I guess most old Memphis rappers were real since everyone was a drug dealer or a murderer in Memphis in the 90's.

To me, Hip Hop is turntables and samples of old soul and funk songs with power, aggression and I guess macho bravado in the lyrics and vocals. Not some skinny jean wearing dyed hair faggot rapping about his depression over some synthesised beat.

It disgusts me how genuine legends of the genre like N.W.A., Public Enemy, Nas, Wu Tang, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, etc. get slated so much on Yea Forums. It speaks volumes about this place that the shit XXXTenacion and that 6ix9ine faggot put out is better received than Illmatic.

There really needs to be a retro movement in Hip Hop with people putting out stuff that sounds akin to the classic era. It's worked in rock.

New rap is better than old rap my guy, I'm saying this as someone who raps and started out making boom bap before I started making trap rap. Old rap is so boring dude, no choruses, no vocal effects, just the same flow for 20 minutes with emphasis on writing. With new rap you can say "Hoes mad" 40 times and as long as it sounds good you have a song. It's so much more fun than boomer rap and you can take this opinion from someone who not only went through the hating rap phase but actively makes old and new rap.

I don't know much about that but they definitely do have a lot of ties to older rap groups and have stood the test of time. I still unironically listen to their music somewhat although I was a huge fan in high school and will still go to their concerts if they tour near my city.

Gimmick can be argued that they're clowns, literal clowns that make songs about the carnival and circuses. This spawned their own pseudo religion called the Dark Carnival which is basically just Christianity with extra macabre/clowny aspects and characters.

Musically, ICP is still old school rap, it's basic and lacking in any modern elements for the most part. They have autotuned here and there but it's a rarity and the most modern their music really gets is the rap metal craze of the late 90s, which by now is old school as heck
