>used to make music years ago >no theory knowledge but I could achieve good results by ear >don't make music for a few years >try again today and everything is good except the chords are worse than before I started making music >mfw I forgot how to harmony What do I do? Should I just cheat and use a plugin that makes chords for me?
use 'riff machine' or some chord generator if you can't come up with chords on the fly or... simply buy a mini keyboard.
Michael Howard
The record scratching is too much. Like if you are going to do that, only do it once.
Carter Johnson
I wish my father like many other fathers bought me an entire guitar rig and perhaps a drumset and bass for my other friends to try making a band when I was young, a lot of parents actually do this because they want their sons to have what they never had or at least want them to try... That looks like a cool dad, my father went for a pack of cigarettes and never came back.
Anyway, I'd end up doing something like My Chemical Romance so I'm glad he went away.
Luke Hughes
theory is a meme. just understand scales and experiment interesting chords progressions from there.
Caleb Morales
Sammy, did your computer work? What happened to the stream? It suddenly disconnected and we didn't hear anything from you.
I'll try that, but I don't want to have to rely on a tool. Being able to make my own music is much better.
That's what I did, and it was fine, but now I can't anymore for some reason.
Luke Sanders
Yeah, get Cthulhu and download preset packs that have chords grouped by scale. several packs are out there
Isaac Howard
I'll try that, but I don't want to have to rely on a tool. Being able to make my own music is much better.
Isn't there a way to learn how to make chords in a piano roll?
Joshua Mitchell
The basic idea is you use every other note in your key ascending from your root note. That'll get you triads, 7ths, 9ths, and 11ths.
Justin Wood
I know that, but they suck and are too basic. I used to make much better chords (they weren't good, let me be clear, but compared to now it's night and day) by just placing notes on the piano roll and altering the spaces until they sounded good and had the sound I was looking for. Somehow now I can't do that anymore.
Hunter Ross
literally everyone deals with this user just keep trying
Aiden Baker
But how did I not have to deal with it when I was new?
Daniel Collins
how to make disturbing industrial noise stuff
Hunter Brooks
i havent had the same creative energy the whole time either
Jack Perry
Either you were lucky or not as critical of your work.
Isaac King
try and fail for 5 years
Benjamin Bennett
>Either you were lucky I made more than 20 songs before the hiatus and I never had problems.
>not as critical of your work Even listening to them now they're still much better than what I make now.
I think the reason is that I haven't listened much to music during this time, so I guess my musicality suffered a bit. If that's the case then listening to a lot of music should be the cure, but isn't there another way to improve that you guys know of?
Owen Lee
Someone post a good beat and I'll spit something over it for later in the day
Ryan Nelson
>instaud.io/3MSR (not him, by the way -- I just got done listening to his clips are they're pretty bare for you to spit on)
the progression of the track kinda snuck up on me, real subtle. well done
Grayson Powell
how do you guys remove drums from samples? I usually just try to EQ it right and throw on some effects to make it sound like a noise kinda thing, but I feel like there's better ways of going about this.
Ethan Stewart
Are you trying to do the Dreams remix?
Connor Stewart
no, what's that?
Noah Nguyen
/prod/ tried a remix contest some time ago, and the randomly selected song was Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, which had insane bleed in its stems, making them very hard to use.
Sounds cool. If you're looking for stuff to improved try adding some more variety to that top line. Maybe like some stepwise passing tones emphasizing where the harmony changes. I think the second half of the phrase needs something more than the first.
Angel Lopez
>more variety to that top line thanks man definitely gonna do that, a few things are still straight looped 8(
Daniel Long
I'm still working on my Dream remix. Got a loop running as we speak. Maybe I'll have something worthwhile in a month ;_:
I'm still procrastinating on mine too lmao. Maybe I'll have something worthwhile in a year.
Ryder Myers
If you don’t understand the concept of chords now, you never really understood them in the first place.
Lucas Wood
What do you mean?
Samuel Murphy
just think stacked notes thats all you need to know
James Hall
I know what chords are. I just can't make them as well as I used to.
Dominic Ross
Also now that I think of it, my rhythms have also worsened, but I've always had problems with that, so I'm not sure.
Robert Lewis
>just think stacked notes thats all you need to know Eh, kinda. To be completely correct they have to be 4 or more notes stacked on top of each other with three or four spaces inbetween like this.
God I hate French schizo retard boomers. They don't want to embrace metal yet they don't want to embrace electronic music. They're stuck in their bubble of Dad rock+French Chanson. Which I am not intruding. They're cool genres but French Boomers think they're special for liking them. which is not the truth. I'm a zommerfag and I like all genres, doesn't make me deep though.
