I love folky acoustic stuff (Nick Drake etc), but for some reason can't stand his.

Favourite artist of all time.

While I agree that Bob’s better, I definitely wouldn’t say that Elliott is a run of the mill songwriter.

He looks better with the beard and hat thing going on. XO is my favorite from him. If you remove it from his reputation as a lo-fi sort of dude it's just a really great art pop album. But I think all of his albums are great he's one of my favorite artists :)

His first albums, Roman Candle, s/t and Either/Or all have that minimalistic acoustic guitar/voice lofi sound, so check those out. The s/t is catchier, Roman Candle is a bit more out there.
Their other albums, XO, Figure 8 have a more orchestral, Beatles-like sound.
From a Basement is darker and heavier than those.

Jokes on you, he'd go deeper into a noisier sound and craft the ultimate indie noise rock album.
