What is this kind of pickup called and does it sound like a humbucker or like singlecoils? I can't find youtube comparisons because I don't know what the type is called.
CAGED connected scales in every position. Took me 15 minutes this morning.
Lucas Collins
Is there such thing as a good tube amp for under $500 USD?
Jack Gray
Widerange, and they're just normal humbuckers in a larger cover. The originals from the 70s are different, but they can't make those anymore because of the magnets or something.
Luke Butler
yes
Lucas Diaz

Juan Bell
At that price I would just go solid state
Grayson Jackson
Yes, there are good (but that's a subjective word, isn't it?) tube amps for under $500 USD.
If there's something in my life I regret, it's spending any amount of money on tube amps. Good thing they're all gone now, with the exception of a few tubes I still have lying around.
Out of curiosity, what didn't you like about them?

The transformers ( I still have some around ) are heavy and expensive The fact that the circuits are like really high voltage (in the 500v range). What do you mean I need a 410v bias voltage? The fact that they don't really sound that much better than a TDA2030 or any other cheap automotive audio amp + an opamp for clipping >b-b-b-but it cleans up when you turn the volume down on the guitar knob! SS amps do that too >b-b-b-ut you need to crank it up to hear the difference!

Zachary Brown
Nice gear gramps. Just like they made them in the good ol days, right?
So you're bothered by shit that doesn't really affect you unless you live in a third world country and get your electricity from the community water wheel?
Adrian Gonzalez
>b-b-b-but if it's not american it's not good
Colton Gutierrez
You realize all the components of those amps are chinkshit, right? The same components as amps made in asia. Just shipped to the US and assembled here. So you're just paying for assembly.
Nicholas Hughes
every SS amp I've played grated on my ears unless it was completely clean (compared to how common sterile, tinny cleans are with tube amps) and i had to rely on distortion pedals for it to sound good dirty. why can't SS amps have good distortion built in? is it that hard to replace the preamp with a metalzone?
distortion pedals are solid state too so it's obviously not that
everything that makes tubes sound objectively different is understood and can be replicated even without modelling software so what the fuck is holding SS amps back?
Parker Green
It's just an outdated method to produce audio amps. Shit like this would be fine
Assembly and QC matter more than whether or not a transistor came from Japan
Tubes are high voltage devices is why, and again it doesn't really have practical implications unless you're powering it off the community waterwheel or leaving it on all day until it melts.
Jose Rogers
Yeah, you're right. If its not American or British it really is shit when it comes to tube amps. Don't hate on tube amps if you bought a piece of shit. Why do you think everyone has recorded everything on a Marshall, Fender or Mesa in the past 50+ years? lmao, you're so wrong. Go watch videos where they pull Mesa's apart, everything is made in USA or Japan. Also its the R&D that goes into the amps that you're really paying for and the QC, which chinks don't fucking do to the same level. Go play your shitty Bugera
Samuel Stewart
It's not soundwise. I have never played a ss amp that react like a tube amp. They just don't play the same.
Jeremiah Gutierrez
>and i had to rely on distortion pedals for it to sound good dirty >why can't SS amps have good distortion built in? >is it that hard to replace the preamp with a metalzone?
Not everyone would want to buy an amp that is either totally clean or sounds like an ultra high gain 666 death metal pedal
It's not hard at all to replace the preamp with a metalzone, but with the way modelling is today they just don't bother with it and put a DSP instead of pure analog circuitry, since it's much more versatile to have an audio processor that can be altered by changing some lines of code
Alexander Smith
nice is that a dc5?
Cameron Perez
>it doesn't really have practical implications I don't want to lug around 100kg of vacuum tube electronics, how is that for a practical implication?
>If its not American or British it really is shit when it comes to tube amps Spoken like a true salesman
Leo Perry
of all the outdated aspects of electric guitar the radiused fingerboards the noisy pickups with narrow frequency response people still overwinding them creating more noise and muddy tone to get more output instead of just using a better preamp than a fender champ's single tube the continued use of 1/4" jacks and mono audio cables pickups and cables both being high impedance, leading to signal loss over distance - instead of just using a better preamp before you make the sound the non-locking tremolos, even bigsbys the headstocks still existing the straight frets that can't be intonated some guitars still having 3-saddle bridges and even no-saddle bridges
and you complain because your amp isn't efficient relative to other electronics
yes, it's inefficient because that is the simplest and cheapest way to replicate the sound of old amplifiers.
haha weakling
>literally can not handle the tone
Ryder Parker
lmao, I'm just stating facts. Literally no one would agree that chink made amps sound anywhere as good as much more expensive stuff or are built as well. They just don't spend the money on the R&D or the materials. Its assembly line shit that gets ran through an oscilloscope for 5 mins for QC and thrown into a box with some shit tier warranty
Nolan Foster
An amp made in China but designed in the USA with a USA-provided bill of materials will sound like one also made in the USA but several more out of 100 will fail just as the warranty ends.
Nathaniel Hall
Now this is an outlaw love song if I've ever heard one.

