Didn't see any threads about this new album. What do you think?
Black Midi - Schlagenheim?
Actually great, basically as good as the Daughters album
Rehashed shit manufactured to appeal to Yea Forums people or people with similar taste.
polished and accessible noise rock for avant-teens
black drummer
Do you think this will be a gateway into lightning bolt and melt banana etc etc?
i liked it more than daughters but that's not to say that i enjoyed listening to it.
If he were still alive this would be Anthony Bourdain's favorite new band and he'd talk about them on CNN
Black drummer might have the most interesting input into the album. I really enjoy all the switch ups.
i agree, he's one of the best in the world tb h
maybe more like the fall but yeah, which isn't a bad thing. i liked the album too and i can see why a lot of people would like it. it's not your "typical" noise-rock album
Is nobody else completely put off by the singer. The problem I'm having is that he's literally creating a goofy voice that doesn't add anything to the music. It's nothing but distracting and I don't understand why everyone said "sweet sing like that on every song you do".
wait. hmmm upon n-th listen it seems a bit of a step down from the Daughter's album. still excellent though
western ruins the flow of the album
Fuck off. This is better.
that was the only good song...
It is not though. The goofy vocals fit the aesthetic but also severely limit the impact of the music
The voice turns me off, everything else is fine I don't find it mind blowing though
saviors of rock, along with Daughters
this
the singer is too pretentious to have a real personality shine through his singing, so he's trying to fabricate singers like David Thomas, David Byrne, etc.
just because these two are popular doesn't mean they're the only "noise rock" bands out there man, they're hardly the same genre
It's not about noise rock, it's about making new interesting rock music with enough pop sensibilities to make people interested
>pretentious
hollow criticism
fair enough but it's not like that music isn't out there, it's just being picked up by mainstream sources. noise, psychedelic, folk etc. there's new interesting shit out there people just aren't interested enough to search for it unless it's spoon fed to them (i.e. Daughters and Black Midi). not to say they're bad, just not the "saviors"
how? I didn't call the music pretentious, I called Georgie Greep's persona pretentious. If I was going to insult his singing ability that's another story
what is his "persona"? and what makes it "pretentious"?
OMG THEIR DRUMMER IS A KING, /r/indieheads DON'T WE ALL LOVE THIS BAND?!
what 2018/2019 albums would you recommend?
Reminder that complaining about vocal delivery in the rock format is normie-tier criticism, just a step up from classics such as "it's just noise" or "when does the song actually start???"
his persona is how he presents himself in interviews and in the context of their music (lyrics and delivery, mostly) which I find pretentious because of how self-important he acts. If you're going to say shit in interviews like "The idea was to do stuff that’s impossible to do live" when talking about recording your album, then make some pretty standard math rock with extremely standard production, you should back up that claim. I don't think he's done anything all that substantial. But then again, that's just subjective. if you don't agree it's all good
the new Girls Band album is probably going to slap, especially after hearing that last single they put out. The new Just Mustard songs were cool, shit most of the Dublin scene right now is killing it. The Sistertalk single from february was pretty cool too, and even though it's nothing too special the Beak> release from last summer is fun as hell. New street sects should be cool too (only reccing rock bc of the thread)
Yea Forums = Girl Band / Daughters
Reddit = Black Midi / Idles / Tropical Fuckstorm
Learn the difference
that doesn't make any sense, that's like saying the tone of the instruments in the jazz format is normie-tier criticism because it's about composition and mood. vocal delivery is a huge part of rock, especially when you're talking about front men specifically, what a weird claim to make
all modern bands are reddit
Fucking retard. When you can listen to a song and say "it would be better without the vocals" then the vocal delivery is trash. Listen to 953 and tell me it wouldn't be better without the vocals.
This band just feels....contrived to me.
Same with Parquet Courts
Can't deny I like some stuff by both bands but it seems like they're parroting other bands instead of being their own authentic thing. Gives me a dirty feel desu
lmao another tripfag confirmed retard
Parquet Courts is 10 times better. The singer in that band knows how to use his voice for instance. I can already see shit being built up for this band, they're gonna be very popular and you'll be called a plebeian for shitting on the singer even though he clearly is trying too hard to push this shitty weird unnatural voice on almost every song, regardless of whether it actually fits. Western is fine for instance, but 953 and Ducter are worse off with his weird vocals. Speedway is the best song and the singer for that one sounding more "generic" isn't a bad thing.