Anybody know how I can improve this in terms of production and rapping? I'm still developing my voice and don't usually do anything as hard as drill more like r&b and trapsoul. I was thinking of doubling the vocals so it's like a chorus
Elijah Morales
lol i like it, double vocals might sound cool, you should go even harder, fucking scream that shit
Dominic Torres
an user gave me the idea to synthesize the sound of coins hitting something a few weeks ago(?) when i was v :((((
>I think the reason is that I haven't listened much to music during this time, so I guess my musicality suffered a bit. >If that's the case then listening to a lot of music should be the cure, but isn't there another way to improve that you guys know of? Sounds like you were basically training your ears. I know my ear training goes to shit if I don't practice. Try doing actual ear training teoria.com/en/exercises/
Anthony Wood
Nice, thank you very much. Which ones are most useful for my situation?
Yh i probably aint gonna do much with the beat would be better if your more on beat but do what you want with it
Asher Flores
the low pass is excessive. also work on the levels, nothing “pops” and the track feels dull as a result
Noah Lopez
>try to make a house track >it sounds like hip-hop what the fuck?! Very nice. But those are coins in a fairly tight bag and taste like salty milk. Now how about some coins that are free to bounce around after they hit something?
I stayed up all night making this, I'm pretty fuckin proud of it. I took an entirely different approach to this track than I have any other, I'd like to hear your thoughts on it, feedback, what do you hear in it?
Joshua Bailey
What does /prod/ like to drink?
My favourite is fruit juice with street dust. Can't get enough of it and I often stop in the middle of my activities just to get some of it.
>what do you hear in it? pure $0Y but regardless of my tastes it doesn't sound bad
Ethan Morgan
compress it and post again
Connor Perry
That's not actually %100 legit street dust you can find good and quality street dust in other places, I've taste the difference with common dusty electronics and the taste is way different from a pure %100 dirt dust that actually arises from the rural areas or places with no pavement, the taste is a total different thing and the juice you can say gets fermented in a better way producing full bodied juice, persistent, rich and warm by test, in presence of tannins. I love how it dries your mouth but gives that leaves it with the ability to drink twice as much and satisfied.
Aaron Anderson
>MXL 990 I think two anons recommended these mics a thread or two ago -- are they good for recording drums and saxophone? I see that they're on sale for $70 and I might pick up two because someone on 4channel told me to. Currently only have an SM57.
i love the 12-tone system and will probably spend the rest of my life using it but my idea was to try arrange some bach fugue and chorales so that every single interval is in tune to the harmonic series
Josiah Miller
if you showed me this 10 years ago I would've been like "this is fucking shit" I get it now, but it just seems masturbatory
Sebastian Davis
The chip-tune style pluck feels a bit out of place imo, maybe add some more release to the ADSR or turn it down a wee bit
Luke Lewis
I have a two big suggestions:
Make the bass change up with each chord changeup on the scratches, also, reduce the release on the bass just ever so slightly, and also change up the rhythm of the scratches slightly with each pass.
It's pretty nice though, I like the idea behind it.
Lincoln Stewart
what the fuck is this holy shit
James Barnes
Ableton is off 25% currently. No excuse not to get the best DAW for electronic music.
Cameron Robinson
>the best DAW for electronic music. That's strange. I didn't see you mention Renoise in your post.
Nothing in there that wouldn't rot away with the other gigabytes of samples you never use
Joshua Ramirez
I've been trying to hunt down the source of a strange noise in my recording chain. Google has not been much help. Recently got a new computer and so setting up everything anew. Every couple minutes I get a super high pitched noise come through my monitors. Adjusting buffer size does not seem to affect the noise. Have not had something like this happen before on previous computers.
Connor Murphy
I should add that I am using Reaper with a ur44.
Wyatt Anderson
You can't, don't try
Asher Cooper
Obviously your drums are fucked. They're too quiet, too samey and there's no lows. Try varying aspects of the same drum / slice, use glitch 2 vst. You need a fairly consistent loud kick too, look into referencing with magic ab. I see what you're going for, a kind of Vordhosbn, so you need to really study that including the balances, look at it through an EQ, but also each drums. I would put that track in your DAW and slow the tempo down to see wtf's going on.
Gabriel Foster
Is it a sort of square wavey sound? If so, go through and start unplugging stuff at the wall and just repeat the process until you've found out what it is. I had a similar thing recently and it only stopped after I unplugged all the crap I wasn't using. How overloaded are your wall sockets?
Brody Nelson
>tfw finished a song >can't think of a name for it
I've finished it but I haven't recorded it. I write all my songs in guitar pro before I record.
Jason Garcia
I definitely have a lot of stuff plugged in, though on seperate outlets (same house circuit though). I suppose i just gotta go piece by piece unfortunately.
Thanks
Nicholas Evans
More of a shrieking feedback sound but very brief and intermittent.
John Sanchez
I once had a light saber type sound that was caused by a baby monitor in the neighbors house emitting RF that were being picked up by monitors. Hopefully its not something like that.
Pretty new to producing. Started 2 months ago with Audacity, now 1 month of learning to use Reaper. How does it sound production wise?
