>clyp.it/x5jhbnyu I love the instrumentals and it makes me want to go out to guitar center this weekend to pick up a chorus pedal. The recording of the vocals just doesn't sound as pristine as the instruments which is why it feels a little off to me; your voice is unique and cool and I'm glad this track doesn't sound like the others you've posted here (I feel like two of the songs you posted here before sounded extremely similar to each other). How many tracks should one have? 4, 8, 16?
Noah Green
Thanks for listening, man. I've been posting 3 other tracks over the past week or so to get some fresh ears on them. Do you mean you don't like the two that you think sound similar, or that you're just glad I'm not just making the same sound over and over again? If I posted the three tracks in this thread would you take a listen and tell me which are the two the sound too similar?
Ian Rivera
>that you're just glad I'm not just making the same sound over and over again? This. The track I'm thinking of was posted weeks ago so there is a chance that you completely redid the arrangement and it was actually the same song.
Samuel Thomas
Can you use a tight band pass eq to eliminate a note from a chord? Possibly using multiple tight bands to eliminate the corresponding harmonic series...?

hey does anyone have a full pdf of the synthesizer cookbook? been looking for it, am broke but it seems like a good way to actually get into sound design
How do you typically EQ an SM58? It usually sounds dull so I'll add a high shelf at 3k at 6db but it doesn't sound right. I might invest into a e835 or e935.
tracks they don't put all the drums in one track, they don't consolidate one off effects into one track >>automation out the ass volume and filters, they just leave it open to look cool
>How many tracks should one have? completely genre dependent, and could vary wildly from there because of difference in workflow as mentioned ^
not counting different drums, busses, racks/sends etc i usually have 8-12 ish, never really get over 20, but i consolidate everything i can
no, never barring an unaffected synthesizer, which you could do *in theory* on something like pure sines/non-complex waves, harmonics the harmonics are going to be too complicated
bruh that's terrible lol what are you doing, post an example or something etc
typical mistake is wanting to make everything bright and audible, i'm guessing the recording is fine and you just aren't used to the sound or you somehow managed to completely fuck up the recording... or something dun broked
first of all what the fuck second of all fuck you for dropping your soundcloud
Owen Rogers
the best way to get into sound design is to buy a synth or download a softsynth and learn it inside and out. then make sweet love to it
Dominic Moore
>soundcloud = aids here (for some reason) Yeah, agreed that that's a dick move. Can't du nuffin bout it tho. ;-)
Eli Bell
ive tried with multiple softsynths and i get overwhelmed and bored, idk what to look at or focus on most of my music is sample-based for this reason lol, unless i find tutorials for sounds i want
Joseph Perez
Study counterpoint.
Liam Rivera
Alright, took off my unintentional self-promo. Now it's fair.
Luke White
should i?
Lucas Wright
Force yourself to initialize everything and then just work by tweaking only one parameter until you've fully understood it? You shoul.
Landon Diaz
Feels kinda flat. Lacking some momentum. Pick a climax to your song and build to it. Maybe some smaller local climaxes. The vocal processing feels like a little overkill, especially if you're using it for the whole song. I feel like your singing lacks some breath support and possibly diction, but it's not bad. Remember to get big breaths down into your stomach.
No redeeming qualities.
Started reading Counterpoint in Composition for you. Rate my firmi please
Sibelius. Version 6 I think. I can't necessarily recommend it, but it works and from what I understand all the major notation softwares kind of suck in their own way.
Caleb Hall
Not even one redeeming quality? Harsh. :^(
Sibelius, MuseScore, etc. or idk... PLAYING REAL INSTRUMENTS
Landon Hughes
Thank you. The fonts look nice. I'm holding out for Dorico to support guitar tab and then I'm all in. Wish I would have played cello or viola so I could easily read that alto clef. >PLAYING REAL INSTRUMENTS Huh? Are you memorizing everything you've ever made up?
Eli Wright
>Wish I would have played cello or viola so I could easily read that alto clef. Protip, pretend it's treble clef and look at the space/line directly above the note. Helps to physically put your finger on the score. With a little practice it's pretty easy.
Zachary Rivera
>Huh? Are you memorizing everything you've ever made up?
Look, (trying to think of a rebuttal to him not finding my joke funny because of its lack of originality, but can't, so why not say) I'm just kidding around. Peeps actually come here for prod help. I'm here for my own amusement. jeez.
Ryan Lewis
its a vidya remix tho
Jackson Stewart
>I'm here for my own amusement. jeez. That's the only reason I'm here too; I'm just too depressed to find jokes funny. I might finally get around to posting a clip of my Dreams remix this weekend though. Maybe next weekend. Maybe. Thank you; that's actually pretty easy to do. That's okay.
Blake Baker
How do you make deconstructed bedroom pop. Trying to birth a new genre. What genres do you guys wanna make anew? This question is retarded. Bleh.
