No I don’t, you stupid fucking faggot. I just want every era of rock represented. You have fifty fucking 80s albums and every other decade is painfully underrepresented. You also spend too much time on micro genres of punk and metal, and ignore giant movements that actually influenced things. If I knew nothing about rock, and I just listened to your rock chart in order, I’d have no idea how huge folk rock or prog rock were, but I’d know the difference between grindcore and cybergrind. Not to mention the major artists and releases completely glossed over. Where’s Elvis Presley? Where’s Bob Dylan? Where’s The Who? Where’s Pet Sounds? Where’s Sgt Pepper? I’d be fine if you were intentionally ignoring big artists/releases to focus on underground stuff, but you don’t do that either. You just make odd choices that don’t work.
Yet every fucking time I explain this to you, you only focus on my era criticism and just respond with
>durr you want it to just be 50s albums? I don’t understand
Eat shit you dumb fucking retard, just admit you don’t know anything about rock music. I always explain my point completely, and you always ignore it. The rock section sucks ass, I originally thought it was just an accident. Now I guess you have for some reason decided intentionally to make a chart with a terrible rock section. Why? I don’t know

What?
Because structuring by eras doesn't make sense, it's completely arbitrary. Structuring by genres on the other hand makes much more sense.
>You spend too much time on micro genres of punk and metal, and ignore giant movements that actually influenced things
Such as?
>folk rock and prog rock
Both are already included you retard.
>Elvis
There is already a rock & roll album.
>Bob Dylan
There is already a folk rock album.
>The Who
There is already a garage/hard rock album.
>Pet Sounds
There is already a baroque pop album.
>Sgt Peppers
There is already a psychedelic rock album.
I'm including one album per genre, and each genre choice is decided by an early representative of the genre. None of the choices are obscure. For psychedelic rock, 13th Floor Elevators are more relevant than Sgt Peppers, but you wouldn't know because you are a Rolling Stone magazine fanboy or something.
I critize your era criticism because it's completely arbitrary, unlike genres, which describe musical diversity in a much better way.
I know more about rock music than you ever will, so stop saying stupid shit.
Look, o already told you, if you want me to ADD something, you must also tell me what to REMOVE. And you have NEVER been able to specific what to remove to add the stuff you want me to add (which is mostly redundant anyways).

Genre is much more arbitrary than era. Especially when it comes to metal genres
>Such as?

>There is already a psychedelic rock album.
Did I say psychedelic rock you faggot? No, I said Sgt Peppers
>I'm including one album per genre, and each genre choice is decided by an early representative of the genre.
And that’s a shitty way to organize a list on the history of music
>None of the choices are obscure.
That’s what I said you dumb retard. I said “I’d be fine if you were intentionally ignoring big artists/releases to focus on underground stuff, but you don’t do that either. You just make odd choices that don’t work.” I’d actually prefer it if you only went for the obscure instead of what you did
>For psychedelic rock, 13th Floor Elevators are more relevant than Sgt Peppers, but you wouldn't know because you are a Rolling Stone magazine fanboy or something.
Do you seriously think nobody liked Sgt Pepper before Rolling Stone magazine you fucking retard? Mister rock historian, nobody liked Sgt Pepper before Rolling Stone Magazine?
1/
>So your structure for the classical section is bad?
The classical section is structured by genres, which is why some baroque stuff on the chart predates some of the renaissance stuff from the chart. Also, not all eras have the same length. Medieval classical existed for a millennium, while the classical period lasted for only 75 years.
>Genre is much more arbitrary than era. Especially when it comes to metal genres
No, because we are measuring stylistic diversity, and genres define styles.
>Listing 20 subgenres of metal while representing all of prog rock as one album by The Nice
There are SEVEN (7) progressive rock recordings on that chart, which is okay. Also, progressive rock is my favorite genre, in case you didn't know. It's okay for metal to have 20 recordings as well, why wouldn't it? I mean, black metal has around a dozen sub-genres, yet I only included two black metal albums.
>And underrepresented you stupid fucking faggot
One recording per genre is enough. That's how it's done for almost every genre on the chart.
>I critize your era criticism because it's completely arbitrary, unlike genres, which describe musical diversity in a much better way.