I don't even know should beginner like me even try to produce anything orchestral or should I have just have started with something easier with less tracks and just learn actual mixing and perhaps mastering
What you guys think? Is this some bullshit product, I am seriously considering getting a one
aliexpress.com/i/32776427185.html >According to A coustic Revive scientific theory and experiments, Schumann wave (7.83HZ frequency) can reduce the interference of radio and electromagnetic waves, thereby enhancing the details of the music, enhance the S / N, reduce the standing wave. But also can have a positive video upgrade (vividness and contrast), and people will be affected by the impact of Schumann wave can effectively relax, better listen to the details of the sound.
Nicholas Powell
>preset packs that have chords grouped by scale Not him but I'm not finding anything. All I find are EDM genre-based ones.
Connor Collins
I was more curious as to what an "emo sample" would be... like, are they lines from movies? But for sure, I have gigs of samples that I never use.
Yay, I have been meme'd! That's perfect; my lanky ass even has a giraffe neck. ...but seriously, use the keyboard. How can people stand clicking around on a piano roll or typing notes into a tracker? It makes my skin crawl. >cdn.mos.musicradar.com/audio/samples/musicradar-emo-samples.zip They're actually bass/drum/guitar samples and they're complete shit. instaud.io/3N98 Who uses trash like this? Why is FL Studio your default program for opening .wav's? >I am seriously considering getting a one Please don't. >clyp.it/gtrm0ylq >Purchase your tracks today. People pay money for music like this? I'm too much of a boomer to understand trap.
Colton Hughes
>lost all motivation to practice my instrument >incredibly bored when practicing or when fiddling with new tracks I haven't nailed down >end up just continually writing new material to a few chords and not expanding on them Wtf is this what depression is like?
>Wtf is this what depression is like? yeah, then it advances to can't even come up with chords even though you've been playing music for a decade, and eventually you don't enjoy making music or doing anything really, then you don't want to get out of bed ever. Shit's real
Wanna know the real secret weapon? Taking care of your mental and physical health so you actually have motivation and energy (: oh.... god....
Connor Hall
I'll check when I'm back from working my second job. Gotta pay those Swedes somehow.
Hunter Watson
I think this is why you should mimic other artists before trying to make something original. I got Reason so I wouldn't need a bunch of shit cluttering my room. I'll start exercising tomorrow.
Easton Moore
bump
Evan Watson
writing an entire song with iris using a sample with ambiguous harmonic content shit hurts but it sounds v niecceee (8
Anyone got their sample libraries for kontakt or omnisphere or whatever running off an NVMe M.2 drive? Building an audio production PC and trying to figure out if I should get a 1tb NVMe as my main sample drive or a 2tb SATA SSD. So far I think I should go with the 2tb for the extra space, doesn't seem like the speed of the NVMe will make that drastic of a difference in terms of sample-streaming performance.
Jonathan James
no cute girls can fill the void that k-on left man :(((
izotope iris. it's a (very meh) sampler that you plays back only certain frequencies/times you draw in; it's a unique instrument that hasn't been fully or even partially expanded upon for such a great idea. If you're into arca he endorsed it lol
Tyler Moore
>izotope iris youtube.com/watch?v=x31jgoCzbu4 ahhh, the possibilities are infinite! I'll never be able to make music with all these options.
Joseph Cooper
tbqhwyanon it's probably my least used instrument just because it's so straight forward.... completely sample dependent, but there's not really a whole lot of "sample manipulation" going on, shit's basically a fancy filter with some of the trash distortions as a bonus, you've gotta bounce down if you want to do real sampling or granular shit after that
Brandon Taylor
I run several TB of kontakt off a regular external USB 3 HDD, a large project that uses about 32GB of ram for kontakt will take several minutes to cache to the point where I can hit play. Note: Just because the instruments cache eventually to 32GB does not mean I'm using every single note in every single instrument. So it still works out, as its dynamically cacheing. I would just imagine it will be seconds in your case.
So basically, while USB 3.0 HDD, thunderbolt HDD is perfectly functional, going anywhere beyond will just be several factors better.
The main bottleneck for my giant Kontakt projects is RAM (32GB ddr3) and CPU (3.7ghz quad core xenon e5), NOT HDD recall. So keep that in mind. Hope that helps.
Nolan Hernandez
I would get the 2TB because it doesn't take long to go over half a TB and then maybe things won't be as fast on a single TB
Daniel Gutierrez
BUMP WTF
Jaxon Hall
Sammy died, Demarcus offed himself, and Phaser's new meds are working.
Elijah Rogers
Is that the blueface dance?
Logan Walker
Yes. You can tell by the fact that the moves are the same, and that the guy is Blueface.
Why the fuck do people buy hardware synths worth thousands? No seriously, why? >inb4 muh knobs >inb4 rich/lush analog feel
Dominic Lopez
Yes it works thanks for caring I returned the shitty psu and the cx550 arrives tomorrow
Cooper White
Nice. Did you try it? How's the performance?