Ethan Gutierrez
i wanna make chiptune but for black people
Joshua Ortiz
is chiptune the white man's music?
Hunter Thompson
G-Funk almost had it with the synths at least.

no(?) all i know is i was made fun of for liking it by other kids

Is it all going to be oldschool jungle/breakbeat? If so, I might need to sign up for clyp, but that won't be until this weekend.
Aaron Turner
well, you see, i'm homeless, hence why it's deconstructed. lol.
MSI will always stay a place in my feelies. Did you feel threatened? :^)
Jordan Thompson
MSI will always stay a place in my feelies. Did you feel threatened? Sorry I raped you. :^)
Matthew Evans
nah dude i get what you mean, i just have a hateboner for music journalism pushing things into boxes, oversimplifying and trying to build hype artificially etc.... which is what i think when i hear "deconstructed"
>homeless somebody posted a video a week~ ago of some kid who's doing pretty well making a song just plugging his guitar into his phone and sounding pretty fucking good, iirc he's in the band "the internet." It might not be convenient but i'd imagine you could make something with extremely minimal tools; what i think of for deconstructed bedroom pop is basically the same thing as it is now but not trying so hard to push the lo-fi "bedroom" aesthetic.... like not trying to sound like some 90s 4track shit but just "yeah i made this with my phone lol idgaf" ... and the same shit as other subversions: avoiding the accepted lyrical topics and just being much more self aware in general. idk bedroom pop so i'm just talking out my ass tho
Xavier Campbell
Do I need to get a different mic for recording acoustic guitar and vocals? Or will a decent-quality mic be suitable for both? Any suggestions?
the latter i am "lol dude just sm57 xD" - pro but most people are going to say to get a good condenser, which captures things more naturally; cheap dynamics sound better than cheap condensers so
Gabriel Price
What about a AT2020?
Leo Roberts
Got a new drum plugin called GetGood Drums yesterday, started this with it. Definitely feels like a step up from Superior Drummer. The dry samples are so much more suited for modern styles.
>clyp.it/x5jhbnyu I dig this. The balance is really nice and it's a very stylistic production. Vox are a tad bit on the nasaly end of the spectrum, but I don't think it's the vocalist, it's some sort of distortion that's happening and really boosting the low mids. I'd pull a tad bit out between 300-700 Hz. Could also use a bit of top end sparkle, but that's personal preference.
idk man, haven't used it. google site:gearslutz.com it to see people argue lol
Christopher Green
oh shit. Someone actually gave me a legitimate answer. Thank you. Steve Lacy is who you're talking about. Yeah, that's a technological limitation. What I'm envisioning is like an album of sorts that deconstructs the bedroom musician into a different setting. You notice how most bedroom musicians are oh so lowkey in their presentation but are mad skilled at their shit? What if this bedroom musician is a lazy fuck neet who doesn't clean after himself, is barely competent in playing music & is on the verge of getting kicked out of his mom's house & out to the street to fend himself? I dunno, bring some stakes to their environment than "oh, my 1st world problems need to be heard!". I know it's mostly love but fuck. There is a surburban safety net around the ethos of this genre & it'd be cool to cut it open. You know the look of the Clairo's, Cuco's, Boy Pablo's, them lot. Wanna bring something new & riveting to an overly placid style of music. I dunno if that made sense. Bedroom Punk, where there are holes are over your walls.
Jacob Powell
It really depends on how your vocals sound desu. What's your price range?
Jason Green
>lazy fuck neet who doesn't clean after himself, is barely competent in playing music & is on the verge of getting kicked out of his mom's house oh yes, hello
I know exactly what you're getting at and completely agree, that's why I don't listen to that shit lol. I like the idea of neet punk ... but i feel uncomfortable cranking my amp to record shit like that so I just make hip-hop and ambient and wanky exerimental shit instead (:
... idk, i think that aesthetic has a limited "internet" (Yea Forums and sections of youtube) appeal... like sadboy faux emo weirdness is cool in hip-hop but less so in other genres right now.... and even then it's more about fashion than legitimately being frustrated and "punk" to most listeners.
Noah Cook
>one mic, record this guitar >one brush, paint this intricate portrait You have yet to swat the fly from my hand, grasshopper. Come back when you have a better question.
Kayden Nguyen
Do you mean in terms of how good I am at singing or like the timbre of my voice? I'm not an amazing singer but I hope that being able to hear myself in decent quality will help with that. I'd say I'm probably in the baritone range when I sing.
