If this is what's considered a breath of fresh air in rock, maybe it should just stay dead.
Nerd shit. Dogrel is way cooler
Iceage already did that.
black drummer
>Iceage already did that
Oh wow now I love this album. So diverse.
Albums like this, Daughters', Tropical Fuck Storm's are unironically holding up rock music. Rock music is officially dead in regards to what it used to be though. Now the whole lot of rock music is basically a niche genre.
Same could be said about modern death and black metal scene
Okay? No one cares or ever has cared about those genres though, back to your containment thread, autist.
Lol
There were loads of good rock albums (broadly speaking) released just last year
those were niches since the beginning
Same with all genres. Music is dead because nobody experiments and gets popular.
Oh you're one of those people.
>he doesn't know that genres are marketable niches
Is everyone in this thread underaged or something?
What the fuck is with the end?
And what was Rough Trade thinking stepping into math rock? I don't mind subsidiary labels experimenting, but this has no chance in hell of selling.
If it does I'd be impressed.
Are you serious? With the fucking hype they have behind them? They're industry plants. Of course it's gonna fucking sell.
If that was the case then why did White Pony by Deftones struggle back in 2000? That shit was advertised so fucking heavily and sold poorly compared to what they expected.
It was good, but it wasn't popular. It wasn't viral enough.
This sound from this band is great... but it's also forgettable.
there was a time when rock/pop were more than a niche. they were the default of (popular) music
now the default is rap and rock/pop are a niche, with the exception of mainstream dance pop which still enjoys some predominance, in part thanks to its blend-ability with rap
Pop is still default.
>default is rap
No it isn't.
Rap is about as dead as rock.
Only black metal is pushing boundaries because it's not politically correct. Rap hasn't done that for decades.
It honestly disgusts me that people are calling this shit "rock" music. This is a fucking disgrace, and really highlights how far rock as a genre has fallen. REAL Rock Music is AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, Guns and Roses, Led Zepplin, Aerosmith and INXS. This isn't rock, This is shit.
Honestly though, they named themselves Black Midi? Are you FUCKING kidding me? Fuck these guys, do they even have any idea what a BLACK MIDI is? It takes hours to compose Black Midi music and incredible hardware to even attempt playing it. These guys literally just have a fucking seizure on their guitar and call it a day, fucking no time is put into it at all, it lacks soul, just as the band lacks any fucking talent when it comes to naming themselves.
I am so fucking livid, I can't fucking take it anymore, people guarding these talentless hacks with the guise of it being "experimental" or "Avante-Garde" or even "Neo-Prog-Rock" or whatever the kids are calling it these days. If you like this kind of shit get your epileptic friend, give him your guitar and turn on the fucking strobe light, because you just created your very own Black Midi guitar solo.
The only member of the band with talent is the drummer, and he's black.
Another thing that really grinds my gears about this fucking god awful fucking band is that they used a mobile phone to play a sample through an electric guitar pickup, and this dude sits on his ass on his phone while the drummer does all the hard work. Fucking Millenials always on their fucking phones, even during a live performance.
In closing, I'd honestly rather listen to 21 pilots while watching the live-action Garfield movie because this is just fucking awful.
Fuck this band.
Fuck this album.
1.34/57
Drummer score:
32/43.8
I also agree you can tell the drummer's black ay.
They just know rhythm best.
But I was waiting for interesting riffy guitars perhaps, but it is math rock and math rock doesn't really do that.
I don't see why it can't though. Add that riffy hook and it's great.
Alternatively, do a more dnb style bass.
The singer sounds odd. That's all I'm going to say about the singer.
There are 3 singers.
does anyone know anything else that sounds like the middle part of Western? It has a really nice sound
It's stolen.
What?
kek I thought it was just someone like Mike Patton with a massive range.
from whom then dumbass i don't give a shit about who copied who i just want to hear music that sounds nice you fucking people are so annoying. Nothing is original nothing is unique give me sounds that make me smile
Iceage isn't rock
Here you go.

