I'm tied between Burzum, Darkthrone, Mayhem and Bathory.

Burzum. I don’t think there’s a band that has meshed ambient and metal as well as Varg did on his classic albums
I prefer cheesier Black Metal myself, so I'll have to go with Carach Angren.
Batlord
for me? it's gotta be cradle of filth
>I don’t think there’s a band that has meshed ambient and metal as well as Varg did on his classic albums
Nah
If it comes down to making some really fucked up and evil ambient it is no contest between Grishnak and Holocausto
Gamma G aka Nuclear Holocausto DJ years aka "The Great Shaman" is the most ritualistic black metal ambient ever made after pic related.
why make black metal if you're just going to use death metal themes and lyrics?
BM was never about gore and shit
Is the guy on the cover okay?
It looked like it hurt. Hopefully that's just a good prop.
My top 5 are
1. Burzum
2. Darkthrone
3. Emperor
4. Dissection
5. Immortal
Don't worry, after this album released he moved to the Happy Farm in Maine, where all musicians go to jam out after they retire. He's with Kurt Cobain and Elvis.
thats a picture of Dead(lead vocalist of Mayhem) after he committed suicide
Gehenna (NOR)
why did he do it?
Hard to pick but probably Graveland. One of the few influential early 90s black metal bands that continues to release good music 20 years later. Of course the first few albums are absolute classics.

He had a lot of mental health issues, and was generally a pretty gloomy guy. He had a suicide note, but it didn't really explain his reasoning.
depression and obsession with death
Probably Furia, I can listen Martwa Polska Jesien all day.
first spell only good
Evilfeast
I love Burzum for so many reasons, but I'm to lazy to type essays.
Next to Varg I rate Ulver, Celtic Frost, Darkthrone, Bathory and Negura Bunget.
Might look like an entry level list, but I can't listen to 2000 demo albums from underground Scandinavian bands when there's so much prog and krautrock out there.
It's gotta be Burzum, Xasthur I think is the best at atmospheric black metal but he's just not very consistent
