Any recommendations for a single coil sized humbucker that will chug? Was thinking a Duncan JB jr or lil screamin demon maybe. Looking for something that’ll sound thick
Damn, where do all these good opinions on /gg/ suddenly come from

Reposting from the previous thread:
Guys, I need help. First time posting in these threads. I've been playing for a few years now and only today have I learned a concerning thing about myself that explains why some chords (particularly barre) have been so hard for me. Apparently, the ring finger is supposed to be able to bend backwards. I never knew this. Saw it today when I was playing with my friend. My ring finger simply cannot bend at the last joint so that I can hold barre chords with just two fingers.
Pic related. I'm pressing as hard as I can and the finger is still mostly flat. It's 100% genetic from my fathers side, too, his fingers are the same, as are my older bros. Younger bro and mom can bend their finger like that.
This forces me to play the barres with all 4 fingers, which means I can't use my pinky for any funky stuff in more jazzy chords. Anyone else have or had this? I know technically I should just adapt and have that be my style of playing but barres are too important for me to not be able to play them easily and fast. And
I assume you mean Steel Panther? Never listened to them.
Adam Sanchez
Because you only listen to Insane Clown Posse.
Benjamin Hall
Bridge. Have a couple Duncan SSL-1s in the neck and middle that I love but single coil bridge tone isn’t really doing it anymore for me. It seems like quite a few single sized HBs are trying to retain some strat bridge tone but I’m hoping to get away from that. Sounds like the screaming demon does that
Sebastian Evans
Work with what you've got and use different chords barres are lame anyway
Brayden Ortiz
Not since that one guy played them for me in highschool that one time.
Oliver Lewis
those are actually rad
Hunter Rogers
My ring finger CAN bend back but I still play bar chords with 4 fingers. It's just a preference for me. I've been able to play barre chords since the first month I started playing guitar but I never practiced the ring finger barre since I didn't care for it.
Ian Martinez
Yeah, I figured that was gonna be the answer. Thought maybe there was a way to get that finger to bend that isn't surgery

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in Gibson Guitar Lessons, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Dean, and I have over 300 confirmed litigations. I am trained in dadrock and I'm the top pentatonic blues player in the entire Guitar Center. You are nothing to me but just another poorass. I will Springsteen you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of lawyers across the USA and your patents are being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your wallet. You're fucking poor, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can post embarrassing videos I later delete over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in the blues, but I have access to the entire AC/DC discography and I will use it to its full extent to powerchord your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy Authenticity™ your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the inflated pricetag, you goddamn idiot. I will noodle aimlessly all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking poor, kiddo.

Is there some way to make the whammy bar on my strat looser? Will changing the springs help? It's a lot more stiff than it should be.
Colton Campbell
lighter gauge strings
Matthew Turner
provided you mean the actually whammy, and not the bushings the bar screws into, then yes different spring, or just remove one of the 3 springs.
Daniel Hernandez
Removing springs, but you'll have to go lighter strings. It's a delicate balance.
Henry Allen
have you messed with the tremclaw screws? that iis where you balance it for two way fiddle stick action

I'm using 8-38. Tried it already. A single on of my springs is enough to keep the bridge stable but the tremolo arm still feels just as stiff regardless of the number of strings. I use 10-46 but I'm using 8-38 right now. Yeah but I think I know how it works so it's not a problem.
Eli Perry
>just as stiff regardless of the number of strings. I meant springs.
Jordan Bailey
I'm beginning to think you're retarded if you're using 8s with one spring and still think it's too stiff How frickin' loose do you expect that bitch to be?
Kayden White
try loosening out screws that hold the claw in the body. probably look up online how long the screw is before you go too nuts lol
Ian Garcia
That's what I'm trying to explain, the stiffness of the tremolo arm stays the same or changes just very slightly regardless of the gauges of the strings or the number of springs.
John Thomas
its never gonna be soft enough that you arnt overcoming the tension of springs that hold the bridge flush in opposition to the string tension. if its still an issue, you might just be weak or have a very undeveloped technique.
Kayden Nelson
Alright, I think you're right. Just to be sure it feels stiff only when I'm trying to divebomb or do some other crazy shit. When I try to use it normally for vibratos or Gilmour like stuff it feels okay. Is that how it's supposed to be?
Jose Price

