hard rock

kinda

How exactly?

Their early stuff was pretty heavy for its time, but I wouldn’t exactly call it metal. I’d consider it they heavier end of hard rock

hard rock

proto-hair metal

Early on, for their time they would easily be considered American heavy metal, as all long haired loud higher energy guitar bands were, really they're more of a hard rock band.

Rock band, not really metal.

they're a rock band that influenced most, if not all glam metal bands of the 80's (who themselves were arguably more rock than metal)

man this song is the SHIT

hard rock

LOL no
it's not even hard rock, it's pop with guitar solos

pop doesn't have DEM RIFFS

Definitely helped metal but not metal at all. Just made it look gay, but still good music

For me they are more Rolling Stones thing because metallists wouldn't cover Roy Orbison or Tom Waits. And also their attitude and stage show was too funny for metal

Zoomer/poseur, is what I smell

Panama called, it tells you to go fuck yourself.

When Sammy came it became this

David Lee Roth always referred to it as "big rock" which I think is appropriate. Van Halen kind of exist in a genre all their own. They may have given LA metal it's look in the 80s but you really couldn't put VH in the same genre as say, Ratt and Dokken, or even Sabbath and Priest. I unironically think they are the most important American rock band of all time.

This. Their very first single was a Kinks cover. Another cut from the debut - Ice Cream Man - is straight up 12-bar blues. I guess some of their individual songs could be considered metal, but not really the band as a whole.

They're textbook dadrock.

They're definitely the most important one of the late 70's. The whole shredder trend of the 80's began basically because of EVH.

That would be Michael Jackson - Beat It.

they heavily influenced a lot of metal bands but no
kind of like deep purple
i'd argue some songs are but not enough to define the band