James Sanchez
Yes It's ok, runs amplitube and slate verbsuite easy like it's nothing. I once checked and it had 4gb of ram in use but I still had 12gb free lol I'm reading on overclocks so I can get the best (safe) performance with the iGpu and do some gaming
Jayden Murphy
none of that would be surprising ... but fuck man, how would we even know? :S
>Phaser's new meds are working did you just make that up or did he actually mention medication? haven't seen him surface in a minute....
some people can afford it and like...... enjoy it? weird right? as long as they're not faggots about it who gives a fuck dude
Xavier Torres
That's good man. Happy it's going well.
Elijah Williams
Thanks
Hudson Reyes
I made it up. Actually he seems to me like the sort that would avoid medication for fear it would make him less of himself. And yeah, there's no way to be sure. I've pretended to be both Sambo and Demi in the past.
Gavin Reyes
>I've pretended to be both Sambo and Demi in the past. yeah that shit's pretty obnoxious
... He does seem to be the type to avoid it like that, but having fucked with meds for depression and having a terrible experience+studying psych imo people take medication way too lightly lol
Julian Bell
If I had a shitton of disposable income I'd buy a few synths, an electropiano, and some tape machines because I think they'd be fun to play with. So basically >muh knobs
Adrian Rodriguez
Look my ill throat video, it was posted just now.
Nathaniel Reyes
Oh I'm 100% sympathetic to an aversion to psychoactive medications. I'm really happy my parents refused to have me medicated for behavioral issues when I was a kid.
Jeremiah Green
>I'm really happy my parents refused to have me medicated for behavioral issues when I was a kid. And you ended up on Yea Forums. It was really good indeed.
Ayden Bennett
this is one of the most tame and normie friendly boards lol
I am jealous, i was pressured to alter my brain chemistry o__o
John Thomas
Is 1 or 2 pills of escitalopram and olanzapin enough to change your brain chemistry?
it's literally supposed to alter the balance of neurotransmitters in your brain, so yes. I wasn't meaning to imply that it's not the right choice for a lot of people, because it absolutely is, just that we collectively hand them out as a first resort as if there aren't risks and there aren't other alternatives (namely therapy, which still has a stigma attached and people see as less convenient)
Cooper Reed
What has changed on my brain after taking 2 pills of each
Dylan Diaz
>on encima de sobre じゃなくて en in
Zachary Roberts
Lol, funnily enough I did in fact get a prescription for benzos but I haven't taken them. The cons are much worse than the pros so it doesn't really make sense. At least in my situation.
I'm mostly lurking as of late.
Pretty accurate desu.
Based and redpilled.
Justin Green
What has changed in my brain after 2 pills of escitalopram and olanzapina
William Nguyen
>all these people making music that nobody's ever going to listen to Isn't that like playing catch by yourself
Brandon Scott
you're going to have less serotonin and be less reactive to some other chemical that's metabolized from something else, idk i just skimmed the wikipedia article of olanzapin because idk it.
not all of those make sense
>not abusing your meds pftttt
post more, i miss you bro :(
Jackson Howard
the pleasure i get from making music and feeling satisfied with it and discovering new ideas and learning is completely separate than the pleasure of having somebody else enjoy it
Logan Stewart
More like recording yourself masturbating in the hopes someone with industry pull sees your stuff and offers you a job.
Brandon Brooks
>>not abusing your meds >pftttt Too much of a pussy for that I'm afraid.
>post more, i miss you bro :( I'm sorry man. I've been thinking of leaving Yea Forums at least for a while. Just enough to get my life in order (as it takes so much of my time and attention) with a tighter schedule. I'll experiment with allocating Yea Forums/Internet time to specific hours for now. Are you GNA?
Jason Brown
shit's basically just less convenient alcohol lol
>I've been thinking of leaving Yea Forums at least for a while. >Just enough to get my life in order same except it wouldn't help 8( I hope you get it together though man yes
Anthony White
>same except it wouldn't help 8( Why not?
>I hope you get it together though man And you as well my friend.
>yes Are you on Discord? Is your profile picture a person looking to the right? If so, could you log in for a minute?
Jacob Thompson
Damn bro I like that ur being honest but that kinda hurt. Is it really that bad?
Owen Evans
>instaud.io/3N9s No, sorry, it's mostly sound choice and I wasn't thinking. Industrial music is a thing that I didn't consider. I feel like you could fit in there.
Brody Anderson
I HAD MY SUSPICIONS WTF WHO ARE YOU
Zachary Hughes
>then you don't want to get out of bed ever How do I avoid reaching that stage? I am fuckin scared, I don't enjoy music anymore and my house is turning into a big pile of trash
Angel Lopez
Can you guys get a mod to unban Samuel from the discord
Alexander Evans
Whyever would we (or you) want that?