because the durability of ebony is pointless for a fretted instrument so in the end it's a waste of ebony that could have been used for a clarinet
I can do you one better >J. Reynolds knockoff I rescued from my friend's basement It's unironically one of my favorite guitars though. It plays better than it has any right to.
I don't think you're an authority on anything, dean man. Especially when your strat is a metal plank edition.
Ethan Price
But it's a generic guitar shape that predates gibson as a company, so they didn't steal anything
They also don't have a right to anything that's a long running element of culture. It's like toyota trying to trademark the shape of a pickup truck as "the tacoma" and suing everyone else making something that looks like a truck whether or not it says tacoma on it
I dont think my mia is very metal at all. The shawbucker is a low output humbucker.
Connor Jenkins
You don't need high output pickups for metal. Medium output is usually considered better, plus an overdrive or boost pedal, so you get more definition and less muddy hard clipping.

They didn't even steal the idea, they apologized to him after stealing the idea from fender, saying that he was ahead of the curve.

Second of all boosts and pedals have nothing to do with you accusing my strat of being metal. Is my lp copy metal?
Any suggestions on what to do with this flea market find? It's pretty fucked right now. None of the strings ring out and something's wrong with the input jack - can't fully plug in a cable.
Has anyone here ever restored a vintage guitar? Should I try doing it myself? Or bring it to my local luthier and see what he thinks?
Yeah but it's the perfect size if you want to give me a handjob.

Guitarists can't just join a band. Everyone plays guitar, when a band needs a new guitarist they just bring in one of their friends or someone that's already in the scene to fill in. You have to start your own project as a guitarist
This. I've been in three bands as a bassist but never as a guitarist, even though I'm much better at guitar.
Sebastian Bell
he reminds me of this board so much damn spooky tunning
Luke Myers
When starting out with guitars, if i plan on doing a lot of metal is it best to get something with a whammy bar to start or is it better to start with a more standard guitar? Also what books are best for beginning? Is the website on sticky a meme? Or is it best just to practice theory with scales and your favorite songs? Also if mostly interested in classical/jazz aside from metal is what besides sabbath is good to start off with? Thank you for your time in advance.
Noah Thompson
A whammy is cool for extra effects and dive bombing. The only con is that it's more difficult to set-up if you change anything on the guitar; i.e. changing string gauge. That's true for all guitars but a hard tail is much simpler and stays in tune better because it has less moving parts.
For theory and learning, YouTube is a great place. Most guitar books are similar enough that one isn't truly above another. The things that helped me make large progress was learning the Major Scale(which is the most basic of theory), the CAGED system, learning what keys are, and the number system for chords. Those basic things will carry you on for years while you learn more advanced theory.
Brayden Perry
cheap whammy bridges suck dick and don't hold tune. if they do they won't after a few years of use. good hardtail playing is more impressive anyways. books are dated sort of, it's a good way to learn to play guitar like a sucker. if you study jazz guitar instead you will be better at every genre. jazz standards. better learn your fingerpicking boyo.
Ryder Nelson
First off, you want an anime guitar. It's a fact that they have better tone than non-anime guitars. I recommend the starter version Sayo M-2 since you probably can't drop $5000 on playing the same axe as the best anime girl in the world and K-On is so last decade. I started with an epiphone LP but I'm pretty sure this is what kids like these days. The LTD actives are fine pickups, but you might want to upgrade to seymour duncans later when you're dissatisfied with your technique and think spending money will fix it.
Next, you want a cute, versatile amp with light up tubes. This will make people think you are more talented than you actually are and sound pretty cool. Back in my day we played marshalls that didn't light up. These are cooler. Combine it with a thomann 1x12 cabinet because now that you've spent $1500 on everything else you can't afford anything fancier.
Now you're all set to play slayer riffs in the middle of the night and yell at your dad, and you'll have spent so much money on such ridiculous looking gear that you will be motivated to develop your talent such that the investment will be worth it and people will be so impressed by your playing they'll forget to ask why your guitar says "bang dream! roselia" on it.
Best anime guitar is a strandberg I don't actually know shit about anime but I know someone's posted some anime girl with a strandberg
Aiden Rivera
>What are you all looking at getting/ trying out next?
Was thinking of getting an American Strat but I've started to really think if the price tag is worth it. I feel like having two electric guitars is too much as well.
It's six string maple flame blue strandberg, because anime girls can't reach the 7th and 8th strings. And anime guitars are always blue or red for some reason.
Wyatt Scott
Get a Squier. Not joking. An affinity will at least get you want and you can upgrade it/mod it to your pleasure without feeling like you're messing up something really expensive.
Zachary Perry
>Only play djent >No anime girls for me to look up to

