How do people actually like Opeth? It infuriates me to listen to any of their albums because theres literally no riffs and has regular rock band drumming.

I dig them because of Mikkael's vocals and his sick solos, also because I like the melodies and the atmosphere they create. Their first two albums are real sloppy when it comes to progressions and a good portion of them don't really make sense, but stuff like MAYH and Still Life are pretty good and display their progress. But yeah, they don't riff at all and everything they made after Still Life varies from mediocre to total garbage.

I always considered opeth a riff salad. How would one not consider them as such? Not trolling, curious. I get why people dont like them but they are one of my all-time favorites, up to and including ghost reveries

Riff salad? They're riffless in a sense that all of their riffs are generic as fuck and none of them truly standout. The term riff salad is usually applied to bands such as Dark Angel or MA that are loaded with bitching riffs, not to bands like Opeth.

You're certainly taking a gamble by downloading mp3, but the odds are very high that there'll be no actual difference
In some mp3s you'll get cymbals that sound crunchy, it's rare and that's pretty much the full extent of the effect

I try to download all my albums in 320 kbps mp3 format. There's definitely a "cleaner" sound to it.
FLAC should be used for archiving.

I've used both FLAC and MP3 and personally can't hear the difference

It is definitely a subtle difference, but noticeable when used high end systems in my opinion.

and when I compare it to FLAC version which is basically lossless compression: I can hear subtle difference, especially in the more subtle reverb type of stuff. The difference is minor and subtle, but it is something that I can definitely notice without imagining things.

Now that it has been disbanded for years I have my own atmo black project in vein of old Summoning, Caladan Brood (you get the deal) I am just overwhelmed how much it fucking sucks to record all on your own

Back in the day we would just rehearse our own parts respectively, go to studio and be done with it. This is just way too much to play all the instruments, program the drums, mix, master, play the synths.. you get the deal.

It's too slow this way. Would at least need some another guy like Summoning, this takes way too much time alone

well, its boring, poorly-overproduced, and overall generic sounding. so you could be thinking of any thing

I wouldn't say it's objectively better to play alone, but I've found it a lot easier to write interesting shit alone. The exception is drums, unless you're a drummer it's incredibly difficult to program beats that are up to par. You get used to it, but it's still a bit of a slog.

I would finish song to like 80%, but some parts needed some chiseling, I would send it to another guitarist who would make the different part work and the song was like 95% finished

When the songs got close to that 95-98% mark we would enter studio. Usually the song was 100% when we listened the producer/recorders opinion and make slight changes how we had rehearsed it...

I can make record good sounding instruments, using Superior Drummer for my drum beats for the moment: real problem is making good sounding mixes and mastering.

I personally would consider that learning to play some instrument perfectly ( or at least better than average ) is 10x easier than to produce good sounding mixes or final, mastered products.

Opeth have to be one of the least proggiest 'prog' bands I've ever heard. It's just idea hacked onto idea with nothing interesting to be found anywhere. Nothing musically intriguing or worth coming back to. Mikael uses some nice tonalities but my god their rhythm section is so banal. It's easy to see why they attract shitforbrain neckbeards who enjoy appearing to be cultured.