Genres are much more arbitrary than eras. Genres just mean “somebody gave a name to this group of sounds,” and some genres are very broad while others are very specific. For instance, Pink Floyd and King Crimson sound very different, but because they are both “prog rock” you just ignore both of them. On the other hand, sludge metal and stones metal sound very similar, but because they’re “different genres” you need to represent both of them. See how arbitrary it is? What if I told you the Byrds was “light folk rock” and Bob Dylan’s electric albums were “dark folk rock”? Now they’re different genres, and you have to represent both
>I know more about rock music than you ever will, so stop saying stupid shit.
I’d have to know a negative amount of rock music for that to be true
>Look, o already told you, if you want me to ADD something, you must also tell me what to REMOVE. And you have NEVER been able to specific what to remove to add the stuff you want me to add (which is mostly redundant anyways).
Remove your shitty genre based chart, add a good era based chart, starting in the 50s
>Did I say rock & roll you faggot? No, I said Elvis
Why Bob Dylan instead of Wynone Harris (who directly influenced Elvis by the way)
>Did I say folk rock you faggot? No, I said Bob Dylan
Why Bob Dylan when Byrds already had an album full of folk rock tracks, while Dylan's first folk rock recording had less than half of them as folk rock?
>Did I say garage/hard rock you faggot? No, I said The Who
Why add The Who when there are already garage and hard rock?
>Did I say baroque pop you faggot? No, I said Pet Sounds
Why add Pet Sounds when there is already Beach Boys Today?
>Did I say psychedelic rock you faggot? No, I said Sgt Peppers
Why add Sgt Peppers when there is already 13th Floor Elevators?
>And that’s a shitty way to organize a list on the history of music
And what's your alternative again?
>You just make odd choices that don’t work.
Of course they work. The criteria for the chart is early representatives for each genre, as this gives you a good overview on the history and evolution of music.
>Do you seriously think nobody liked Sgt Pepper before Rolling Stone magazine you fucking retard?
That's not what I'm implying you moron. I'm implying your choices in general come like they are from some RSM fanboy.
>nobody liked Sgt Pepper before Rolling Stone Magazine?
Of course a lot of them did. My point is there is no need to have Sgt Peppers when there is already 13th Floor Elevators.
Look, we both want the chart to be as good as possible, right? You do know that I'm not opposed to adding Elvis, Dylan, Sgt Peppers, and so on on principle, right? You do know the reason I don't add them is because of space restrictions, right? Well, if you agree to all of those, you will realize that to ADD something, I must REMOVE something. So tell me, what should I remove to add whatever it is that you want me to add. And don't go with vague statements like "hurr, do this with eras", no. Tell me which album you want to add, and which album will get removed to add it. If you can do that, we can move forwards and end up with a chart that will be more of our liking. Trust me, I do value your suggestions, but there is only so much you can do with such a restricted space.
It's up to you if you want the chart to improve closer to your liking. Like I said, I'm not opposed to any of your choices per se, we just need to find a way to add them first (and that's the real puzzle).
Roll
>somebody gave a name to this group of sounds
Yes, but they are a starting point to quantify the diversity of styles in music. It's our basic unit structure, as good or bad as it is. That's how art is, it's fuzzy with unclear boundaries.
>some genres are very broad while others are very specific
That's right, which is why I tried to include the broadest genres instead of more specific ones. Let me remind you that out of a list of 1500 genres, 500 genres couldn't even make it to the chart. The ones that did make it to the chart are the ones that I believe were more diverse, so that the chart could capture as much diversity as possible.
>Pink Floyd and King Crimson sound very different, but because they are both “prog rock” you just ignore both of them.
And you think I wouldn't like to include both of them? Yes, some genres are very broad, but I can't include five recordings per broad genre, it's just too much and would leave out so many other very important genres. Again, this is why I tell you the add/remove thing. Easier said than done.
>sludge metal and stones metal sound very similar, but because they’re “different genres” you need to represent both of them
I understand, and I agree with you. Ideally the genre should have had three spots, but because of the way the chart is divided (in groups of 5), I just had no choice but to go with 5 doom/sludge/etc recordings. I do think you are underrating the diversity of the genre however. Witchfinder General sounds nothing like Kayo Dot, and yet are both part of the doom metal family tree.