I don't know, like $200? I'm not hurting for money right now but I also don't want to spend unnecessarily. Something mid-budget would probably be about right. I would like to do both clean vocals and harsh (death growls, etc.) if that makes a difference

Hello. I'm new to prod, hoping to make some dub techno. I'm planning on buying a minilogue xd and drumbrute impact soon, but I was wondering how I should mix/record them. Any reccs? Preferably under $400 total with extra inputs for later purchases. Thanks ^_^
Solved Downloaded WinRAR and opened through it instead. Weird shit
Dylan Anderson
Awesome, thank you
Ryder Diaz
Holy shit, that wasnt b8?

Honestly a great all rounder mic is the MXL 990 for like $65, and you could get two in that price range and make a stereo pair. I used the 990 on countless productions before I upgraded, and to be honest, until I got into mics above $750 or so, I still couldn't beat it. I don't know what they do to get the quality that high for a mic that cheap, but they fucking do it right, that's all I can say.
It works great on voice guitar, room micing, almost anything you throw at, as long as it isn't particularly sibilant (don't use it for overheads on a drum kit for example).
You WILL need either an interface with phantom power or an external power supply (if you don't have an interface with phantom power)
Nice, I'll check it out. I already got an audio interface with phantom power for my stringed instruments so it's no issue.
Oliver Ortiz
Yeah, it'd only be a niche of a niche of a niche at that point & not a wide audience would identify or be entranced with such a pathetic character. Many ppl would like mostly background music for whatever they got going on with a relatable image plastered over for comfort. I shouldn't really that much of a fuck about this. I just thought it was a cool idea to post out there.
This guy gets it. Fuck em too!
Andrew Lopez
No, unfortunately. I've only ever pirated samples/plugins from rutracker mostly and have only discovered audioz recently
Xavier Richardson
Everyone who isn't trying to argue the answer is not one mic, but multiple decent mics, has clearly never seen the fucking massive difference between a one mic setup and a 4 mic setup. The fact that nobody is saying find 4 cheap mics instead of one mic just goes to show that nobody offering advice here has any experience recording acoustic instruments properly. Has anyone ever stopped to think about how an acoustic guitar actually works, and why it sounds like the way it does?
Jonathan Baker
Actually just to show you, I used it on on my voice for the background Vox AND the background acoustic guitar in this because it was what I had laying around at the time. I can give more examples if you want.
That's why I recommended the MXL 990. It's a great all-rounder and you can get a stereo pair for super cheap. Or hell, 3 or 4 and you're still under $300.
does this sounds trashy enough? not going for full blow-out per say, but i'm not sure if i got it good, i think i my have gone overboard on the kick
Henry Roberts
You're cool, don't worry, you mentioned stereo pairs, I dont think anyone else understood what you meant tho Plus oh damn I need like 10 of these asap, I just found a way to turn my basement into a reverb chamber and I need to mic the fuck out of it
Jonathan Wilson
I don't really hear any acoustic guitar and the vocals at the end are too buried for me to really distinguish their quality, though they don't sound bad. The song overall sounds sick though, super clean and punchy and that guitar tone on the leads is gnarly. What are you using for that?
Grayson Rodriguez
Do you think a stereo sound is sufficient for acoustic? My audio interface only has two I/O so I couldn't really do more. I'm a total noob to recording if it wasn't apparent already
Xavier Powell
Thanks! I'm using the Line 6 Helix Rack for all guitar and bass.
And yeah, neither the acoustic guitar nor the vox were supposed to be distinct, just supposed to blend with the wall of sound there haha. Here's a different one that explains how the mic sounds a little better. This is actually my band. Just finished up our next release. We had other mics to pick from but the 990 just happened to work perfectly for our singer.
Two is almost always enough. You could go with more if you wanted to capture some room reverb but for 99% of cases two mics are more than enough. One pointed at the 12th fret, one somewhere on the body almost always works great for me.
James Williams
Buy a cheap mixer, and just send the L+R out to 1+2 in, boom, you just made a bus and can have as many mics as you have channels on that mixer
Now use 4 >channel/mic 1 put in front of soundhole, under a foot away--- aim it towards the bottom of the neck (or highest fret), set pan on mixer to 10 o clock >channel/mic 2 as close as you can get it, place mic 2 in same vicinity as mic 1, only point it in the opposite direction, towards the bottom, pan on mixer to 2 oclock >channel/mic 3+4: USE CONDENSERS FOR THESE, set up the stands so that they form an equalateral triangle with where you are sitting, have them higher up, and pointed down towards you, put three on your left, and 4 on your right, hard pan channel 3 to full left, and 4 to full right
Aaron Williams
Also what this user said
Wyatt Bailey
Towards the bridge, not bottom**
Liam Nguyen
>neither the acoustic guitar nor the vox were supposed to be distinct I can appreciate that as an aesthetic choice but I'm sure you can realize how it might not be helpful for gauging a mic's quality lol. The mic is definitely good enough from my purposes I would say so I'll probably pick it up. You guys sound sick though, I'm a big fan of prog metal as you might have guessed so I'll check you guys out. If you guys ever come down to Houston I'll definitely try to catch you at a show.
