In the case of these losers it was because you could always count on one drummer being too stoned to keep proper time.
to sabotage other bands by hogging a scarce resource
It doesn't.
The Grateful Dead/Dead & Co don't have 2 drummers in the typical fashion. Mickey is more of an alternate percussionist that acts as a drummer simultaneously. If either one of them lost their time it would sound vacant. Basically, you can't have one without the other, and you can't have The Dead without them working together.
They don't, they were arguably at their best after Mickey bailed.
They went downhill after Pigpen. Lesh, Weir, and Garcia were pretty based. Drummers who cares. Keys who cares. The various roasties they enlisted ruined every song they were present on.

potentially, they can be used in the same way that a band might use 2 guitars (rhythm guitar and melody). having 2 drummers can allow for more complex percussion and depth of sound.
In addition to boosting their mental health, having a companion can also improve your drummer's physical health. As drummers grow older, lack of exercise could cause various medical problems. Drummers like to play with each other. This can give them a lot more exercise than they'd get alone.

Having two drummers would make that situation even worse. You're a fucking idiot.
Allman Brothers Band did double percussion right. Have a core drummer and an african to do flavorful supplemental drums. Based Jai 'Jaimoe' Johanny Johanson.
2 drummers in a rock band? You are like little baby men.
Because the guy that's supposed to be the drummer is a heroine addict
King gizzard and the lizard wizard does it because one needs a break
they literally are playing drums nonstop