that part sounds like talking heads
All of their good songs kind of sound like Makeshift Swahili by This Heat. Not a bad thing.
Listening to this on my way to college. It's good, it's real good, but I don't really think it's as groundbreaking as they're picturing it to be. I guess most people just don't know about This Heat or Slint (if you're tired of the comparison, well tough shit).
I'll follow their carreer for sure, and tho I don't dig them that much yet, that's more than I can say about most music this year.
Two of them are literally teenagers. They definitely wear their influences on their sleeve, but none the less it's impressive stuff and they're clearly very talented. Looking forward to watching them mature and gain their footing.
Nothing like Slint. Slint was barely about the broken rhythms and was more about abstract riffyness in a lot of their shit. Abstract, but catchy riffs is what this band needs though 2bh. That drummer is insane.
There are some very Slinty aspects. The clean guitar tones are very similar, also Ducter is a big example. Ducter definitely feels like they were going for a Good Morning, Captain vibe.
the drummer reminds me more of Don Cab than Slint- Britt was way more stop-start than black midi's drummer is
>Song has a slow build to a climax at the end, therefore it is LITERALLY EXACTLY LIKE GOOD MORNING CAPTAIN, a song that was itself not even remotely original
No need to be so hostile bud. Schlagenheim is my AOTY. You're deaf if you can't hear the similarity between the quiet clean guitar parts on Ducter and Slint. Come on man.
calm down, guy
Hey, sounding like Slint is not a bad thing, you know? No one will think less of you if you just accept it or cope.
you tried
way to feed the troll, pal
political correctness has nothing to do with quality/innovation
and being politically incorrect got tiresome like 15 years ago
Slint to me was an abstract grunge prog metal band. I can see why it made genres like math rock popular, but that genre is no longer the same as it was in the early 90's.
sure, champ
He wrote so much I gotta give him a (You) for the effort
I think Slint pushed the boundaries of post-hardcore, the same way Black Midi are doing with prog rock. Any half-decent band has their own sound, but that doesn't mean we have to come up with new genres for each one of 'em.

It's a pasta, bruv. Welcome to Yea Forums.
I'm tired of these poser comparisons. I'm a fan of Slint, and This Heat, but those are really arbitrary comparisons to black midi. They only sound "similar" on a very surface level. If you listen to the songwriting, and the details, you start to see where black midi transcend their influences.
tons of RYM posers are throwing out these vague comparisons and its exposing how limited their knowledge and how shallow their taste is.
Oh, so is that why they're censoring shit? Because it's boring?
Music should be controversial if it can be. Other times it's looking to a more objectively good sound or even a subjective interpretation of sound.
Good loud music and opinions are hard to find, so you need to look at extremes. PC is not only limiting opinion, it's limiting the stimulation of new and interesting sounds.
When Jazz came out, it was controversial for the ethnicity of players at the time. That tension developed the sound arguably.
The same is now occurring in some weird places now. Anti-PC or anarchist bands are pushing the edges again, because our society has become suffocating again. The fruit supply dried and we're in need of some rain, some inspiration.
>compare a band to other bands that actually sound alike and probably inspired it in the first place
>poser comparison
You're just mad your "obscure" bands are getting attention. Comparing Black Midi to similar bands is not reducing their sound to their influences. Chill the fuck out, bruv.
I don't think it sounds anything like slint. But I also don't think it's the nail on the head yet. Maybe they need time to stew with sound. Touring and listening to bands is a great way to do that.
they'll come round to it. Let's get excited for the next release.
The amount of bands that hit it the next album is very long indeed. Sometimes it's because it's a new band and the members haven't quite pushed each others sound in a direction that is interesting yet. That and the touring helps with getting feedback from the scene. It helps with learning what is a good sound as it provides ideas. Sometimes you'll get a lot of constructive feedback. You might be onto something, but you'll never know unless you get feedback.
Stop making me giggle.
True. They should meet Daughters and Polyphia.

proof the irish are the true saviors of rock
dude that was 20 years ago, the shape of pop music has altered so heavily. back then grunge was still on its way out and alt metal was coming in, now this is all so niche
not that sperglord you're replying too, but they're as similar to Slint as they are many other post-rock groups of the 90s and early 2000s
the biggest problem with that comparison is how their moods are so drastically different, like BM are trying very hard to force an atmosphere around a math rock groove while Slint created a song with a specific emotion in mind and the clunky abstract sound was a by-product
let's get ready, let's get set!
we're going on the,

Nice shitposting there "Aiyden" or whatever your faggot parents named you
>bands that have a lot of PR behind them are "industry plants"
that's a totally disingenuous use of the term and you know it.
>but I don't really think it's as groundbreaking as they're picturing it to be
the band have literally said in interviews that they're a very much a work-in-progress and that in two years they'll be unrecognisable to what they're like now. I still think its a good record but most cynical people shitting on it don't seem to realise that they're still just kids trying to find their footing. It's a shame really, Yea Forums is so riddled with envy that anytime a young, technically competent and moderately experimental band finds success they have to compulsively shit on it
the only reason they aren't industry plants is because they don't pretend to be completely independent. they're very open about their connections and their label's marketing team helping them achieve fame
true dat. Took some time before I stopped being bitter about absolutely everything, but I made it out of puberty. I wish Yea Forums could keep up.
this is the most boomer post i've read