Awesome, thanks for the tips. I got to say you guys seem a lot more knowledgeable and willing to help out than the folks at /gg/.
Gavin Harris
Ooo, nice rig, I knew you were cool I'm more of a "I prefer the older version" kinda guy, myself tho How is the helix tho, I'm in the market for q guitar processor but I'm not sure if they worked out a good enough tube algorithm yet. my jcm800 still sounds better to me, but I also havent had a chance to hear the helix in person yet
I thought you were literally waving a garbage bag in front of a microphone until I turned it up.
Dylan Peterson
>DBREE is gone what other sites do you guys use for larger files?
Andrew Wood
Goddammit, I hate cameras
Connor Turner
Lmao, never consult a guitarist on how to record one Find an engineer who plays guitar
Adrian Diaz
Lol I definitely realized that after I posted it. I'm on 3 hours of sleep right now, not thinking super straight haha
But thanks man! We're trying to get out to Houston more often. Just have a little circuit here from Austin to San Antonio at the moment. If you know any good venues for us to look at, lemme know.
Glad I could help!
Well I've had it for about 6 months now and have loved it for pretty much EVERYTHING. I've used the Axe-FX and Kemper and I have to be honest, to me the Helix has a much more "natural" sound than the other two, which I like from a recording aspect very much. Shit just sits right in a mix. I hardly have to do anything. It's one of the the best studio tools I've purchased to date. Hell, I use the onboard delays and reverbs for shit in my mixes all the time now. It's so damn versatile and I haven't found a single instance where it sounds bad.
While playing live though, I to like to have that "cab in a room" feel rather than going straight into the board as many people do. I just upgraded my poweramp to a class A/B a couple of weeks ago. Basically I run the Helix as a Preamp/FX box. Once I added a real poweramp and cab into the equation, I literally couldn't distinguish this from a tube amp anymore. The sound, dynamics, and responsiveness are so on point.
Ok, I'm still not gonna be convinced tubes have been officially surpassed by digital from one review, but I'm not gonna lie, I really am interested now since you said you like this over Axe-FX + Kemper
Also broooooooo I just listened to your track, fuck yeah this is epic I normally dont post my shit on here, but here's a link to a project that was put on hold (and I cant even remember what the reason exactly was, but it was ridiculously stupid) but it was a remix/collab for my old band's EP (and disregard the awful mix, the project never got finished due to band politics bullshit) Im really digging the very big sound you guys have, I'm way into the "epic" vibe you guys have, if you ever want some remixes or need a really convincing orchestral part made up, reach out bro, if I'm not swamped with client work, I'm so down Link soundcloud.com/aetryx/hippocrit/s-bOBkv
Camden Brown
Yo this shit SLAPS dude. Y'all should make amends and finish that because holy fuck that goes hard lol.
I'd actually love to have a remix done. Let's keep in contact. I followed you on SC. Here's mine
>I'm still not gonna be convinced tubes have been officially surpassed by digital from one review Fair, and if you're coming from a tube amp there will still be some adjusting to do regardless. But if you kept your Marshall and ran one of these into the poweramp section, you'd be damn surprised.
>I really am interested now since you said you like this over Axe-FX + Kemper It is definitely a personal preference thing, but there's this quality to the Helix's amp/poweramp emulation that I haven't found in the AFX or Kemper. I can't put my finger on it. But tons of guys are making the switch from Fractal to Line 6 these days. Plini, David Maxim Micic, Monuments, etc.
OH ALSO if you do get a Helix and run it direct into the computer, make sure to get some 3rd party Cab Impulses because the stock ones are not the best. Thankfully Line 6 included the ability to load aftermarket ones into the Helix super easily.
Awesome, just followed you man Just a heads up, I basically abandoned my soundcloud and have been working on my first official release since late 2017, Its essentially my first and last release with my current "project", cuz I am starting a new one, so just look at everything thats there as what I was doing in highschool and college. Im just not releasing anything so I can start doing it officially through a label
Heres the elevator pitch on my new project tho, I feel like you will appreciate what I'm aiming for Its a cross between Soad, Rammstein, Pendulum, and Destroid. We are playing midi guitars, and its just insane thrashing synth basses and 80s-esque synthwave elements, but slams like a truck, and there is absolutely a visual aspect (because fuck yeah, its midi, my guitar can trigger lights, and I'm so fucking gonna use this total next level future shit to its fullest potential)
Imagine you saw a 4 piece band consisting of guys that look like pic related, and they are holding glowing guitars, The sound is exactly what you are imagining. And the best part, the midi guitar finally came in, and yes, It works in drop tuning, so this is just a matter of time Im fuckin HYPE
Then wait, who was phone And like bruh The flavor of water is its temperature
Luke Peterson
Fuck yeah dude I dig the concept!
