I don’t see much actual “discussion” of this record besides vague statements about the album as a whole. What’s your favorite track?
What’s your least favorite? What are your thoughts on the acapella tracks?

I don’t have thoughts about it because I don’t get it.
Favorite Track: Hair Pie Bake 1
Least Favorite: None
Acapella good
People claiming "its just bad" are just as annoying as the "its supposed to be bad." But it's honestly one of my favorite takes on music. I still can't find a record even similar to this.
i could take or leave the acapella tracks desu
favorite track is moonlight on vermont
or when big joan sets up
thats a good one too
Ant man bee is probably my favorite. Its hard for me to place a least favorite because i think every song fits so well into the album. I think the acapella pieces are great additions to it, i think 3 is the perfect number to have.
Being a seasonal autist, I only list listen to TMR in the springtime but when I do I binge on it for 2-3 months at a time. One of my favorite things about the album is that every year when I come back to it, a different set of tracks stands out as my favorites. This past year it was China Pig, My Human Gets Me Blues, and both versions of Hair Pie. Last year it was Well and Dachau Blues. Least favorite track is maybe Wild Life, but I don't dislike a minute of the album.
Moonlight on Vermont and Veteran's Day Poppy sound the most out of place which isn't surprising considering they were recorded before the infamous and tyrannical rehearsal and recording sessions for the rest of the album. They sound more like the material on Strictly Personal and Mirror Man.
The acappella tracks and Dali's Car are 100% necessary as moments of respite from the barrage. "Well" features the best lyrics Don ever wrote.
>The acappella tracks and Dali's Car are 100% necessary as moments of respite from the barrage.
Pretty much my thoughts
Would anyone care to rec some albums with a similar feel? I know nothing is exactly the same but do your best.
John Frusciante’s first album gives me a vibe. Niandra LaDes and Usually just a T shirt.
My favorite track is Sugar 'N' Spikes, I don't think I have a least favorite.
God ween satan, the pod, or pure guava
favorite is veteran's day poppy, perfect closer
no real least favorite, i'd have to listen to the album again
acapellas fit, they don't feel out of place in a really big album like this. the one where don talks to the two kids is pretty creepy though
my favorite CIA asset produced album
>it's a bush recording
>we're out recording the bush
DACHAU BLUES those poor Jews
most songs sound the same and it's like walking on legos for 80 minutes
apt description
Greatest rock album ever. The guitar work is just so otherworldly good when you think about all the inflection and harmonization in all of it, its depth makes
most rock albums sound like child's play. Also really excellent drum work; it's such a perfect sounding album.
Only albums I can think of are its successor (Lick My Decals), and Music to Eat by Hampton Grease Band, which is like their southern cousin.
It's even led by a Colonel.
then don't walk on them you fucking neanderthal
>don’t see much actual “discussion” of this record besides vague statements about the album as a whole.
that's every single post about music in this board, how are you even surprised. you come to this board to discover new music not to discuss it.
good call. i was gonna post the pod next
>and it's like walking on legos for 80 minutes
feels pretty good honestly
>I still can't find a record even similar to this.
Twin Infinitives
1/2 Gentlemen / Not Beasts
Dust Blows and Orange Claw Hammer are fuckin great; they are a reminder of just how pleasing the human voice can be.
Especially Dust, the way the track is captured and spliced has got such a comforting aesthetic quality to it.
Don has such excellent tonation to his voice, I always look forward to hearing those songs.
Favorite: Pena
Least favorite: Moonlight on Vermont
there isn't much to discuss because it's all been covered and some people pretend to like it because their favorite music critics did
Favorite version, hands down. Sorry raging lunatic, endless vocal bantering people. Listen to the arrangements instead of the screaming person fucking everything up for everybody. He should have been told that his mic was on during these sessions, but it was cut WAY the fuck off.
Related story--good dude, but got stuck in a temp band with a dude who tuned his bass E-E-E-E for...why/who knows? The rest of us are feeding off each other, and he's just slamming hard EEEEEE'S and running bad scales. Not relating at all. Thinking he's blending in!!! Take THAT guy an make him the vocalist of this otherwise super tight band. They studied hard...HE DID NOT.