Prove me you can tell a class-D apart from a tube amp without being told which one is which
Also, most of american R&D is done by chinese interchange students anyway, so eitherway you get "chink shit"
>Tube amps are heavy and overpriced. My SS amp is lighter and cheaper. >What's that other bag you're holding mate? >The pedalboard I need to make my SS amp sound good. ugh, all this shit is so heavy...
Caleb Morgan
>no one uses pedalboards with tubeamps
Ayden Rodriguez
>pedals ugh, you are uggo.
Thomas Morgan
People think because electric guitar is an instrument, old is fine.
But it's not even old and a lot of its flaws came out of corporate America so it's not too late to change it.
Still I think at this point people like the mud, like the narrow frequency response, like the start-stop sound of having to using a noise gate, and like the high end loss.
See now you're trying to diverge from what we we're already discussing. I'm not hear to argue about amp types, I'm here to talk about the quality and R&D that goes into existing amps. Mesa and Bogner don't fucking hire chinese to do R&D, everyone in the amp community knows this. Class D is a totally different tech, and BTW an American company called Quilter has the best class D amps, which guess what they spent YEARS researching and developing them unlike chinks. Also the sound is still way different from a good tube amp, its good for cleans but it still falls apart under heavy distortion
Levi Rodriguez
nice image you got from instagram /gg/uy.

believe it or not there are even quantifiable differences between, well i think you've already been told this, otherwise identical guitars made of different pieces of wood youtube.com/watch?v=0Y_tyUjkkhA it's not a very scientific test. something done with 10+ pieces of wood from each species might show that they all average out and the difference is between the pieces of wood themselves and not tree species (unlikely), but it does show that the characteristics of the wood used to make the guitar alter the amplified tone, especially the high end, something unknown to metal players.
in the world of guitars we have in fact figured out how to extract oil from snakes.
>there are quantifiable differences between amps Of course there are if they are different amps, it's not the 50's anymore where there weren't precision components, but it's not like amp A is going to sound 100 kg better, or 3000 USD better than amp B just because it uses tubez.
>in the world of guitars we have in fact figured out how to extract oil from snakes. More like ratailers have figured out how to extract money from players

The price difference between well made SS amps and tube amps is pretty much nothing. You can get a good one between $500 and $1000 transistor or thermionic valve and it's diminishing returns past that.
It's only the really bad sounding practice amps that are cheap. And now all tube practice amps cost less than $150 so the price argument is dead.
>w-weight It's not 100kg it's 2 fucking kilograms, also known as 4.4 pounds you limp-wristed commie.
Well made amps use components rated for high voltages that are less likely to fail. These components cost more, often ten times as much. And there are lots of them. They also use thicker, higher copper content traces and expensive, anything but compact, time consuming to build designs that manage heat better.

How exactly do you practice guitar bros? I've been playing for almost 6 months now, going through Justin's beginner course, and while I know I still have tonnes to learn I'm at the point now where the main thing holding me back is lack of practice / experience rather than knowledge. So what exactly do you do to practice once you've learnt the basics? Do most people just look up random tabs and try to play them?
justinguitar even has practice lessons at the end of each chapter
Joshua Hall
yeah i didnt tune the guitar and the playing isnt perfect. im just concerned about the intro lick i just came up with
Isaiah Anderson
I played along with Oasis and Radiohead albums to learn when I was younger. I had the tab books and would listen to the albums and just play along with the songs until I had everything memorised. This was before I had internet so I relied on books and my ear to work things out.
Just do whatever makes you happy. Learn to play easy songs as it's more fun than running up and down scales in different keys.

