The seeds were planted in Laurel Canyon in the 60s.
Frank Zappa, Jim Morrison, and a slew of other names floating around this area all happen to have parents with high military ranks. They all happen to coalesce in Laurel Canyon just in time to form the basis of the hippy movement. Some of these guys aren't even musicians (i.e. The Byrds). Laurel Canyon has this military base at the top of it that was decked with top notch media equipment at the time.
There's just a ton of coincidences that line up the hippy movement to the government. I couldn't unpack all the information right here in a post. Just read the book mentioned here