I've been saying for a while that using midi guitars, keyboards, drums, etc as electronic instruments could bring an appreciation back to live performance that seems to have been lost over the past couple of decades. Hell, it could bring rock and metal back into the mainstream again. Going with a Pendulum and Rammstein sound is the perfect way to bring that shit in too.
Nice idea, you're pushing the ball forward. I like it.
Jose Taylor
bruuhh
Oliver Brooks
Look, Im always gonna feel more comfortable with guitar than piano, but all i have to say is that I had no idea if the keisel midi guitar we bought for 3k was going to even work, after we had bad results with the fishman triple play in drop tunings (it works but its better for a jazz guitarist who has finess) and we got a roland GR55 synth unit
Holy shit, its indescribable how good this shit got. Its unfuckingbelievably accurate with fret tracking, it works down to drop B tunings. The best part, you can retrofit any guitar with the same system, its a hexaphonic piezo system that just is glued to whatever bridge style you have, it costs under 300, and only requires a descrete routing hole under the bridge for the cables, and another jack
Oh and thanks! I was always in love with cyberpunk shit and I personally believe the coolest method to play bass oriented heavy edm was how excision, downlink, and KJ sawka performed when they did Destroid youtu.be/wGPOxs3HfKw
Blake Martin
Love the tone of your guitar, and the subtle melodies. Very nice stuff, also want to keep you in contact for sure.
Matthew Jackson
That's sick man, I need to look into that. Also this is fucking insane. I want to see more of this out there.
I gotta go to bed for tonight but it was cool talking dude!
Thanks man! Gave you a follow back. Hit me up anytime. Your shit is really cool too. Nice and melodic.
Alexander Ramirez
I'm not an expert on this genre, or have good enough reference to really be sure, but I honestly only have a few problems that I can hear, mostly minor. Again, I'm only available to use a phone as reference atm, but I followed you, so lemme listen when I'm at my desk tomorrow, I can't say for sure what I'm hearing but all I can say is that they are very minor, and honestly, you can probably argue it is intentional, and I'd have no problem with that, either way I'd say you're damn close to be ready for mastering man, this is pretty solid from what I can hear THATS WHAT IM SAYIN Like holy fuck, Im a metal guitarist turned synth basist. I cannot begin to explain how this is exactly the way I always dreamed of being able to perform my music. Fuck DJ booths, this is objectively the right way to do this
Thomas Nguyen
>Fuck DJ booths, this is objectively the right way to do this
EXACTLY. THANK YOU.
goodnight for real this time though lmao
Carson Scott
Hey its your guy's regular house/ dubstep guy that hasnt posted in a while. i bought a decent pair of headphones but i didnt try to make anything until today whipped this up in about 4 hours in a focused grind. got a good outline of the track im trying to make and id love your guy's feedback
What's a good software for removing compression artefacts? I found a sample I'd like to use (from a radio show), but the source isn't good and I need to mitigate that flangy sound around 4 kHz. Applying an EQ won't do (and it alters the sound too much). I think there are VST for that, like RX7, but I think their demo liitations are shit.
Speaking of izotope, I can't believe they already released a new neutron (and ask 150+ $ for an upgrade). They have good products (too bad most of them are abandonware now) but their selling strategies are horrendous.
Sebastian Perez
Good job. If I were you, I'd probably try to add more low end elements (I think it's a little lacking in that department) and make it sound more witch house-y just to see. But I don't know what you're trying to do, so it's probably good as it is.
Austin Jackson

i've been heavily listening to four tet for the past couple of months and it's totally fucked up my view on music production. most of his songs just make me go 'wait wait wait, you can do that?' it's crazy. the guy is so creative in song structure and surprising the listener, impeccable choice of sounds and sample sources and very catchy grooves. really making me want to step my game a whole lot. its crazy. any other producers like this? that just totally surprised you when you were first discovering them with how 'this sound is even possible'? basically i'm looking for music recommendations from /prod/ that are focused on creative productions
Easton Brooks
Probably Matthew Herbert if you like Four Tet, maybe also some of Paul Woolford's Special Request stuff.
Carson Gray
instaud.io/3Mxn >meme trap I know Please tell me how to improve. This is more or less a finished beat.
Grayson Cruz
it totally depends on what you are recording. if you are using an sm58 on female vocals, you are gonna eq very differently from if you were using the sm58 to record a snare drum.
just use your ears to find what sounds good alone and in context of the other instruments. there are no strict rules, other than don't clip.
if you feel like switching it up, try using distortion as an EQ. tchad blake does this with sans amp plugins a lot.
