A lot of people think free jazz is just thirty minutes of random notes, but it does have disparate structures that form as you listen to it. listen to Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation, you’ll hear a structure of one man improvising, then another, then another, then all of them coming together, before they go back to improvising. I’d like it if they just had a long organized improvised rock album, with elements of prog and math rock. And of course, with certain moments where it’s planned out and they stop improvising and play coordinated stuff, which was done in traditional free jazz. That’s the big issue I have with attempts at complex/artsy rock music. Stuff like prog or Captain Beefheart sounds improvised, but it’s all planned out. And stuff like Twin Infinatives or The Parable of Arable Land are legitimately just random freak outs with no structure, with random notes and random banging
I also don’t like prog rock because it’s always goofy stuff about wizards and dragons and princesses. Maybe they should keep it instrumental
