guitar? learn scales and in like 5 years you'll have your own sound.
synth? fuck around with knobs till you find something you like and rip off different artists but combine them in a way that you've never heard. for example, take the rhythm from rage against the machine, the chords from david bowie, and make some power metal style lyrics or something. yknow
