Merzbow

look into japanese shoegaze

Like city pop? Look up a Junko Ohashi song on YouTube and listen to the recommended albums. Taeko Onuki, Lamp, and Shintaro Sakamoto would be some ones she'd probably like.

Yellow Magic Orchestra is god-tier, and the work of its members solo, especially Sakamoto Ryuuichi, is really good too. Their albums aren't very long, under 40 minutes usually, so I'd just go in order of release. The first two albums have most of the songs most people know anyway, but their later albums are also really great. They are a bit different but equally great live, some of their songs work better that way, so don't skip the live albums; there is a fair bit of professionally taped concert footage on YouTube which is great too

visual kei is the best genre of japanese music

buck-tick

lowercase is less toxic

For real what the fuck did Japan do with all the western music that is so radically different that it's worth seeking out as a whole exclusive domain in itself?

>ichiko aoba - comfiest folk on the planet - i recommend 0
>shiina ringo - best art pop you'll find in japan - i recommend shoso strip or kalk zamen kuri no hana
>douji morita - dreary psych-folk that's amazing - i recommend mother sky
>izumi makura - comfy hip hop, only the early stuff is really worth listening to, mixing is a little bad though - i recommend her 2015 album
>melt-banana - great punk with a female vocalist - i recommend fetch
>yoshiko sai - psych-folk like douji morita, just less dreary, still pretty great - i recommend taiji no yume
>kinoko teikoku - great shoegaze that really gets what it goes for texture-wise - i recommend uzu ni naru
>gesu no kiwami otome - fun pop rock that keeps good energy going - i recommend their latest album
>haruhomi hosono - would equate him to john lennon in j-rock's cannon, absolutely innovative and was part of the pivotal band "happy end" - i recommend hosono house

Japan is probably the biggest hotbed of interesting and great music, unfortunately it's got a shit reputation because of weebs, which I'm guessing your crush is. Anyway, here's a quick overview of jap music -

Visual kei has spawned the most good japanese music and is one of the best rock sub-genres, but X Japan's only good release is Art of Life, everything else by them is shit dad rock. Pic related is the best album of all time imo, that's the first thing you've got to check out, japanese or not.

Other great visual kei includes Malice Mizer, Guniw Tools, Buck-Tick, Dir en Grey, Madeth Gray'll, Plastic Tree, Lareine and Luna Sea among others.

For pop, the best stuff is city pop like Tatsuro Yamashita and Taeko Onuki. Start with the song Plastic Love by Mariya Takeuchi and see if you like it. Some contemporary J-pop like Aya Matsuura is worth checking out too.

If video game OSTs count, then Nier Automata, Persona 5, Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, Zelda and Chrono Trigger are among the best. For anime soundtracks, Cowboy Bebop and Miyazaki films like My Neighbor Totoro are the most iconic.

For folk, listen to Doji Morita's A Boy and if you like that then check out artists like Ichiko Aoba and Daisuke Tobari.

Other random good artists: Shiina Ringo, Yellow Magic Orchestra, MONO, Akiko Yano, BORIS, Midori, Boredoms, Les Rallizes dénudés and Fishmans.

This RYM list is pretty comprehensive and includes most of what I've included plus more:

>but X Japan's only good release is Art of Life, everything else by them is shit dad rock
What. They have a lot of good shit, and if we're going by memes, then all their stuff is "dadshit" since it was released before 99% of Yea Forums was born.
>Gackt is the best album of all time
Oh, nevermind, not taking you seriously then (it's a nice abum, but best of all time? please)
>Malice Mizer
Actually much better than anything Gackt solo. Any MM album is better than Mars
>Guniw Tools
Pretty cool. I don't think they consider themselves visual though
>Buck-Tick
legendary band, must listen
>DEG
yeah one of the most well known bands outside of Japan. They had a weak mid-career, but overall have produced great albums, great live too
>Madeth
Eh. Kinda derivative mid-90s kote kei. They are legendary but their music isn't that special. as far as indies kote stuff goes, I'd prefer something like Eliphas Levi, much more creative musically.
