The Queen is Dead is brilliant, but honestly it's an album better approached over time. Come back to a song like I Know It's Over when you experience heartbreak, or There Is a Light when you feel crippling loneliness. This album gets a lot right, but you really have to be in the right emotional state to get most of it.

That or The Smiths really aren't your thing, and that's fine too. They're pretty unique even compared to their contemporaries in post-punk.

Actual pleb opinion, Hatful of Hollow was just a hatful of more hollow versions of S/t songs with some solid tracks which are also on other albums which have better songs as well, all of the versions of S/t's tracks are objectively worse, Yea Forums needs to fuck off with this rushed watered down compilation

The production on s/t is actually objectively botched. Anyone who thinks the original tracks are better either doesn't have working ears or is trying very hard to be contrarian.

Exactly, the Hatful versions were intentionally watered down and, hollow, so they could sell more copies and get the band to higher popularity due to Rough Trade not making enough copies of the S/t and The Thompson Twins beating them to number 2 on the charts, and all this caused us to get musically terrible and boring singles like Ask and Panic and Shoplifters, while actually quality songs like Still Ill, This Charming Man and Hand In Glove are pushed aside despite Johnny Marr and Morrissey's wishes for those to be popular and poppy singles, the S/t is a more cohesive and a bigger cult classic than Hatful, and your opinion is ignorant

Yes I'm aware it's a compilation. The debut's production has always sounded too thin and suffocates some of the best songs. You may not like the Hatful versions but the production gives s/t songs room to breathe. Also, meat is murder and the queen is dead are joint best.

This. Went from my least favorite to my favorite Smiths album. Strangeways is hot garbage though.

It's just a very catchy set of songs. If flashiness is what you're looking for, or if the note/sound choices made by the band don't fit your take on catchy, it won't be your thing.

They don't, they just jump at a bandwagon when someone seems to be even remotely right wing. Morrissey had the Britain First controversy few weeks ago and the number of Morrissey/Smiths threads skyrocketed literally overnight. Really makes you think.

couldn't stand Smiths fans in college so I avoided this for years and years. finally listened to it last year. listened to it about 10x in a row. Johnny Marr is amazing and it's a great album.

No one is arguing about Hatful being a better or worse album than st. The claim is simply that the versions of st songs on Hatful are better, and they objectively are. Even non audiophiles can tell how much better the production is and any claim to the contrary is contrarianism.

Because again the argument has nothing to do with which album is better, just which version of st’s tracks are better. A compilation wont be held or judged in the same light as a single artistic statement like a full album.
