It's probably because most girls in bands aren't the leaders or one of the leaders, which is ugually the vocalist or lead guitar guys.
But it's strange, since bass requires more strenght on the grip, and bigger hands are very helpful. I guess girls just do their best, despite guitar being much easier for them.

My best guess would be because teens look up to people they relate to so some teen girl sees a badass lady playing bass they think “hey, I could probably do that too.” Same reason so many groups of dudes started bands after The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, and The Who got huge in the 60’s.
Lots more women started playing bass in the 90’s cause Kim Deal, Kim Gordon, D’arcy Wretzky, and Gail Ann Dorsey.