>Didn't see any threads about this new album
are you a fucking tard?
these are really good, thanks
ok. I stand by my opinion. To this day I have yet to put down an album because of vocals unless they are weird in the mix because of production issues or similar. In the particular case of this album, I can see why someone would not like them, but I think they are fine. Not very original, but just about right.
I don't want to hear huwhite men playing guitars in 2019.
Black midi isn’t reddit at all, I’m honestly baffled by the amount of plugging they’ve been getting considering their style. The only stance regarding your post I’ll take is agreeing that TFS and Idles are reddit, whatever you want to call Girl Band and Daughters, black midi would be the same thing more or less.
Okay, so yes I have been a total fan ever since I came across their kexp a few months ago, yes I have been extremely excited for this to release and I’ve done some deep binges through their live footage, listened to tons of similar bands all because their sound has totally torn my taste to shreds it’s absolutely addictive to me, it’s the louder than life riffs, the amazing drumming, the eccentric vocal performances, everything about black midi clicks with me in a way no band has in a long time.
So going into this I was really nervous, hows it gonna hold up to the blast of energy that was their kexp performance, how have the songs changed and what new cuts am I gonna hear? But to put it simply I’m amazed. Everytime I listen through this record new details emerge, it’s everything I loved about their kexp performance just more sketched out and with a good amount of studio flourishes and overdubs. The songs have evolved beautifully too in the studio environment. I’m consistently surprised and totally infatuated with this record and I’m so glad to see how much more attention black midi has gotten despite some bullshit claims by pitchfork and other blogs claiming it’s the savior of guitar music or something. Putting that type of claim on any band is kind of pointless anyway let alone a band that’s getting ready to release their debut. I can see why people tune in and are just reminded of some other vaguely noisey band that they do enjoy and pass it off as derivative.
I’m just excited to see how genres and sounds I’ve already enjoyed for years sent through the blender to produce this record. Even if you do criticize this record for wearing its influences on its sleeves the amount of talent and synchronicities between each band member is astounding. I swear everytime I listen I find a new favorite song but at the moment it’s western, of Schlagenhiem and speedway.
Easily my favorite album this year and will probably continue to stay that way.
BLack Drummi
I stumbled across Talking Heads when it came out and followed their shit so I would be there when a more full project dripped. I agree that as far as instrument based music in 2019 goes, this may be my favorite release. Drowse gets second place with Light Mirror, and then I'm still feeling Avery Tares Cows on Hourglass Pond. I listen to this band and I feel like they really fucked with Yes, Bloc Party, Interpol, Grizzly Bear, Guerilla Toss and a bunch of other favorites of mine, then put their spin on it.
Very obnoxious little album, I can't wait for Fantano to give it a 9 minimum
Damn, I miss my nigga Anthony like you wouldn’t believe
I smell you k0haraSingles
>polished and accessible noise rock for avant-teens
yeah thats how i felt too, its not jazzy enough for my tastes, its not noisy enough, and it sure as hell isnt that interesting.
>my favorites? This Heat, Slint, The Pop Group, The Gun Club, the list goes on...
def not as good as daughters.
There have been like 4 threads everyday since the album had been released and everyone's just calling them industry plants and shitting on the vocals. I love black midi tho. Fug the contrarians.
The vocals are literally the best part.
didn't think they were industry plants till now, thanks for letting me know to stay away from them
>2019
>this is what Yea Forums thinks is innovative
>everyone's calling them industry plants and shitting on the vocals
>I love black midi tho. Fug the contrarians.
>everyone
>contrarians
hm
post what YOU think is innovative, faggot
please, stop
Yes. What should I call you then? Pleb?
I'm dead serious.
this
Pleb.
and if I like black midi that makes you...?
The patrician chad.
>contrived as fuck
>no emotion whatsoever
>vocals are horrid
>inferior to their influences
>poorly produced
>actually pretty uninteresting take on usually interesting genres
literal trash that's only getting attention from plebs who don't know much about noise rock/post-punk because the insdustry is shoving it down their throats like crazy.
Saw them live and was blown away, love the albums. The singing doesn't bother me at all, I actually like it this way, makes you listen a bit more to it since it makes it stand out in the jam.
I can literally tell that industry people who work for black midi's label are in this thread right now defending their mediocre album
this, or stockholm syndrome
>love the albums
>I actually like it this way
blink twice if you're in danger
>>contrived as fuck
how?