Dylan Thompson
My bandmates say they want to do the best EP that we can even if it takes long, but then we're recording and the singer forgot his guitar pedal and he wants to record his part with my multifx's shitty distortion because he can't be bothered to record it again, it's too much hassle
Alexander Smith
I've compared a rode nt1a and a shure m57 on vocals and acoustic, along with stereo mic'd rode m5's. i like the shure on both.
what space are you recording in? the big reason i did not like the condenser was it picks up so much room there are some problem frequencies. i am in a really bad room to record in technically. plaster walls, perfect square, no damping. if you are in a quiet space and have room treatment, you might have different experiences.
Jackson Butler
I need help recording my band They're lazy druggy fucks and I'm a big nerd perfectionist but I don't want to be a bossy asshole They decided to record at my home studio when they heard a track I made on my own. They came and took a few takes to get the whole song and the I said let's try to get a better one and they went lmao you're not making me record this again are you lol. And while tracking they saw my bedroom and went you have no room treatment the studio gear is better we'll record with him
Jackson Nguyen
>we'll record with him Who's "him"?
Xavier Martin
The guy of the studio we rehearse at. We were recording with him but went to record at my bedroom after they heard my track and record only drums at the studio
Joshua Scott
>GIVE feedback dont use FLstudio faggot
Levi Ortiz
I was going for early 90's ambient trance atmosphere, but yeah I can see witch house in there. I don't know anything about creating trap beats though and majority of modern WH has them. Any way thanks and I'm glad you liked it.
I like the density, it all gets pretty tight past the intro. You definitely put feelings into the song. Chord structure is pretty repeatable (up-down-up-down) through the whole song, maybe try a little variety and get into chord theory if you haven't already. Also what happens in 50s is repeated intro with added pads, nothing new happens and I feel like the song kind of losses it's tension. I know it's an intro to the second part, so maybe add something that introduces the sound that begins in 1:05. I don't know much about mastering, but it sounds good to me, and thats what counts I guess.
Gabriel Morales

listen to this guy the 990 is pretty hard to beat until you want to spend $1000 or more. Just back a good bit away from the mic when you want to scream.
David Anderson
Thanks man, really appreciate it
Aaron Baker
Jesus christ you monkey just record at the studio where they have proper equipment and spaces to record.
Thomas Reed
cheers!
Jason Thomas
hahahaha. you beat me to it. maybe he needs the droogs
Joshua Lopez
seriously what? dude this is poor advice to a producer noob. never use a m57 to record vocals unless its your one & only mic
Ayden Campbell
>never use a m57 to record vocals unless its your one & only mic Why?
Bentley Sullivan
if they really say this they aren't about that life. don't break up with them but keep them as a side bitch until something better comes along
Christian Brown
Working with them will get you nowhere. My best friend was a dipshit (lazy, stubborn, no direction and so on, but very pretentious) when it comes to making music and ended up literally hating him for it. The time I wasted with him is irreplaceable and since it was during my first years as a musician, I shared his narrow vision of making music for a long time (I lived in the middle of nowhere, so not a lot of good influences).
Isaac Carter
do a bit of web research. or do a course to learn about it all. what i will tell everyone, get a quality broadcaster with high pass filter built in. its the go unless you have access to proper vocal booth & $1000s for a studio fit out
Cooper Wilson
SUNDAY, ME AND SINGER WILL RECORD GUIDE TRACKS AT MY ROOM
HE CALLED ME BEFORE LEAVING HIS HOUSE IF HE COULD RECORD WITH MY LES PAUL JUST SO HE DIDNT HAVE TO BRING HIS (HE CAME WITH HIS CAR, NOT EVEN WALKING)
I EVEN INSISTED ON RECORDING WITH MY TELE SINCE IT WAS FUCKING GUIDE TRACKS BUT HE WANTED MY BEST GUITAR
HE ARRIVED WITH THE BASSIST AND DIDN'T REMEMBER WE HAD DECIDED WE'LL DO GUIDE TRACKS, IN FACT HE FORGOT WHAT GUIDE TRACKS ARE AND THOUGHT IT WAS TOO MUCH WORK TO RECORD THE SAME THING AGAIN LATER
AND THEN HE PLAYED IT WITH HIS MONKEY HAND AND BROKE MY A STRING AND BLAMED MY GUITAR
I JUST LEFT THE BAND'S FACEBOOK GROUP TO NEVER JOIN A BAND AGAIN
I should have never gone outside, gonna put more effort at singing so I can do acoustic at bars
well theres another red flag. if serious musicians dont prioritise their money to buy their own quality gear - fuck em. i wouldnt lend him shit. this dude sounds like a fucking loser when it comes to music production.
Charles Perez
fuck off freek why don't you post your imaginary broked a gibson istead
Michael Parker
For what?