Jeremiah Smith
why the fuck would anybody want that i want him banned from Yea Forums altogether
Angel Morgan
Just so he doesn't khs
Jordan Torres
Are you mad because he actually tries to go outside and make music with other people instead of playing with synths on his bedroom forever
Austin Flores
he isn't some neet with no friends wtf
>i'm not sam by the way
Adrian Hill
I got a 8 to 5 job that forces me to shower every day but stresses me to the point of dizziness and I my "friends" are people I happen to play with and I barely chat with them
Nathan White
bruh i'm sorry your real life isn't satisfying but you have to be not a faggot online if you don't want to get chased out
Brody Murphy
I won't shit up the discord I promise
William Foster
I don't believe you, but even if I did i don't go on the /prod/ discord because they're faggots too
Gabriel Reyes
I could just join the server with another account if I just wanted to shitpost
Joshua Fisher
If i had to guess it would be that you got banned for either flipping out at someone who criticized you or you just posted your shit way too much the same way you do here, so you'd be identifiable with a new account which is why you're asking to be unbanned
Luke Rivera
Of course it would be identifiable if I posted my music retard
Jacob Bell
i'm saying that your problem isn't as simple as "just make another account" and you were bullshitting that you could just go right ahead and rejoin the server as you were before
Ayden Edwards
I can join it with another account just to have a chat
Nathaniel Powell
Any of you /prod/igies know how to extract the backing track from this?
>I'll experiment with allocating Yea Forums/Internet time to specific hours for now. This can help, but I think the best approach is to only use the internet when you have a purpose. The mindlessness of browsing is the real danger.
Andrew Richardson
>The mindlessness of browsing is the real danger. So this is where my weekends go. I think I should leave too. Will you guys still be here when I'm gone so when I do come back... I won't be alone ;_;
Thomas Mitchell
True. I was just talking about it on Discord with the other user. Ideally I should just disconnect the computer from the Internet and only reconnect it at the end of the day after all the work is done, but I want to experiment with different options too. Like putting Firefox inside a TrueCrypt container to make it a hassle to use it, so I don't fall into procrastination out of habit. We'll see what ends up being the most effective (at least for me; not sure if everyone's the same).
Joseph Perez
I'm nearing my wits' end. All I want to do is make music at the moment and I can't because I'd upset my housemates (who don't even charge me rent) if I actually go at it full force, because it'd be too noisy. I'm also severely broke, about to flunk out of uni, depression, self-hatred and nihilism is seeping into every facet of my life and I can't make it stop. I've created a fucked up goal of a renting my own house and building up a studio and not letting ANYONE hear what I work on until I'm satisfied with it because I don't know how to interact musically (or casually) with people. There is no way to realize this in a timely manner because I need to work on something like right now, I feel like life is slipping past me and I've done absolutely nothing with it. Sorry for the bitching but I'm looking to other musicians for advice and no one in my life really understands where I'm at right now.
What kind of music do you want to make? Can't you make it all on a computer using headphones while people are around?
Nicholas Sanchez
We shall all leave, so when you do come back, you won't find anybody and will stay out of here.
Maybe we should ask the shitposter to finally ruin /prod/ once and for all so we don't have any excuse to stay.
Just joking. Just find a way to use it in moderation. No need to be so drastic unless you absolutely can't do that.
Wyatt Sullivan
I did absolutely nothing but listen to music and refresh Yea Forums all day. Actually, I did download a bunch of sample packs from musicradar/sampleradar and then I listened to one and it was absolutely terrible. No wonder they're given away for free. It's like they're 8 bar loops made by...
Caleb Collins
Same, pretty much.
Joshua Jackson
fuck I wasted a bunch of days like that, it's definetely the lack of inspiration, you should try something like a new plugin or messing around with the stems of a song you like or even buying new gear, it helps a lot
Benjamin Carter
I still do not entirely know. Lately I've been listening to mainly industrial, rock, and techno after years of generally /bleep/-tier stuff. But I've dabbled in probably every single electronic music genre possible with using a DAW and a few VSTs and sample packs.
>Can't you make it all on a computer using headphones That's what I've been doing, since around 2012, and a couple of years ago I bought some monitors to work on stuff when no one is home, which is pretty much never. The mixes always go to shit and become lifeless because I'm still learning and trying to carve out a style. There is probably about a couple weeks or less of actual "studio" days where I could work on mixes through these speakers for a few hours since I got them around 2015. While I enjoy working with VSTs and such, I want to record more instruments like guitars, drums, percussion, and even my shitty voice if I can get it better. Whatever I'm doing and have been doing for the past few years isn't working out and for the first time in my life, I'm beginning to consider that it isn't just me being trash, it's also my environment.
Dylan Price
In my case I don't think it's lack of inspiration. I was working on my Dreams remix yesterday and came up with some good ideas that I want to expand upon but today I was just dreading having to go back to work tomorrow for another 50+ hour week. Sitting here telling myself I was going to do some work so I could come home at a reasonable time... nah. By the way, do we have a list of all the Dreams remixes? I vaguely remember two: one by a guy who sang the vocals himself and another one that I remember existing but can't remember what it sounded like.
Sebastian Cruz
>I was working on my Dreams remix please tell me this is an ongoing joke
I also posted a WIP sketch of mine, but I'm not gonna post it again because it's embarrassing.
Austin Morgan
we don't have a list, I don't think there was enough people for making one
Landon Ward
I wish. >I want to record more instruments like guitars, drums, percussion, and even my shitty voice I feel you on that one. Can you rent studio time at a place near you? I feel like that could get expensive though... Thank you. I wonder if I saved any of the others. I might check next weekend.
