This is the definitely the greatest album of all time. The lyrics are on par and I'd argue better than the greats and it has has some of the most powerful vocals and music to go along with them. Specifically the climax of the songs. It has no filler at all. Every song is just as beautiful as the one before.

It's bad, sorry. Try listening to some Archers of LOAF.
annoying voice, boring songs
She's literally great value Kate Bush.
Kate Bush lyrics are shit and Kate sings "better" but not better.
she is nowhere near Bush's league in any way
Kate Bush is not in any league.
i like have one on me more but i definitely understand where youre coming from. the strings on this entire album are so beautiful. i also find it amazing how she can write better rhyme schemes than 95% of rappers and also sing extremely well. must take her forever to write songs
The writing is honestly Ulysses tier at some points
she's not bush league
Shut the fuck up you literal retard that's not even close to true
>Kate Bush lyrics are shit
Imagine thinking this, knowing she wrote Wuthering Heights as a fucking teenager.
It's great for her age but it's not amazing. Do you really think she compares to Joanna/Cohen/Dylan?
It's definitely up there user - I agree.
Not him but no, Kates "thing" was never lyrics. She uses lyrics as a side dish not the main course like Joanna/Dylan etc. Kate and Joanna make a really bad comparison even if they do draw from a lot of the same inspiratons or follow some similar themes.
Just because you want to fuck her doesn't mean she makes listenable music.
Well said sir
Let's be honest they're not up to Joanna's
On a zen level, I much prefer the lyrics to almost every song of Bush’s. Joanna Newsom is a great musician, but I can’t take her lyrics that seriously. They’re good on a clever level, but never reach the philosophical depths that Kate does.
It's a 10 but I kinda prefer Have one on me
>The lyrics are on par and I'd argue better than the greats
The "greats" of popular music are pretty bad when compared to the greats of real lyric poetry
Who cares
Your mom haha
she, beefheart, and newman are the only pop artists that compare lyrically
It's true. Non-believers must hang
Joanna is a lot more comparable to Joni than Kate Bush
And compared to the greats of literature real poets are pretty bad.
Absolutely false. Homer and Sappho are far better than anything any novelist has every produced (presuming this is what you mean by "literature")
I’ve tried a couple times with this, Divers and HOOM but I just can’t into. I’m determined to, because I don’t dislike it at all. But I always just end up putting on some Julia Holter instead.
Try her first album. Much different than the rest of them.
Ys has her most complicated songwriting but her voice didn't truly git gud until HOOM.
>Kate Bush
>good
Those lyrics are shit
I prefer Holters’ dreamy lyrics too
Reposting this from the archive. Shoutouts to the dude on YouTube that did the work of cleaning up this bootleg and removing the glitches that were in it.
Joanna Newsom - Live at Bottletree, Birmingham, AL (2006) [V0]
>Bootleg from Joanna's Ys tour. She plays the album in its entirety, among other songs, with the backing arrangments played on various folk instruments by her touring band. I think if the studio cuts had these versions of the arrangements then Ys would probably be the greatest folk album of all time.

Dante’s Paradiso is widely considered the most important work of literature of all time, and it is poetry. Nowadays though, poetry mostly sucks, but so does most prose.
I thought the bible was the most important lol
The divine comedy is the closest thing to the Bible, which is the benchmark everything in the west is held up to
Sawdust and Diamonds is fantastic, and beautiful as anything on Astral Weeks. But sometimes the perambulatory nature loses me like in Only Skin, and something with the backing instruments mixing is off to me.
Sappho certainly did not write anything near as good as Moby Dick or the Brothers K, lmao.
that cosmia arrangement is the same one that's on the ys street band ep if you didn't know.
This is really good btw
I tried getting into this album, gave it like three listens during my current time off work and once during my way to work. But I just can't get into it. It feels too all over the place. The harp parts are often not very memorable and start to enter wank territory. All the orchestral parts don't actually interplay with the harp/vocals at all most of the time, it feels like they were added after everything else was done (big exception being the climax bit to Cosmia.) Personally I don't care for lyrics in music, especially stuff that tries to be as overtly quirky/colorful as this record; like I guess it would be cool to read up but this is music not poetry. There are a ton of reviews that talk of there being zero filler on this record, I personally disagree.
Have you listened to her other albums? Specifically Milk Eyed Mender and Have one on me?
Nope.
Made a fancy bindup of Joannas lyrics for my wife a few years ago after she went on about Monkey & Bear for like 20 mins. I don't really know shit about poetry but I know she loves her along with her old fancy dude poets.
that sounds like it was a nice gift user.
I remember freshmen year too!
I disagree. Imo this album lacks soul. It’s just too airy, too desperate to achieve something, an aesthetic or whatever. It wants to be this huge medieval progfolk masterpiece and at times it just goes overboard. Of course it has some great moments but I do not think this is her best album.
Have One On Me is more grounded. It’s every bit as complex, but the songs have focus and direction. It feels earthy, warm and human. There is more variety in the arrangements and more sophistication in the songwriting even if it is more subtle. Not to mention her voice improved so much. I prefer it over Ys. It’s a huge fucking album but there is no filler, every song is so meticulously written and melancholic. Divers is also really great. Ys is good too but it is way overrated in the context of her discography
Try them out. The other ones don't have the orchestra. HOOM is like Ys but more refined and MEM just is completely different to both.
Name a better lyricist retard
Townes van Zandt
lol
You just named the epitome of freshman year discovery of country songwriters.
I.... agree!
Sawdust is literally the most beautiful song of all time
Simon Finn
how can psued garbage be the best album of all time?
No one accepts that there exists an artist who is better than their favorite artist at something, be it writing or singing, etc. That poster could have rattled off the most obscure or a really popular songwriter but it wouldn't have matter. Your mind's closed.
These lyrics are really bad.
>Jerusalem was made by a guy
Oh I forget his name
And Jesus was a drop-out
A king who bore no crown
Only his long hair
flowing and blowing in the wind
And Jesus was a fisherman
That's all he had to say
Oh yeah, said "Now follow me disciples.
Lead your lives a different way."
Actual good lyrics he tried to copy
And Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching from his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain only drowning men could see him
He said all men will be sailors then until the sea shall free them
But he himself was broken, long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human, he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
explain what is bad about them
She isn't my favorite artist or songwriter. Townes lyrics are not comparable to the greats and known to anyone who is interested in these things (like the guy who posted under mine). I'm just curious who he thinks is so much better than Joanna because she is 100% at least on par with the great songwriters.
Based
And where do all these highways go, now that we are free?
Why are the armies marching still that were coming home to me?
O lady with your legs so fine, O stranger at your wheel
You are locked into your suffering and your pleasures are the seal
You're just being ignorant now. He is labelled the songwriter's songwriter by... guess who? Professional songwriters. What is the criteria for lyrics to be compared in the hypothetical face-off? The amount of words used? Subject matter? How cool the songwriter is?
Anyone with actual knowledge on the subject would not call Townes one of the greats or show his lack of knowledge on the subject. It's like calling Tarantino one of the greats.
>He is labelled the songwriter's songwriter by... guess who? Professional songwriters.
Who says this?
