingua Ignota has suffered unfathomable horrors that we cannot even begin to speculate, and CALIGULA is an intimate look at her releasing those demons. With each scathing scream we are hearing her purge and release. Purge; release. This album is catharsis in the truest sense and you will not exit it as the same person you enter it.
(Cont'd) Let us analyze the album’s track titles. One may immediately notice the urgency of the song’s names due largely in part to their stylistic capital letters. Naysayers and internet trolls would have you believe that this heavy-handed and unnecessary stylization to express what the music itself cannot. Others would suggest that it’s just Ms. Ignota being struck with a slight case of the ‘tism. But it is neither. Just look at the titles. “FUCKING DEATHDEALER”, “MAY FAILURE BE YOUR NOOSE”, “I AM THE BEAST”. Poetry in and of itself wouldn’t you say? This is insight to a BLEAK, GRIM world. This in animalistic, deep shit. This is not your mother’s music.
FAITHFUL SERVANT FRIEND OF CHRIST is the siren’s call into this tremendously disturbed world. Lingua’s vocals are heaven sent, and deceptively inviting. You are being coaxed down the rabbit hole and into an abyss unlike any that you’ve ever known. You are just too foolish to recognize it… on first listen, anyway. But you have to acknowledge that something is amiss. The track’s title, those smooth vocals, and the Christian-aligned vocals… they do not mesh with the monolithic organ in the background or the album’s general aesthetic, do they? Here is where the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Something is deathly wrong. You are unknowingly sinking into the sound of CALIGULA, and it is too late. Deeper yet into the threshold. Into the human magma.
This is pure fucking art.
Midway through DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR, Ignota’s vocals explode with decay and distortion, warped and skewered with static over haunting piano keys. This is the juxtaposition that keeps this album so fresh and allows it to retain a 10/10, timeless standing. This is the new face of aggressive music. We are entering a new era of unsettling sounds and Lingua is at the helm, steering us off the rails.
(Cont'd) For all the distortion, grit, and suffering there are glimpses of beauty. SORROW! SORROW! SORROW! sees our music savior showcasing her voice as liquid gold. Have you ever heard such a beautiful thing in your life? Like the glow of dawn after surviving a night-long zombie apocalypse. It is these essential moments that allow us to breathe and soak in the aforementioned cycle of PURGE, RELEASE. SUFFER, REPENT. SUFFER, GROW. What was the last album that allowed you to enter the darkness and come out the other side as a new entity? This is why CALILUGA is in a tier of its own.
This is not album of the year. Possible album of the decade. I hesitate to call it album of the life.Because it may very well be album of the AFTERlife.
When we’re all trudging through hell, CALIGULA will still be clenching our heels with a steadfast grip. It is only once a lifetime that we are gifted something so profound that transcends what we all like to simply call “music”. This album is art in its purest and most distilled form. It will never be fully recognized for everything it has to offer, but I do encourage each and every one of you to TRULY listen. Please buy a vinyl copy from linguaignota.bandcamp.com/album/caligula or profoundlorerecords.merchtable.com/music/lingua-ignota-caligula-vinyl-2xlp, sit down with the liner notes and no interruptions, and allow Ms. Ignota’s world to wash over you. You may not like everything that you hear, but it is the sound of the future, and one where we’re all changed in the end… for better or worse.

It's not ironic enough for me. I'll stick to my 90's Japanese noise comps, thank you very much. Lingua Ignota is just pretentious.
It's an unreleased Amy Winehouse album someone found recently.

This another one of those industrial/PE-lite albums you can namedrop in conversations with yuppie urbanites to show them how cutting-edge you are while making sure nobody's gets offended by the "problematic" subject matter? I think I'll pass.
i'll listen to it eventually probably in a couple of months
Hudson Perry
It's more along the lines of the people she worked with on the album (Full of Hell, The Body, Uniform, The Rita), that crowd. But it sounds nothing like the stuff they do. Honestly the album is mostly her flexing her vocal chops.