>dreams remix >tracker autism >it's not even renoise autism multiplier
checks out
Jack Torres
>studio time Yeah, that costs too much for the amount of time I'm gonna want. And I don't know how to communicate any ideas or plans to them because I seem to be in a permanent experimental phase. I'd also have to be completely alone.
David Cruz
BASED IMPULSE TRACKER
Parker Gomez
:D >soundcloud.com/vince-vantronic/dreams This is great! ...except for that digital grindy noise that continues throughout the whole piece. Did he ever explain why he did that? The rest of it sounds so good. It's actually Schism. I'm sorry for being a poser.
Ian Young
what is it
Hunter Turner
I just started "producing" 5 days ago, well composing music, I cant make super big projects or make high quality shit or mix since I've got a shitty laptop and crappy earbuds. Anyways these are two things I've made clyp.it/bsqhaafb this one is supposed to be a lofi beat, starts with chill guitar, transitions into a bluegrassy lick which was supposed to more midwestern, then the beat. Recorded with my laptop mic, the bluegrass bit is recorded with my electric unplugged in emajadd9 tuning. clyp.it/umb5ug32 this is a heavier beat i made, scream recorded with laptop mic so it sounds like shit and its not something I normally do
Jason Bailey
>clyp.it/umb5ug32 NO! Stay away from the trap meme please. You can make good music as indicated by that guitar playing in your first link.
Landon Lewis
thank you user, and as for the second it was more so to see what I could do after I recorded a scream, wanted a heavy drop and something that sounded evil, gotta get experience in what i can starting out
this is the first beat i made, more guitar, just a looped beat though
Charles Bell
ay yo ima beatmaker
Camden Sanders
I'm the guy who sang, I took it down because I eventually took it down because my vocals were too quiet and still had some timing issues. Still it was interesting to work with a vocal track, first time I ever did that.
Liam Harris
If anyone is interested there's a used CZ-101 up on ebay starting at 150 USD.
Charles Bell
Is there a way to map ableton's automations to the volume of an audio track? I want to turn my accordion into a knob.
Easton Smith
To my surprise, my accordion isn't as horribly out of tune as I remember it. It actually sounds pretty good in some keys. Mostly the very flat or very sharp keys.
Carson Baker
I think version 10 has its own envelope follower, but if you're on an earlier version you'd need to look for a Max For Live envelope follower to do the job. It'll track volume changes and you could use that to write automation.

Nice, I am using 10. Technology is fucking magic. Accordion filter sweeps here I come.
What are the best theory books? I tried reading music notation years ago but I felt that my pea sized brain is too slow for it. I'm currently reading hooktheory and it's good so far, but now I feel like I'm missing out for "cheating" by not learning the proper way and skipping sheet music
Christian Hughes
I'm diggin this, the drum beat feels a little crowded if that makes any sense but it is trap so I get why there's so much goin on with that.
The sooner you leave /prod/ and make music for yourself the better. Been here for years and I'm sick of my music being ripped to shreds when in reality it isn't THAT bad. Call me a pussy or whatever, but after years of it, it gets old. And those few times you actually get good criticism, it doesn't make it worth it.
Liam Powell
I can relate to these texts: it sucks to make compromises.
You cannot except to mix good with only your headphones especially if you are a beginner.
When you have more instruments/stuff going on: In fact, you cannot even make good mixes while playing them quiet or moderate: you need good monitors, you need to blast them and you need to know what the fuck is going on.
Because I have limited time to play my songs during any day, I just focus on trying to record quality tracks and saving everything for later use. It gives me peace of mind that I still have all the stuff ready to go, it is all down to mixing it right maybe some day when I get the chance to actually sacrifice few weeks for the whole process. Currently I am just focusing on raw mixes.
Joseph Hall
>Been here for years and I'm sick of my music being ripped to shreds when in reality it isn't THAT bad denial things that are even slightly good get praised only time you get ripped if it's good is if you were previously being a faggot and posting it in response to an earlier conversation
Nicholas Peterson
all kinds of stuff except classical i guess. I'd love to be good enough to make good shit in any genre of popular music. Dub, reggae, synthpop, funk, RnB, rock, at least some noob tier simple jazz or jazz-influenced pop, acid house, cumbia, trip hop, trap, cuban son, experimetnal stuff anything that comes to mind..It'd be a dream come true. That's virtually impossible for me though. I'm a poor CS student from a shithole country, so my time is very limited. But I want to try to get as far as I can in music Thank you!

>Yea Forums producers
LMAOOOOO
Colton Turner
who has a macbook torrent for fl ornlogic or anything?
>you cannot even make good mixes while playing them quiet or moderate Yep. And I of course made the mistake of getting JBL LSR305s which do not output its full frequency range unless it's at a moderately full volume (aka too loud..)
