Define "degeneracy" and convince me that it isn't your subjective moral standards.

His argument is that currently a lot of mainstream music is full of degeneracy and often references degenerate behaviors and reinforces negative moods. While you definitely can see a correlation of this in modern western culture with violence, sex and drug use in music, movies, tv shows, you name it... I don't see how this is a bad thing. It reminds me of the kind of argument a Christian mom would have if they found out their son was listening to Marilyn Manson. It's just a stupid argument. It's always been a stupid argument. People aren't becoming retarded because rap music is now super popular anymore than when shitty hair metal or disco was popular. Western society's issues are not because sex and drugs are mentioned in songs. Jesus christ I've always hated this argument.

I don't think it's appropriate to assume that's someone's intention unless they make it clear that it is. Personally, I think degeneracy should be cracked down upon in a governmental way.

It's pretty obvious that media is the main cause of degenerate behavior, especially in younger people. I myself went down the degenerate path for many years and NIN was my favorite artist during that time..I won't completely blame the music though, we are all responsible for our own actions, but constantly listening to dark, negative, depressing lyrics over and over definitely didn't help. And why do you think they play the same handful of songs over and over on mainstream radio, 24/7? It's very hypnotizing, especially with modern hip hop and pop with the extremely repetitive lyrics and phrases. But like Jung said you have to incorporate your shadow into your life, you can't repress it. So I tend not to listen to the really dark shit that I used to these days, but once in a while I think it's a good thing to use that type of music as an outlet for your anger/sadness. So when I listen to that kind of music now (harsh noise/black metal type of shit) it's more of a catharsis to let those feelings out. But I really can't defend the shit that's played on the radio, it's all soulless, mind numbing, recycled bullshit. At least listen to stuff that has real emotion behind it
