Disco kicks so much ass and sucks so much dick at the same time. Any genre full of 7 minute plus indulgent masturbatory songs is bound to be that way. Much like it's other cousins in the 70s, jazz funk, prog rock, etc... I listen to lots of disco. You can go from thinking "this fucking song is gay as fuck make it stop" to "holy shit this break is amazing I never want it to stop" over the course of the same track. Breaks can make or break tracks. Some of the most popular and famous disco songs of all time fucking suck and are worthless too. Some of the most amazing ones nobody knows very well or cares about outside of people who collect that shit.
With all that said if you want to listen to disco without having a bad time listen to modern edits. Disco remix culture is alive and well. The people doing it now trim the fat off and keep the good parts, sometimes extending them and repeating them. Find remixers (that's what they are in classic disco terms but what they do is mostly just called "edits" now) you like and explore their work.
