Shonen Knife is popular through

Ask the japanese for a non-biased answer, no one here really knows (desu I think that visual kei etc is just more noticed in the west because it stands out more from western punk)

Not colorful and cutesy enough for them.

But Shonen Knife is more "fun" than most punk.

Look at "The Blue Hearts", they were a punk band that nailed a shit ton of hits on Japan (being japanese themselves) and are a classic band around there. It's not that they weren't into Punk Rock, just not "negative" punk rock.

for Latin fucks, The Blue Hearts would be like Japan's "Hombres G" as in, everybody knows at least their major hits.

Yes because Shonen Knife is ramonescore

Is glam rock big in Japan or are you just saying that Visual Kei is "glam rock" while ignoring that glam rock encompasses real genres of music.

indeed.
When I was studying for an exchange year on japan, both Blue Hearts's 1987 s/t and Shonen Knife's Pretty Little Baka Guy, helped me get used to the language.

Nailed it.

Punk was a movement against the mainstream styles of music at the time, but those styles were never popular in Japan in the first place so they had no reason to rebel against them.

Japan had a huge punk scene in the Ramones' day, and continues to. What are you on about?

What the fuck are you talking about? One of the biggest indie bands from anywhere is Boredoms, they're literally on par with Sonic Youth and Swans. There's an entire genre called Japanese hardcore, and bands like GISM and Confuse are legendary in d-beat. One of the key garage punk bands is the Japanese band Guitar Wolf. A notable Yea Forumscore bands is Mass of the Fermenting Dregs. One of the key extreme metal bands right now is Melt-Banana.

What the fuck.

That stuff is more popular in US then it is in Japan though.

>extreme metal
>Melt-Banana

uhhhh

Maybe, but I find the claim extremely dubious. For one thing, when I went to Tokyo a few years ago, all the shops were playing American indie bands like the Pixies. I just find the idea it wasn't big extremely hard to believe. The punk aesthetic is even incorporated in their media - directors like Takashi Miike were very influenced by punk, and that's obvious if you watch a movie like Sukiyaki Western Django

they're literally a noisecore/noise rock/grindcore band

Grindcore is a genre of both hardcore punk and extreme metal

check out this awesome 70's punk documentary. it features live showcasing of some really great bands. TOKYO ROCKERS

I should also mention, in Tokyo I found shops explicitly catering to punk/goth/alternative clothing

Japan's punk scene in the 70's coincided greatly with there western counterparts. Not only did Japan spawn really great punk bands, but also post punk, and new wave. There is also some very distinct about japanese alternative music that I just cannot put my mind around. Maybe it is the language, or the cultural influence? but regardless Japan has definitely had, and has a strong punk history. The japanese band Friction, were even influenced by the New York no wave scene after visiting the U.S., and you can hear it in their music.