Well he isn't a producer just singer/guitarist/songwriter
Nathan Torres
he broke a string. but thats generally proof that he's a fucking try hard thrasher. if i lent any guitar to anyone and they broke a string, and were not of a joe satriani shred ability - i would fucking kick the shit outa them
Wyatt Nguyen
it takes enormous amounts of strength to break an a string. i don't buy it
Xavier Cook
Lmao ill post pic in 3 hours when I get home
Fun enough I broke the A string yesterday when I played a bit on my acoustic. It's just too quiet playing softly
Ethan Russell
or he plays like a fucking aspy thrasher. which means he's fucked at playing guitar. new or old strings. you dont need a floyd rose ibanez to overstretch & break strings
Nicholas Rodriguez
tell him to fuck off. you dont owe this incel any proof. what gauge set & brand of string do you use btw?
Depends on what your purposes are. As a former ProTools user, Reaper is pretty much a ProTools clone except it doesn't crash every two seconds like PT does. If your needs are more oriented towards recording, editing, songwriting, mixing, or mastering, then something like Reaper, Logic, or Cubase would suit those needs perfectly.
For all things that are heavily related to MIDI usage, like modern hip-hop styles and EDM, FL Studio and Ableton are damn near unbeatable. For anything having to do with a live show such as running a lightshow or porting backing tracks to FOH, both Reaper and Ableton are tied for me.
10s, Stage brand The singer asked that very same question right after breaking the string
Gabriel Bailey
Except that reaper doesn't come with stuff like ampsims and analog emulators, at least not one's worth a shit
Tyler Ward
How the hell do you use reaper for a live show or lightshow
Ryan Perez
I've actually been toying around this idea, been meaning to buy a mic so I can record over my house/techno inspired "bedroom" pop sounds. In terms of lyrics I'm planning on singing about stupid stuff regarding my life, stuff passing by my window, and really repetitive stuff similar to that of footwork lyrics.
Jonathan Butler
wtf is stage brand? nvm i'm over this
Isaac Ortiz
Oh I don't care about that. Already had all the outboard gear and plugins I could want before I started using it anyways.
Besides, if you're starting with NOTHING, the Waves collection is easy as fuck to pirate, along with damn near any other plugin out there that you could possibly want.
And actually I've found myself using the the free VST and JS plugins more and more these days. They're surprisingly good. Dunno when you last used it.
I use it to set up in-ear mixes by routing the live audio to individual passthrough tracks, then sending those to separate submixes customized to each musician; each submix gets sent out a different stereo pair from the back of the interface and gets sent to wireless IEM units.
Also use it to send tracks such as orchestra or synth parts to FOH and do light control with MIDI. Sometimes I also record the live show. Depends on if my band wants to do it. All of this happens at the same time. Reaper is super stable and well suited for it.
Forgot to respond to you
>the 990 is pretty hard to beat until you want to spend $1000 or more.
Apart from mentioning Ableton (which is the best), i dont know whats right about your post. ProTools would only crash because youre a poorfag with crap setup, or you dont have a genuine dongle
Thomas Wilson
Can i get some feedback on this clip?
Joshua Cruz
this might be baby's first to some user's but: >death grips industrial with very little "music" in the traditional sense at times, sound design, creative sampling, good song structures >autechre just overall wtf, kings of idm, don't need to explain this >Arca sound design, "abstract" song structures, somewhat collage like >flying lotus wonky, takes dillas off kilter grooves to the next level
>never use a m57 to record vocals where the fuck did that come from lmao
I still remember making the connection after you pointed out an instaud.io you posted.... shitposters are shitproducers :^)
Zachary Russell
>I still remember making the connection after you pointed out an instaud.io you posted.... I don't remember doing that. What was it?
Bentley Powell
I was on the newest generation (at the time) of Mac Pro while using it. idk what to tell ya.
I fought with PT for 4 years before finally giving up on it. Throw anything more than a few plugins in the project and the bitch would crash. I constantly had to render tracks out over and over just to avoid the crashing.
Dominic Thompson
did you have it racked to an avid 96 i/o. Also protools is extremely RAM hungry. like 16-32GiG
Noah Brooks
Look guys I put a fair amount of effort into my joke tracks, the least you could do is spare a brother a (you) telling me to kill myself.
Aaron James
He's a BR poorfag, the strings he buys are repackaged used strings from the US.
Jeremiah Cox
Arrangement and sounds are interesting enough but it's utterly lacking in low end, kinda like you ran it through an AM radio mask in the master.
It's the weekend , schools out (not that I'm in school but whatever), smoke a fat one and open the DAW boys
lets do this
Noah Campbell
Yeah the sub has to have been the most rushed part right now. Track is completely unmixed and unmastered atm. Was coming up with ideas for a breakdown section but i think its really an EQ issue with what youre referring to. I really cut off a lot of the low end from the lead so its literally just the sub channel playing under it.
I can return feedback if anyone wants it just reply
Jack Lee
clyp.it/otdcgf24 Just tell me a song that sounds like this so I can get inspo. I have free time to actually record this weekend.
