Where did the notion that Jazz sounds like elevator music come from? Every time I try to show someone a few of my favorite Jazz tunes, they say it sounds like elevator music. It is actually very frustrating to me. Take Chick Corea - Spain for reference. This song has everything that "Elevator music" is usually associated with - flutes, latin rhythm, rhodes. To me, it's an example of mastery of improvisation and Jazz songwriting, but people who aren't into music much write it off because of the aforementioned characteristics. What do you make of this, Yea Forums?

probably because back in the 50-80s background music was very popular. the seeburg 1000 and muzak for example. you'd heard them in retail establishments, offices, workplaces, libraries, offices, etc. and there were many 'moods' to fit the theme. easy-listening jazz is one of the more popular themes.

The intro is nice, the head and unison sections are absolutely horrible though, I struggle to see how anyone could derive pleasure from that melody. This is coming from someone who loves jazz. Spain is considered a very square and unhip standard in my experience, maybe try playing people something a little more interesting

Chick Corea is in no way my favorite Jazz artist, and he's clearly not representative of the genre on the whole. But to suggest that he's a bad musician, or that he's reddit, is just plain dumb to me. You're either a pseud or a plebe.

Because plebs like this take it at face value. They lack the taste and intelligence to appreciate the art of Jazz improvisation and can't zoom into the music far enough to hear anything other than wallpaper music.

I'm no expert but I assume it gained that reputation from smooth jazz artists like Kenny G who made literal elevator music, as different as their music was from other jazz.