This is my favorite album:
Favorite: Pachuco Cadaver - besides some of the most memorable lyrics on the album, "A Squid Eating Dough in a Polyethylene Bag is Fast and Bulbous, Got Me?", the instrumentation is otherworldly.
Least Favorite: I'm not sure. I love every track dearly.
>What’s your favorite track?
Neon Meate Dream of a Octafish. The moment around 1:45 is amazing.
>What’s your least favorite?
When Big Joan Sets Up. It just doesn't have as much impact on me as the others.
>What are your thoughts on the acapella tracks?
I can do without them, but they are nice.
>its supposed to be bad
Nobody says this.
I will never “get” this album and will forever be convinced that those who do are just pretentious. I like music that experiments and breaks free from normal conventions too, but come the fuck on. As a trained musician I understand the theory, but this is dogshit.
It's really not that hard to get.
A lot of the music is actually pretty normal by rock standards, and the weirder elements of the album are not that much different from stuff found in free jazz, math rock/core, and freak music.
It feels a lot better to listen to when you have a desire to listen to a more gut channeling form of abstract rock music.
Is your pussy glued to a building on fire tho?
Because barely anyone actually likes this unlistenable garbage, they are all pretending in order to look "patrishun"
I hate hipsters so goddamn much.
Sweet Sweet Bulbs is best but I'd probably go with Frownland.
The drums would be god tier on all sorts of different genres.
Try holding up a spork while you listen to it.
Im sorry you guys dont get the album. It's a truly one of a kind experience for me and it channels so much emotion in ways youd never expect.
well maybe if you weren't so retarded you'd actually understand things more, lol
fav track changes but rn it's Ella Guru
least fav: none
acapella tracks are great especially Well
Veteran's Day Poppy is a fucking masterpiece
Actually, I take it back.
A lot of the elements are not that easy to get into (Don's voice/the weird chord structures and progressions), but if you enjoy those things, you really begin
understanding the scope of how accomplished it is in a compositional and expressive sense.
There just aren't many albums that provide as much musical depth, especially rock albums.
>when you think about all the inflection and harmonization
name one chord progression in the album
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
try anything by Old Time Relijun
are you presuming i've actually attempted to understand the exact compositional nature of this album?
i haven't learned any of the music personally, and it's not something i can do just by listening.
idk, maybe Dachau Blues? but desu I love most tracks on this
though of the a capella tracks I do love Well and Orange Claw Hammer in particular
least fav is hard, but maybe Pena? the vocal is a bit gimmicky on that one
agreed, the a capella tracks are great breathers and the lyrics on Well are beautiful
the vocal performances are great
amazing album but not all that similar imo, definitely more accessible
>I like music that experiments and breaks free from normal conventions too
Radiohead doesn't do that though.
you just outed yourself as a pseud lmao
omg the harmonies are so good !! the way he plays that guitar and sings those notes?!? We stan.
lol. are you saying you have to understand the exact nature of harmonization to be able to recognize it in music?
don't really care to understand theory
you do know there's two guitarists in that session right? are you fucking retarded?
you are telling me that you can talk about shit you have no idea about? sounds cool
he's making fun of you, you fucking retard
i think plenty of people have listened to enough music to know what a harmonization is.
then he can not be such an idiot about it obviously lol
ever since i finally got this on vinyl, i've been listening to it religiously. whether it be an acapella, instrumental, or regular composition, it's nothing but captivating from front to back. it plants an earworm in your brain that will forever howl in beefheart's wild vocal manner. i don't care how hard people have jerked this album off, it deserves every bit of it.
fav tracks (off the top of my head): the blimp, fallin' ditch, ant man bee, pachuco cadaver, ella guru, pena, well, moonlight on vermont
>it plants an earworm in your brain that will forever howl in beefheart's wild vocal manner
I've had bits of this album playing in my head almost every day for the longest time
I don't know what it is, it's just so weirdly catchy and memorable
