Rock isn't the popular, mainstream genre right now. I'm totally fine with that since I like punk, metal, and indie music, which are niche genres to begin with. If rock isn't the mainstream genre, there can't really be rockstars playing rock.

When I think of the rockstar era, the last ones that really come to mind are the garage rock revival of bands like The Libertines, The White Stripes, and Arctic Monkeys, which I liked, and the emo-pop era of bands like My Chemical Romance, which I didn't.

Of course, there are still rock music celebrities. Whether you like it or not, the members of mainstream rock bands like Imagine Dragons, Twenty One Pilots, and Coldplay are stars and rock musicians, ergo rockstars. But you're probably not happy with that because you want them to be more fucked up on drugs, or something stupid like that. It can't be the actual quality of the music that really upsets you, though, because the glam tranny faggots* you're into didn't do anything better than these awful bands.

Well said, that's why I always found glam metal horrowingly depressing, and punk and extreme metal uplifting - the latter were about creating art. The glam metal kids dropped everything from school to their families for the dream that they'd get to be a big rock star and party hard. It was a false promise, and ultimately a waste. You look at the punk rockers, or the death metal or black metal guys, and it was never about making it big. It was about making really cool albums and showing them to people, maybe just your friends, or some random people at a club. That's inspiring. Geeky kids in Tampa, Florida, who felt disconnected from the LA thrash scene, not giving a fuck and trading tapes with each other about the stuff they were into, from complex horror-filled compositions to horror story telling and a demonic or brutal vibe... because that's what they found cool and fun. That's so much better of a story than a bunch of kids desperately trying to make it as a big pop act in LA, getting approval and fucking up their brains with coke and whisky.

Yeah that's idealistic and all, but every one of those bands wanted to be bigger than they were even if they pretended not to because that was part of the image. I remember faintly death metal bands who were mad at Slipknot for not taking them on tour once they blew and making them more famous or whatever it is they thought would happen because they influenced them.

What I find depressing is that you can't chase your dream and make a living in rock n roll, the odds were slim back then and you had to have major balls to even try but there was hope because lots of bands did make it, now you'd just be a fucking moron. KISS are all set for life and they were two street kids who would have ended up in jail without rock n roll, and two guys who basically came from nothing and would never have amounted to much other than mediocrity. That's the dream people in the 80s were chasing, were allowed to, and could achieve potentially....not just hair bands, but thrash bands, English metal bands, whatever....it WAS a possibility. Yes, it's idealistic to just make art for the sake of it and get nothing in return, but who the fuck honestly wants that? You want to be able to do it for a living. If an office job seems like a good life to you, you never would have had the drive to make it in a band anyway.

I think groups like Ace of Base may well have been the nadir of pop music in the last 30 or so years. The "grunge killed hair metal" meme is just that. Hair metal was already done with by that time. In the first half of the 90s the radio was filled with nightmare fuel stuff like Roxette, Paula Abdul, Richard Marx, Ace of Base, Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli, New Edition, and more. The absolutely soulless corporate pop of those years is something that you never want to see again. As for Ace of Base, I don't see the appeal at all. The girls weren't all that much to look at, the songs were incredibly flat and feel like they were made by committee, the melodies are only average, and the singing isn't anything special.

I didn't like AoB because singer Ulf Ekberg used to be in a Nazi/WN punk band although he's since said he regrets it. To me they're just another average 90s pop group with no particularly good or bad qualities.

Minor correction: New Edition was on hiatus from 1989-91. Bobby Brown was big in the late 80s, and Bell Biv Devoe - a spin-off of three NE members - also had some hits.

Yeah those are what I was remembering. But it doesn't change my point. I'm aware that there was still some hair metal in the charts from 89-91. In particular, there were big ballad hits from Mr. Big and Extreme (both pretty good songs too). But I maintain that the form was really waning from the 87-88 heyday when Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, GNR, Whitesnake, Great White, and others had such big hits. 89 and 90, in particular, were dominated by that wimpy programmed stuff. In the early 90s, that stuff was swept out of the charts not only by grunge, but also by grrl rockers like Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan and also by some major hip-hop hits.

That's how I remember it anyway.

If you want to know just how manufactured AoB are, the group is still active but the Berggen sisters were replaced by a pair of much younger girls.