>I just focus on trying to record quality tracks and saving everything for later use This is what I would do but I rely heavily on dynamics. So i need some things to be quiet and some things to be super loud. I also think I'm going to want to start composing around lyrics. I guess doing it the way you're describing might be my only option but I hate working through a track when I'm not happy with how it sounds overall. Good luck on your endeavors. I like to think producers like us will be able to put a lot of soul in our work when we finally get the environment we need.
Jackson Wilson
Do you guys have any tips on treating the high frequencies of hats, tops, and stuff like that? For Electronic music more precisely.
My mixes often sounds "papery", I use a lot of loop samples of tops and shit, but it looks like it makes my mixes busy in the high end, but it's not cristal clear and clean.
Michael Morgan
just put soundgoodizer on the master
Dylan Phillips
Even if you have good monitors, it has been nightmare to mix bass frequencies on low volumes. You always, and I mean always, end up compensating too much when playing the songs too quiet
The bass is all over the place in all of my mixes currently because I try to mix when other people are around etc. end up playing them with really moderately low volumes: then I when I get to blast them or listen them at my friends house for a reference: too much bass, way too much bass.
It is the only frequency I cannot master currently and just the reason is that I cannot mix loud
Noah Parker
>I like to think producers like us will be able to put a lot of soul in our work when we finally get the environment we need.
People like us end up having 6 month projects turning into 4 year endeavors. Sometimes the projects get too big to handle and you lose all perspective: you end up having external hard drives full of material that you need to work through, the piles get bigger and bigger
I am currently at this stage and I am terrified
Isaiah Hall

Jaxon King
Mix with your eyes. puT UP A TRACK you like and look at the eq then mid sides and imitate it's comparative balance
Aiden Parker
What are you doing to your channels? Compression can mess with highs and I don't even use it anymore lol, you don't need to layer hats shakers etc just have one at a time
Colton Hernandez
Use the mapping, chains etc videos on this online
Adam Smith
I can't relate to the papery description. Are you willing to post a example? I think a common problem folks run into is having too much freq content stomping in the same freq range domain- not doing enough subtractive eq to push each percussive element into its space, or just not treating high frequencies at all and having them pile up in a shrill pile of 8khz.
Jayden Phillips
I'm already in a stage like that. I have HUNDREDS of live sets and there are only a handful I come back to try and work on. When I have the fucking time to actually, y'know, practice a skill like a normal hobbyist would, I will find a way to make decent tracks. I don't want to stick to a certain genre, but I do have perspective. And most importantly, I'm too stubborn to quit because I don't enjoy anything else in life the way I do when I'm creating sounds. I have to stop myself from listening to music at times because I know I'll get too inspired, the ideas will flow and I know I can't do anything with that inspiration at all.
Colton Adams
I’m using reaper cause I have no money, recorded the guitars with my laptop mic, played the virtual instruments, programmed the drums, and added the effects how I wanted.
Oliver Flores
Why is the bottom note of a chord the most important? Shouldn't it be the top one, since it's the one you hear better? Like, if I change the bottom one the sound barely changes, but if I change the top one it changes dramatically.
Juan Jackson
use reference tracks and use span to see at wich levels their bass sits, it helps a bit
Jose King
Don't know, could have something to do with how we hear pitch. Every note includes the harmonic series and the loudest is the lowest while the overtones are gradually quieter the higher the pitch in acoustic instruments and vocals
Christopher Young
But the fundamental of the top note isn't necessarily lower than the fundamental of the bottom one.
Christopher Murphy
True, I'm just saying that's how pitch is in nature. What do you mean by 'most important' anyway. You could argue it isn't since melody which is higher is more important than bass.
Evan Edwards
It depends, I mean I don’t know if it’s considered as such. But you can invert your chords, and they’ll have a different quality. Like if I play C D F# A, maybe with the C and octave lower than D, it’ll sound different than D F# A C definitely, and play it two octaves lower and it’ll sound even more different, then you can rearrange the order you play the notes to C F# A D and it’ll be the same chord and sound different. It’s just depends, it’s important in the fact that in a triad it denotes the root, but of course you can invert triads and whatnot.
Michael Watson
Neither are more important than the other, they both are symbiotic and rely on each other. You need to lead in the bass and in the higher registers. Your bass will establish intervalic and rhythmic relationships with your melody which will give them more sense.
Isaiah Parker
By 'most important' I mean that it defines what chord it is and is called the "root". Or for example, every time I've seen someone make chords out of a melody they took the line and added notes on top, making the melody the bottom notes of the chords.
Of course, but outside of inversions it kinda is.
Cameron Robinson
>mfw my tracks always sound better before I start "mixing"
Daniel Long
I don't think that's been answered. Its like asking why do people prefer diatonic music to noise based music. Who knows? Why is music, why are we here?
Jaxon Walker
>Its like asking why do people prefer diatonic music to noise based music But that's a fact of life, not a rule that somebody made. Nobody decided that diatonic music sounds better than noise, but the bottom note being considered more important is something that people decided. What I'm asking is, why did they decide that?
