/jazz/

Just got up. Wanna get some jazz time in before I have to go see my case worker this afternoon and NA in the evening. Listening to pic related. I thought it was a sitar on this but I guess it must be a Tanpura. either way it's pretty cool. I agree it's probably not the best Sanders album but it's pretty chill and I'm enjoying it. How are you today? what albums you gonna listen to?

Glad to hear OP is in NA and still alive, didnt see you around for awhile and even tho ur blatant openness about ur drug usage was annoying I am very glad ur ok. Gonna listen to myself today
:( made a recording last weekend and im debating releasing or not and im going to hear some friends alto trio show tonight for their release party. Hope I have time to practice today. Anons AACM fred anderson and steve mccall record looks sick. Check out the eremite label for good fred anderson/kidd jordan stuff.

>How are you today?
Better than what I expected, honestly. Though I've a shitload of things coming up, I know for sure that the next few weeks are gonna get exponentially easier.

>what albums you gonna listen to?
I've been going through a Bobby Hutcherson phase, listened to most of his 60's discography while doing a lot of basic shit, like working out or doing the dishes.

Back from my appointment. I put this on, couldn't find a wikipedia article about it, but it's not regular Nation Time it's some boxset version of it that's 4 hours long. Anyway gonna be a wild ride. Really inspirational to me as a sax virgin to know this guy started playing at 30. My pops says we might get subway tonight which would be really great. We got it last night after years of going to Diangelos when Diangelos stopped having the two for one steak and cheese deal my dad always got, but apparently he was really impressed with the sandwich he got yesterday so he says we might do it again. I thought my sandwich was really good too so I am pleased.

bump

wholesome user

Thanks. It turns out though my mom is gonna make burgers instead. That's ok though. She just brought home a bunch of food and when they leave tomorrow I'm going to make myself pizza and burritos and tons of other shit all week. Sorry to spoil the wholesome with my gluttony. I'm gonna fast though when they get back. Can't wait for burgers now and to see my guitar playing Vietnam vet friend at NA later. This Joe McPhee albums is pretty cool.

>How are you today?

okay, I guess. have been a little depressed for the last few weeks because I badly sprained my wrist and haven't been able to work out, which is like the main thing I look forward too usually other than music. On the plus side, I quit my job working at a grocery store yesterday. Happy to be done with that, although It probably means I won't be seeing many people for the rest of the summer.

>What albums you gonna listen to?

this one (King of Kings by the Pyramids). Its Afro-jazz and it sounds really cool. Might listen to some of Cecil Taylor's stuff too because I have yet to hear much of him

Attached: R-3925373-1349446089-2739.jpeg.jpg (595x600, 117K)

also, does anyone know of any good books on jazz or autobiographies?

anyone know of any good jazz muscian autobriographies or books on jazz in general?

>what albums you gonna listen to?
this.

Attached: R-3925373-1349446089-2739.jpeg.jpg (595x600, 117K)

This album is hard to listen to because the random gibberish vocal parts are just so fucking stupid. What was the intention when they recorded this, did they think they were being funny or clever or something?

this live archival release came out recently, very solid performance

Attached: a0952593196_10.jpg (1200x1200, 287K)

>books on jazz in general
Free Jazz In Japan by Teruto Soejima is currently on my wishlist

Downloading it right now, Sam Rivers is one of my all time favs

by the way, if you have it on FLAC I'd appreciate a lot if you uploaded

nope, sorry, only listened to it on bandcamp

Miles autobiography is great, especially the stuff about other musicians. Since he's worked with every major name in Jazz, he has a lot of funny stories about others and their drug habits and personalities.

They knew that pseudo intellectual rock fans would eat it up because
>woah so random and trippy man. this shit is DEEP! Not like most jazz that all sounds the same just wanking on random notes.

yeah, i've been meaning to read that one for a while, but it's not on Kindle and I can't find a torrent either. Guess I'll have to order a copy on Amazon.

Just got back from NA. I didn't talk to people as much as I should have but oh well. Listening to pic related for the second time. really good stuff.

Just listened to this. I'm torturing myself looking at saxophones on craigslist that I can't buy. At the same time sort of scheming ways to get money for booze but knowing how much of a waste that would be.

Space Is The Place: The Lives And Times Of Sun Ra

if its that bad, mow lawns and do fucking anything for a month

I'm gonna get a job eventually. I have to and I have to move out. Listening to Smokin at the Half Note now/

sure BUT....do fucking anything get a saxophone and get to the next page and do it now fuck it.

Maybe you are right but idk if my parent would let me spend the money. They are kind of controlling my finances right now and would want me to save it to move out or pay them for the shit I owe like traffic tickets. Unless I can somehow earn it all cash in hand this week while they are away idk how I could do it. Perhaps I would be able to get a cheap clarinet though to tide me over.

and fucking do it. get your hands on the fucking dream and stop dreaming

a dream deferred explodes

Langston:

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up

like a raisin in the sun?

Or fester like a sore—

And then run?

Does it stink like rotten meat?

Or crust and sugar over—

like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags

like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

>Can you carry a tune? Is your time all right? Sing! If your voice has hardly any range, hardly any volume, shaky pitch, no body or bottom, no matter. If it quavers a bit and if you project a certain tarnished, boyish (not exactly adolescent, almost childish) pleading, you’ll make it. A certain kind of girl with strong maternal instincts but no one to mother will love you. You’ll make it. The way you make it may have little to do with music, but that happens all the time anyway

I have a recorder i found, i wanna learn some songs on it i can play for my parents when they get back. Any ideas of songs or resources online to learn recorder?

Going to check this out next. Haven’t posted in this thread yet. Listening to the new baroness, which is ok.

Ok, Sonny plays a guitar, but how is Pharoah Sanders "rockist"? Genuinely puzzled on this one.

scaruffi gave that one a 5/10. I dont know why though, sounds good.

I don't think Pharoah Sanders cared much about rock fans in particular. He was utilizing elements of African music in an effort to get in touch with what he perceived as his roots. It was all about getting in touch with African identity, which was an important aspect of African-American culture in the time immediately following segregation. I haven't listened much to "Village Of The Pharoahs," but the guy who does the yodeling and weird singing on "Karma" and some of Pharoah's other records from this time went and studied singing with Pygmies. Not exactly a rock and roll cross-over technique. Say what you will about rock fans that may have latched onto what he was doing, but Pharoah's intentions were pure. Not for all ears though.

Art Ensemble Of Chicago is crucial, especially "Phase One."

youtube core but me likey so okay

You dont understand. Ive been living very badly for a long time and if you saw everything i ate in the past 12 hours you would hate me too. Heck i just ate some cotton candy italian ice and im eating a two egg instant omlette

oh.
shit.
yeah, man fuckin a

heres a fun thing to do on the recorder
try compose a melody without finger flipping
that is, never play an interval that requires you to both lift and put down fingers at the same time

heres an example of such a thing
youtube.com/watch?v=tBB6rfFyk8o
