I think a lot of his anecdotes and word play is really good on this album especially with a cleaner mix of his vocals than the previous albums. Helps support the delivery well.
I'll post some of my favorite lines from this album.
how the fuck have I never seen the hummingbird before?
hell yeah dude.
by doing everything else really shitty
"Well, God said something but didn't mean it
Everyone's life ends but no one ever completes it
Dry or wet ice, they both melt and you're equally cheated"
why did isaac have to stop doing drugs?
probably to live longer/ dependency thing. I get where you're coming from though because the creativity is totally different. Same thing happened to Ben Gibbard.
"In the motions and the things that you say
It all will fall, fall right into place
As fruit drops, flesh it sags
Everything will fall right into place
When we die, some sink and some lay"
Why is this album talked about so much less than Lonesome Crowded West? As a matter of fact I don't think I've ever seen Good News discussed here. Is it because Float On was really popular?
It gets talked about sometimes but the threads never last long. Most people seem to agree its a good album and their last good one. Although I like a handfull of songs of the ones after. I thik Float On has something to do with it but only marginally so.
Good news is both a departure from form and also a deep dive into some of their more experimental ideas. It is beautifully cohesive though and the whole thing gross on you once imo. Just recently started picking this album apart and theres a lot of special stuff especially in sheer production quality/mixing.
GOAT
I'm with you, I like handfuls of songs from the later stuff. One of my favorites is Spitting Venom because there is a juxtaposition of styles between the beginning and the way the end unfolds.
What's one of your hand picked later album gems?
spitting venom is great, I like parting of the sensory a fair bit too
WELL
YOU
Love Missed the Boat, Ansel, Spitting Venom, Lampshades on Fire, and The Ground Walks
missed the boat is kind of charming I think. tad repetitive but it's hit. lampshades and ground walls are two of my favorites off that record. the tortoise is awesome too imo.
MY BOSS JUST QUIT THE JOB
YOU SAID DO YOU BELIEVE WHAT YOU’RE SAYING?
YEAH RIGHT NOW BUT NOT THAT OFTEN
Yea something about Missed the Boat is just nice to me. I think its the idea of coming to terms with failures and realizing them to make yourself better, and Ansel just gets me in the feels if you know the backstory of how Issac's stepbrother died in an avalanche.
yeah good points. it's nice to have those more personal and introspective moments that Isaac shares. it's probably a key factor to his better lyrics.
