What does /mu look for in a record store?
Dream record store
i don't live near any so i go to discogs
I can't afford records. But if I could I'd buy it from small bands that actually need the money.
one that actually has even half the shit i'm looking for, which has literally never been the case
Well what do you look for when you go to discogs user?
an actually good selection of CDs instead of just good vinyl
whatever has a cool cover
needs less vinyl and more cds
Ah a fellow cd buyer, I’m more into them mainly because there cheaper and smaller than vinyl lol
based
I know of one not too far, but I don't have any interest in vinyl or physical discs. They might have shirts I want, but I'm too anxious to go there to find out.
lmao pussy
Reasonable prices are all I need.
Cmon user you can do it,go there, buy an album, a shirt or to,talk to someone wearing a band shirt of a band you like, it’s an amazing experience
A punk/alt-girl cashier
It closes in an hour, and I've got a Velvet Underground shirt on. I guess I'll go now, worst comes to worst, I buy nothing.
The record store in that picture is my local record store. For some reason it's the first picture to come up when you google "record store".
It's The Record Exchange in Boise
Reasonable prices paired with a good selection of both new and vintage records as well as a friendly staff. There is a place near me called "doesn't and will never exist again" that I like to go to a lot.
But honestly I get most of my vinyl from thrift shops and the internet.
i hope you get laughed at, sperg
>larger collection of CDs, and at least OP's pic amount of vinyl (preferably as large a vinyl collection as possible)
>good prices on used vinyl (thinking around 10 bucks for a used popular record, unless there's a catch like original pressing or whatever)
>staff that know what they're talking about, which they usually do, but sometimes you get someone who just relies on an in-store electronic inventory
>plays good music over the in-house speakers, or at least some music so it's not just quiet. been in a few that are quiet all the time and it's awkward as fuck when there's only like, you and the cashier in there
>expansive amount of entry level Yea Forums-core so i can at least fall back on something i know i enjoy if i don't find that one le obscure record i'm looking for
>decent merch/t-shirt section
>as little genre separation as possible believe it or not, so if i'm looking for a specific artist i don't have to go to 4 different locations to check if they're stocked there (example, Brian Eno might be in rock or electronic, Death Grips might be in rap or rock, et cetera)
should elaborate on the used vinyl stuff:
gimme a huge bargain bin with popular but bad condition records priced at 3-5 bucks each, and gimme a better, larger area of popular and used records for 10 bucks or so. thats all i need
CDs. I might invest in a record player at some point because I have always been a avid listener of most genres of electronic music and electronic stuff often is vinyl exclusive.
good well curated selection not just new stuff. more old stuff than new stuff but not just oldies, soul, new age, and folk shit. i hate record stores that only sell new/ "mint" shit (usually what they mean is it has clean cover and a plastic sleeve lol). i lik ones with character where its clearly someones passion and just overflowing with all kinds of stuff over ones that are really organized and look like urban outfitters displays
looks really corporate
Thx
large selection of used merchandise, and not just vinyl
new vinyl that's not just represses of old vinyl
a non shit jazz section
I'm surprised there's any record stores at all in Idaho. I think it's just Boise and like, Moscow.
I hate this state.
It's really not corporate at all, the used records selection is gigantic. The picture in the OP is taken from pretty much the center of the store, so you're missing about 3/4ths of the selection in this pic. The only record store i've been to with a better selection is Amoeba in San Fran, but my experience with record stores is almost entirely on the west coast.
Boise is great, the rest of the state is unlivable. World class outdoorsy stuff though.
I used to live in Denver and would go to Twist and Shout regularly. I've lived in 8 different states now and the only one that's comparable is Amoeba (LA, never been to SanFan).
One where the employees actually listen to music.
I’ve been to every record shop in my city and not a single employee has known what band/record I was looking for. They weren’t even unknown bands. They just ask me the genre and tell me what section to look under. The point of a shop is to go browse and discuss music. If I wanted to just fucking buy a record, I’d buy it online.
all of these plus the inside has to look like peewee’s playhouse
Yo how cool would it be if there was actually a Peewee’s Playhouse record store with crazy puppets you could talk to and all the employees dressed like Cowboy Curtis and shit. That’d be fucking rad.
>vinyl
>2019
as a britbong i mainly go here
just wish they had a bit more US Hardcore/Post Hardcore
I work at a record store. This has been super interesting to read.
employees who help me find what I'm looking for and maybe give me some recommendations that aren't
1. 5,000 dollars
2. bands everybody has heard of and made their mind up on
also, a decent selection of music from this time period that isn't like boomer comebacks or imagine dragons.
I don't currently but I have as well.
I miss it.
Except that the pay was shit.
i just want to find a place that will carry my japanese stuff i like, the closest place that has that is a kinokuniya bookstore in SF and their selection is tiny.
78s, international and avant garde LPs, folk, and electronic/avant CDs.
Under no circumstances will I buy anything new, it strictly must be used.
>aren't bands everybody has heard of and made their mind up on
t. contrarian scum
slsk is my dream record store. if i think about an album I wanna hear I can get it downloaded within a couple of mins.
Probably they email me three times a day and only stock albums from bandcamp
Metal, Goth, 80s Hip Hop/Rap, Syntwave, Synthpop, New Wave, Indie, etc.
music i like (obviously) but also a good selection of used records and local music
I like to think I'm not a contrarian, I just don't see the point in asking a guy who gets paid to know about music to tell me about music everybody and their mom knows about. I don't even know that much about music either - I'm easy to impress. The store I go to is kinda wack, I guess, but it's the only one nearby.
I heard Boise is the new hipster flock, is it insufferable there yet?