>>no emotion whatsoever
very clearly emotion in the singing, are you autistic?
>>vocals are horrid
in your opinion
>>inferior to their influences
people are exaggerating how much influence they take from older bands and also not recognizing how well they combine the influences they do have
>>poorly produced
how?
>>actually pretty uninteresting take on usually interesting genres
it doesn't re-invent anything, sure, but it sure as hell stands out among their contemporaries.
Lul, I unironically like the music as it is. Boohoo me.
oh god here we go
>stockholm syndrome
You used that term twice this evening, did you just learn it?
Yeah. Rough Trade was looking for a really good shitposter and I get the job done. Stay mad wagecucks.
not an argument
i'm not the dude you were responding to buddy, just bracing myself
twice? do you think it's impossible for more than one person to use that term? as if only one person has seen king fucking kong you moron, it's not some abstract shit get off your high horse
you need to listen to more music. that is all
REVERBERATIONS OF A BELL'S SOUND
Why do people call this band a critic's band? the only reputable critics who have reviewed it so far are The Guardian which gave it a 3/5 and Punk Revolution now who ravaged them:
youtube.com
get rekt black midi, literally no one with taste likes you
bmbmbm is objectively ruined by shitty vocals how do you think this is a good idea
this is an actual quote from the rolling stone review:
>"On the mordantly swinging “Of Schlagenheim,” the album’s best all-out jam, Greep sings with pop-eyed intensity, turning his geeked up agitation into stand-up: “Sweat is running down my face/I wish it could be cold/So I could get a bottle full of it and sell it to the old.” If he did, it’d be top-shelf stuff stuff."
rock criticism is at an all time low
>dude listen to this literal who rock band with 300 listeners on soundcloud trust me this is the real good stuff
953 is a shit example, the vocals on that song arent even that crazy
where the fuck is black midi at any point channeling david byrne. are u legit stupid
autism vocals
They sound more like a David Thomas ripoff than anything, what with that very guttural, back of the throat feel to them.

i didn't say that you utter headass, read the post again carefully. I said he's trying to contrive a quirky voice LIKE those singers, but it comes off as disingenuous. what is reading comprehension
The vocals don't fit the song at all. The dude singing in DT, MI would've been a much better fit, you can't deny this.
IF NOT I'LL HAAVE TO MAAKE TUNTJNTTINTUNTUNTUNTTUNJUN
>Why do people call this band a critic's band?
Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, BIllboard, etc. all have already wrote big FEATURE pieces on them
we should consider pitchfork's review marketing by default, since they're simultaneously advertising for their Chicago festival over the summer
damni honestly felt like one of theyr performances were better on kexp
Black midi are industry plants
a dumb pleb, user
You are a contrarian
It honestly disgusts me that people are calling this shit "rock" music. This is a fucking disgrace, and really highlights how far rock as a genre has fallen. REAL Rock Music is AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, Guns and Roses, Led Zepplin, Aerosmith and INXS. This isn't rock, This is shit.
Honestly though, they named themselves Black Midi? Are you FUCKING kidding me? Fuck these guys, do they even have any idea what a BLACK MIDI is? It takes hours to compose Black Midi music and incredible hardware to even attempt playing it. These guys literally just have a fucking seizure on their guitar and call it a day, fucking no time is put into it at all, it lacks soul, just as the band lacks any fucking talent when it comes to naming themselves.
I am so fucking livid, I can't fucking take it anymore, people guarding these talentless hacks with the guise of it being "experimental" or "Avante-Garde" or even "Neo-Prog-Rock" or whatever the kids are calling it these days. If you like this kind of shit get your epileptic friend, give him your guitar and turn on the fucking strobe light, because you just created your very own Black Midi guitar solo.
The only member of the band with talent is the drummer, and he's black.
Another thing that really grinds my gears about this fucking god awful fucking band is that they used a mobile phone to play a sample through an electric guitar pickup, and this dude sits on his ass on his phone while the drummer does all the hard work. Fucking Millenials always on their fucking phones, even during a live performance.
In closing, I'd honestly rather listen to 21 pilots while watching the live-action Garfield movie because this is just fucking awful.
Fuck this band.
Fuck this album.

why is every black midi thread so bad lol
I only found out about it because I follow David Rudnick (the album art creator)
>lol
fuck off to reddit