Metallica vs Megadeth?
Connor Robinson
They're both fine.
Ethan Collins
Used to have a Squier, it was alright but I eventually sold it. I'm not really a fan of the whole upgrading business, I want a nice instrument I can keep stock and play forever.
I'm specifically looking for a 57 AVRI Strat in Lake Placid Blue but everybody's overpricing them on Reverb. I considered Fender's Mod Shop thing but it is way too overpriced.

Thank you guys for your response. I think ill get a hard tail for now, youtube for technique, focus mainly on jazz to get started, learn circle of 5ths, scales, figure out what Number system for chords is. Maybe play some metal on the side for fun? Idk haha. I found a korea dean with upgraded stuff on it such as pickups tuners and bridge for 300, do you think thats better than a G&l s500? Both roughly same price i just think the humbuckers will do more.
Asher Howard
Shut the fuck up you massive autist faggot
Christian Bell
the guitar is a virtuosic instrument for soloists, it is capable of accompanying itself. you dont need one
Adrian Myers
>you will never be a big breasted bassist It hurts
G&L is a good brand. It's the company Leo Fender was last at and did some great things. The S500 is definitely an upgrade from a Strat. It's a refinement on an already great guitar. The S500 has MFD pickups which are unique, but the coolest part is the adjustable pole pieces. You can customize the sound you want with pickup height and pole piece height. They are pretty versitile pickups. Plus it has a trem you can do whammy stuff on it. At 300 i'd pick it up in a heart beat.
Ethan Cox
And yet we continue to outdo ourselves. If we put this much effort into playing guitar we'd be masters of the art.
Sebastian Nelson
Youd recommend it over the korea dean zero explorer with duncans? Ill check it out. Yeah theyre both 300.
Jordan Walker
if it is a real s500, check this video for yourself. The controls are really great.
most thrash is pretty shit. between the two bands there's maybe 10-14 good songs and a whole bunch of crap. many other thrash bands only have one good song to their name. sometimes two.
djent (prog metal), jazz fusion, neo-soul, and japanese rock are the only consistently good guitar genres and J-rock only for westerners because your ears aren't used to the chord progressions and voicings they overuse over there (holy shit, it's not II-V-I or I–V–vi–IV! holy shit, it's not a first position chord!). to a nip all that shit sounds played out.
Juan Bell
Upon further review its a g&l tribute instead of just g&l, still worth?
David Fisher
no not really
if you want jazz and metal just get something with EMGs, they have fuller sounding clean tones, sound more defined than normal pickups when distorted (both due to the much broader, flatter frequency response with a bias towards the mids), and respond more flexibly to EQ in the signal chain. the sound of a lot of 80s and omwards metal is EMGs, and jazz guys love them as much as low output neck humbuckers.
just don't set them too close to the strings like a lot of metal babbies do for MOAR GAIN. the internal preamp will distort the signal if it's too strong due to proximity. X series EMG pickups have more headroom to prevent that, as do any EMGs running off 18v (more like "guaranteed to be at least 9v")
Evan Collins
That will be more like a Stratocaster. The Tribute line tries to be close to the Fender guitars. The main difference is the pickups. They aren't the MFD that G&L came up with, but that's totally fine. The volume, and tone knobs are the same(one for treble and one for bass), the tremolo is the same. It doesn't have that switch that will let you get bridge+neck or all three pickups at once. Still a solid guitar. And if you want a heavier sound, you can get humbucker pickups that are single coil if you like.
Thomas Lee
single coil sized*** That's what I meant to say
Eli Thomas
so much different info, im going to have to do some more research before picking up a guitar i guess haha.
Dominic Smith
Guitars are personal preference is why >Everyone: Buy my favorite You have to go out, live your life, and try stuff. But you don't know what you want until you've been playing for two years.
Better to just start off with one of those anime guitars really, they hold their value. The Kasumi one looks pretty neat.
Damn that's pretty slick. Nice and light too with a nitro finish. My only concern is there are few holes drilled in for the bridge. Only the holes for the strings to pass through, but that's probably all you'll need. You can drill the bridge holes yourself. As long as you get a nice neck, you'll have a sweet guitar. It's not as hard as you think. The most "difficult" part is setting up the action, intonation and truss rod level. But honestly you can take it to a tech and they'll sort that out for you. Or you can learn it yourself through youtube.
Benjamin Howard
Might as well do it and commit tele sacrilege all the way down
>strat neck >third pickup cutout >active pickups >killswitch >rout for a floyd?
Nathan Wood
Oh god >strat neck Maybe, the neck can fit a tele route. >third pickup cutout A Nashville tele perhaps would be neat. >active pickups Depending on what you wanna play sure. You'll need to route space for the battery >killswitch I'm back and forth on this. Other than cool Buckethead licks, what is it useful for? >rout for a floyd too much work for a first timer. A Tele bridge is already a thing of beaty.
Gabriel Brooks
Because it's a $30 guitar body and I just bought a harbor freight router
They make router templates and pre-drilled control plates for all of that :^)