>Now they’re different genres, and you have to represent both
They are only different genres (for the purposes of the chart) if both are considered to be different genres on RYM (since it's based on consensus). If RYM makes a "dark folk genre rock", then sure, I might add it, but they haven't. Side note: there is actually a dark folk genre, but that's not under rock, it's under contemporary folk.
...
>Remove your shitty genre based chart, add a good era based chart, starting in the 50s
No way. The chart is measuring stylistic diversity. Decades don't measure stylistic diversity. Unless each decade has equal stylistic diversity (which isn't true at all), then that can't be the case. Even then, I already showed you in another thread that the proportion of releases per decade wasn't that unequal.
Again, the strategy you need to get what you want me to add to the chart is simple
1) tell me what you want to add
2) tell me what you want to remove to add the recording above
If you tell me that, we can move forwards. I'm honestly very open to your suggestions if you structure them this way, otherwise we are just dealing with vague generalities.
>Why Bob Dylan instead of Wynone Harris (who directly influenced Elvis by the way)
Because Bob Dylan is more influential
>Why Bob Dylan when Byrds already had an album full of folk rock tracks, while Dylan's first folk rock recording had less than half of them as folk rock?
You should have both
>Why add The Who when there are already garage and hard rock?
Because The Who are very influential
>Why add Pet Sounds when there is already Beach Boys Today?
Because Pet Sounds is more influential
>Why add Sgt Peppers when there is already 13th Floor Elevators?
>And what's your alternative again?
Do you have goldfish memory? I say something, you respond to it, I say something else, you forget what I said earlier. Eras! Organize it by era! Start in the 50s, then the 60s, then the 70s, then the 80s, then the 90s, then the 00s, then the 10s. I’ve said this over and over. Genres are arbitrary, the march of time is not
>Of course they work. The criteria for the chart is early representatives for each genre, as this gives you a good overview on the history and evolution of music.
Here’s a fun fact for you: the earliest usage of the phrase “post rock” was a journalist in 1967 describing Sgt Pepper. It’s true! Look it up! That makes sense to me, as I think genres are arbitrary terms for collections of sound, and of course definitions change over time. According to your retarded logic though, Sgt Pepper is the first post-rock album, and you should use it as your example of the entire post-rock genre. Fucking retard
>Even then, I already showed you in another thread that the proportion of releases per decade wasn't that unequal.
What
>2 fifties albums
>21 sixties albums
>16 seventies albums
>42 eighties albums
>15 nineties albums
>4 two thousand albums
>0 twenty-tens albums
>equal
>Because Bob Dylan is more influential
I'm guessing we both meant Elvis here, but in that case since Harris influenced Elvis, and Elvins influenced others, Harris was more influential than Elvis.
>You should have both
I can't add both.
>Because The Who are very influential
The Wailers were very influential too.
>Because Pet Sounds is more influential
Beach Boys Today did the same as Pet Sounds and earlier, therefore that's more influential.
>Eras! Organize it by era!
But I already told you why I can't organize by era. None of the categories are organized by eras, so why should rock be the exception?
>Genres are arbitrary, the march of time is not
The chart attempts to display stylistic diversity. Eras are arbitrary to this approach, while genres are not.
>the earliest usage of the phrase “post rock” was a journalist in 1967 describing Sgt Pepper
Sure, but that's not what the term post-rock means as a genre.
>Sgt Pepper is the first post-rock album
But it isn't because it sounds nothing like post-rock.
You might as well claim I should add Steppenwolf under metal, or this one shitty garage band I can't remember that got first labeled as punk rock in 1964. Let's have a pinch of common sense first, shall we?
>equal
Yeah, well, the 50s wasn't a very diverse decade when it came to music, and by the 00s and 10s rock was becoming less and less popular with not a lot of new genres emerging. That's why going by eras is a bad idea, because it doesn't represent stylistic diversity accurately.
And I insist, you STILL haven't told me what to REMOVE to ADD what you want me to add. If you don't do it I can't make any changes and you are just complaining without offering any solutions. It's up to you to make this chart better. I have had many other users complain about the chart before, I listened to their suggestions, and we ended up in good terms with both of us happy with the changes, but you remain stubborn unlike them. Up. To. You.