Thanks for the reply, I saw a foo fighters tab book on Amazon the other day so I might pick that up and try to learn some whole songs. I always get discouraged when looking up tabs online because half of the time they sound completely off so I think I'd be a lot more motivated to learn if I had the """official""" tabs to go off.
Why violin specifically?
This sounds like a good idea for the future but I don't know enough theory to even want to try to attempt this yet

What about a Nextone Boss stage amp? Anyone done any comparisons against the Tube logic?

guys I'm new into the electric guitar
I'm confused as fuck as i've been practicing picking for a week now (getting huge progress btw) and I'm always doubtful of the correct position for the right hand to rest
some people rest the wrist on the bridge, some prefer to rest their little finger, some just levitate their fucking hand (feels like magic but wtv).
is it really a subjective thing or there is really a superior way to rest your hand on picking indv. strings?
and also, if I resort to a downpicking style (for example Metallica like) should I also use an anchor point for the hand, or should my hand levitate like in a strumming style?
Its subjective. I play an archtop (les paul) so i anchor my whole arm. Leaves room for hybrid picking and varying palm muting. Mute near the bridge with the edge of your palm btw.
Cameron Rogers
Don't memorize downpicking while you're still able to learn alternate picking without fighting against habits. It's free picking estate. Regarding the other issue, I always found anchoring my hand extremely awkward and rest my arm on the side of the guitar for a floating hand style. Anchoring also adds tension and limits movement.

i don't understand buying so many fucking guitars like some people do unless you're like, a touring rock star and worried about breaking a string mid-set or losing a headstock to a dumb roadie. it doesn't feel right to play anything but the one you play the most.
that's your guitar, you spend the most time with it. it's one you bought for a reason, not because you just wanted another one. it's the one that spoke to you, it was your first guitar, or your first good guitar, or something sentimental like that. it's the one that feels like an extension of you. playing other guitars is like cheating.

Bedroom wankers gotta keep themselves interested because they don't play shows, so they buy a bunch of shit
Rock stars have to mitigate show stopping risks, so they buy a bunch of shit
And so the guitar industry not only continued, but continued charging extravagant prices for pedals
William Brooks
Trying to transcribe bass on this song but his tone is so good that I genuinely can't tell if he's playing sustained notes or not can anyone give it a listen I need an opinion
I don't believe you should buy the most expensive guitar and amp you can afford. There are price brackets where price:quality varies wildly and randomly but rarely if ever dips below or raises above certain points, like $500-1500, and you can find disappointing guitars at the high end and great guitars on the low end but you'll almost never find a shit guitar or a downright amazing guitar anywhere between $500 and $1500
But the higher the price brackets go the less you bump those two extremes up towards "highest quality possible" until all your extra money is going into the guitar/amp's quality as a display and conversation piece instead of its quality as a musical instrument. The peak of tone mountain, if you will. And still it's frustrating because you might find a guitar that just doesn't meet the expectations of its price tag (ie: a gibson) in those brackets, though in price brackets that high it becomes apparent what chases tone (guitars at this point will have selling points like intonated frets, innovative pickup technology, onboard EQ, and hand selected woods allowed to settle after each individual cut) and what's directing your money to a marketing department (these guitars will have selling points like heritage and authenticity).
Jonathan Hughes
ok?

Whammy DT suits my needs. You can tune up or down and the pedal lets you fine tune it so it's not just a half step each time. Pair it with a guitar in standard E and one in drop D and it's extremely versatile. If you still want a 3rd guitar after that, make the excuse that you want to tune it to open E and play slide.

Tubefags are silly. Their amps only sound good turned up, and their amps are also much louder for the same wattage rating. So they basically need 1-5w amps to not go deaf but they buy 15-100w amps that cause immediate hearing damage the moment the power tubes start to really color the sound and then play them with the volume on 0.6.