I have a bass were the only thing that's not rusty or broken is the body and neck. How much would it cost to make it playable? What's the cheapest way to get everything that's missing? Not looking for a great sound (not even a good one lol), I just want it to be playable. Help
I was restringing my acoustic bass and when I was replacing the G string, I can't get the end pin to stay in. I've tried literally everything. Tried a different pin, holding it as I tune it, etc. I ended up putting a piece of gaff tape on it to secure it in place, but that's only a temporary fix.
Any advice on how to fix this? Seems like the hole in the bridge is worn to the point it won't grab the end pin anymore. Pic related is my bass
it'll probably be in good shape after a setup and new strings
unless the neck is warped
Landon Hall
I will later (probably on the next thread since these die so quickly). For starters the electronics are all rusty and the guy who gave it to me said both of the pickups are broken. Also the tuners are rusty and the bridge, appart from also being rusty, I think is deformed
Connor Wood
I had this old guitar once with a really picky pin, and it'd always pop out unless I installed the pin while pulling upwards and keeping a bit of tension on the string while inserting the pin. It'd always stay in if I installed it like that.
Bentley Ross
I tried everything to get this pin to stick in, believe me. I work at a local music store so I do setups on guitars and basses all the time, this is the first time I've had trouble on my bass. I'm thinking the hole where the pin goes is worn
Is really $250 the cheapest possible? I mean you can get crappy basses for less. I am assuming since I already have the body it should be even cheaper than the cheapest basses? From what guitar part can I cut money the easiest?
Jacob Cook
Well i assume the rusty tuners and bridge still work so open it up and rework the electronics with some soldering and it will probably work as is.
Angus young’s SG is disgusting from years of sweat corroding the hardware. He changes pick ups and that’s about it
Thomas Nguyen
A $250 bass uses cheap AF chinesium metal, which corrodes really fast. Nobody would ever buy any of this stuff stand alone because it comes on the cheapest bass already and most would want to upgrade the material after a failure.
You could email WMC and see if you can buy some of their chinesium parts and have it mailed. They might do it
