I'm not huge into prog but one of my all tome favorite albums is Black Noise by FM. They were a Toronto prog band that reached moderate popularity in Canada but never broke the market outside the country. They played a brand of prog that was synth heavy, and they didn't have a guitarist, instead using an electric mandolin and violin. Just as much a precursor to synthpop and new wave as they were prog.

Klaatu is definitely prog. Have you listened to Hope?

Prog pop maybe.

If by half-forgotten you mean "never had a high charting single" then I guess you'd be right but there were far many more prog groups that you'll probably have a hard time even finding out about because they were indeed forgotten.

Anyway, in terms of actual forgotten prog (at least in English-speaking countries), try checking out Italian prog groups. I recommend Locanda Delle Fate to start

I guess you could listen to gong, but I wouldn't recommend it

Not op, but I find that for the most part those itallian groups once you pass the novelty of them being italian they dont offer much and are pretty mediocre, I do like a couple pfm albums but bms for example gets old real quick

budgie

Bump for interest, I like prog and obscure/lost music

Renaissance
Yezda urfa
khan
Aphrodite child
Mahavishnu orchestra
Arti & mestieri ( tilt!)
Magma
The trip ( Caronte)
Matching mole ( not sure if prog)
Shakti ( mahavishnu guitarist)

They are here, seeing as any time someone wants to start a prog thread they always post Yes, or Rush and then circlejerk over them by posting every album cover they can find instead of siting other bands. See, OP confused them by posting something that isn't Yes or Rush, and now they're ITT lurking, forced to find something else because they haven't heard most of the bands posted here. If he had started a normal prog thread with no restrictions, or a "god-tier prog" thread, the very first reply would've been Yes, or Rush... It never fails. It's like how every "god-tier metal" thread everyone insists on posting Megadeth, or shitty ass Gojira or some other djent trash that 12 year old's like nowadays

Try a band called Eloy.
