I guess go listen to Hunky Dory since that came after TMWStW and is probably his first great album, though not nearly his best IMO. I got into him by listening in total chronological order from start to finish, but that took some patience with his first few albums. If you want maybe skip to Ziggy Stardust or Aladdin Sane since those are both consistently fantastic albums. I wouldn't go any farther than that without listening to what comes before, though. Diamond Dogs is where he starts to get a bit weird (in a good way) and I think it would be a shame to experience that without hearing what led to it.