Mason Williams
soundcloud.com/vince-vantronic Very impressive Soundcloud! Lots of good stuff on there, I like the Piano tracks you have, and your compositions vary alot. I'm not a pro by any means but also put more time into mixing/mastering.
This one I like I think it could be improved if you can give the Harmonics and/or Instrumentation a bit more Variation at a point. One Idea would be to have the Bassline also do a little melody at one point, where the other instruments give mostly Chords/Appregio for Atmosphere And maybe introduce a new Instrument in the middle frequencies to fill out the sound more I know you want it to sound calming and not hectic, but maybe you can also find more sounds to use in the drums for variation
I like the Harmonics of this and the classy kind of sound it has to it with the base and Piano, great stuff so far. You could find more different motives to alternate with. You might also want to experiment with maybe putting a Soundgoodizer in the Master to see what different mastering can do to give it bit more punch and crisp.
The guy who set up western tonality wouldn't have said the root of a triad is the 'most important' note of a chord. As you say, others don't treat it as the most important. Simon and Garfunkel for instance
Hudson Russell
But a lot of people still treat it as the main note, or the "foundation" so to speak. Why is that? I mean, it works from a music theory perspective, but why?
Julian Richardson
instaud.io/3NkV Kinda just screwed around, might make into a full song. I feel like the mixing on the lead is weird, should I do something with it or am I just hearing things?
Gavin Ramirez

I just reposted his link because user asked. Sorry for not making that clear.

there is a dedicated thread for soundcloud circlejerking
Grayson Watson
I don't know, just how music in a given key works like I said its a mystery. Could be because we're familiar with it, as in conditioned to accept it, or it could be inherent in humanity but probably not so much as equal temperament isn't a natural division of pitch system, or both
Zachary Collins
> a tone with a frequency of 300 Hz and another with a frequency of 200 Hz are both multiples of 100 Hz (100 × 3 and 100 × 2 respectively). Their interval is, therefore, an aggregate of the second and third partials of the harmonic series of an implied fundamental frequency 100 Hz.
A higher note can seem like an overtone of a lower notes fundamental rather than independent of it. Maybe that's your answer
Brody Thompson
I'm not talking about familiarity at all. I'm not sure we're on the same page.
But that's the opposite of what happens. The top note doesn't get "blended" in the lower note's overtones, but is more audible. Even when playing chords with sine waves (so no overtones involved) the top is the most noticeable and the one that makes the most difference in the sound.
Any advice regarding the mixing/mastering? I completely suck at it.
When exporting the master (in Ableton) should I check the "normalize" box? I believe it's not good because it raises the master level artificially, am I right?.
Jordan Clark
Are you trolling now, who says higher notes makes the most difference and are more noticeable apart from you? I'm out, why don't you research it yourself if you're really into the subject
Cooper Hill
Maybe I'm weird, but if I make a chord and I change the top one it makes much more difference than if I change the bottom one.
In fact, when I want to whistle or hum a chord, it's always the top line, not the bottom.
Doesn't that make it the most noticeable?
Jeremiah Murphy
A melody isn't a chord
Adam Butler
I'm starting to think you're the one who's trolling here.
Elijah Morris
You understand that when you hum a note of a triad, it could be the root you're humming in a higher register?
Elijah Gonzalez
Yes I do understand that. What I'm saying is that that's never the case. I mean, I'm not deaf, I can tell which note of the chord I'm humming, and it's always the top.
Chase Flores
You mean the fifth?
Parker Stewart
If it's a normal triad, yes. Or even if it's not, or if there's an inversion or something, the top one is always the most apparent.
Carson King
The bottom note of a chord isn't the most important. Music theory could have labelled pitches and pitch functions differently but it didn't.
you got some good ideas going on with your synths there but your drums are kinda lacking, especially the kick feels like it should be more dominant. I really like the last 15 seconds but the lead melody isn't enough to carry the rest of the track imo.
Bentley Jones
Hello I'm fucking retarded and I'd like to ask if someone could please spoonfeed me a little bit so that I won't blow money on shit that won't help me. I've read the pastebin/reddit FAQ but shit's not clicking for me because I have smallbrain.
I want to record (bass)guitar on PC. What is the bare minimum I need? I understand that I need a digital audio workstation, which is no problem because I've been pirating shit all my life. But how do I actually get the sound into my PC? What's the thing called that will let me plug my instruments into my PC without making use of an amplifier or microphone?
Zachary Baker
I really like this. Have you considered adding some bass?
Jayden Hill
An audio interface.
Henry Martinez
>your drums are kinda lacking, especially the kick feels like it should be more dominant
Noted. Gonna play around with it more
>but the lead melody isn't enough to carry the rest of the track imo
Yep I kind of just threw in the last part because I wanted some kind of transitional cooldown so it could somehow segue into the beginning melody. thx
Jeremiah Diaz
Thanks user!
Gabriel Diaz
Thanks, yeah i have. I'm thinking of adding a simple drone-y bass string section as the bass in the first half, since the other instruments were all bouncing off each other