>clyp.it/rzn1acs5 echo the motif but faster, in a higher octave? IDK, just bascally rework that ""riff"" (it's kinda bland). The snare at 1:50 onward sure has a distracting fucking crack to it.. In 4 mins and I'd say just rework some sound selection in general
>clyp.it/5hfdoq3q widen this up please. 1:42 synth is snoozey. Also don't just loop shit out for 4 minutes for the sake of it
Joshua Powell
Faggot
Nolan Cook
>don't just loop shit out for 4 minutes I was under the impression this is a key stylistic point of progressive house.
Ethan Bennett
>What was it? bad lol
run everything through different kinds of distortion a fuck load of *subtle* ambience, layers the fuck out shit ... do you have specific sounds in mind? I fucked with tds-fragile hard for a while lol
woke up at 2:00, just finished my coffee-Apex routine, let's get it mang 8)
Kayden Allen
>bad lol Could you please find it in the archive? I really don't remember it.
Levi Powell
Retard no life dipshit
Cameron Diaz
... if you're not reason fag i'm wrong lol it wasn't anything that stood out, it was just noodling or something
you said you were pretty obvious before and basically i'm just slow
... i don't know what i'd search to find it, that was months ago
Cameron Thomas
what sub?
William Adams
Yeah that was what I was going for but if it’s too boring then I failed at the goal
Kayden Bailey
I think I was using a Saffire Pro with version 9 at the time if I remember correctly. Also was using whatever amount of RAM came on the machine at the time. I can't remember how much that was.
I got it from a collector in mint condition, with the hardshell case, for only $350 Right place right time kinda story with it
Jacob Adams
Heroin
Lucas Reyes
pretty sure he only did it by mistake that once lol way more of an alcoholic
Landon Collins
Phm is all about the right gear / emulation (also resampling everything at 12bit then reduce pitch) DWS is all samples from pop songs, movies, phone sex operators, and a bunch of Kurzweil synth patches. Fragile is layers upon layers of guitars (like 40+ guitar tracks in one song), nord leads, and early bad vst plug-ins.
Andrew Jackson
How did Tront process his vocals? Was is it just some generic Lexicon reverb on PHM and dry plus distortion on TDS/Broken?
Sidenote, Fixed is an amazing remix album. I love the way they chop up the vocals in Gave Up
David Watson
>dry plus distortion on TDS/Broken? i can't remember a source for this but try stuff like overdrives and tube screamers
fixed is hella underrated, i prefer it to broken actually :3
Joshua Sanders
Aside from >Finding a niche sound to milk for a maximum of 2 albums and then fade into obscurity And >Making formulaic but well-produced genre-based tracks that might get into some semi-famous DJ's setlist
What even are the options for music producers? The prod meme died even faster than pop punk
Jonathan Howard
>The prod meme died even faster than pop punk explain
Lucas Butler
Learn how to make hits, and keep making them or make a label to find hit makers. Otherwise find another way to make money, cause the music industry doesn’t pay well compared to other fields.
Nathan Brown
My cousin did Meth in the early 2000s and made tracks, enjoy
instaud.io/3MG4 quick song with a lame fade-out ending. thoughts?
Brandon Hill
I like the beat, but the semi-chromatic arpeggios sound kind of fucky
Jacob Foster
You
Benjamin Myers
i had the brilliant idea to record myself crying into my pillow last night. transposed it up 19 ticks and used it as folly for this mix i'd been working on.
Charles Ward
i would use if you shared it :^)
Benjamin Kelly
sounds pretty video-gamey. I like it. Just needs some shit to make it sound bigger. Probably reverbs and shit and more sense of space.
Ryder Hill
How do you make this sound at the time in the video? So I'm pretty sure this is a granular synthesizer playing a sample and just adjusting knobs for it, but I want a better idea of exactly how. I love how old and creepy this shit sounds.
Are you some famous electronic musician who comes here to dab on us? >instaud.io/3MFN
Levi Edwards
>granular i mean, yeah, you could implement that if you want for bonus coolness but that's not really the sound
slowed sample>high resonance filter>tube distortion with high bias.... probably additional low passing
dynamic tube in ableton has an envelope that adjust how reactive it is to dynamics, pretty useful for sounds like that.
Jayden Smith
I say that because it's clearly getting faster and higher pitched as it goes. Reminds me of when I used The Mangle. I don't hear the distortion. Maybe it's my untrained ear. I'm not even sure what high bias means either. Care to elaborate?
Ian James
>it's clearly getting faster and higher pitched as it goe i wouldn't say *clearly* change in the filter maybe distorted resonance is an easy sound to pick up on once you know it
i'm not sure of the technical meaning of bias, but it sounds like the sound is "breaking up." it's not really a "distortion depth" thing, it's like the character of it... but not the tone
Lincoln Murphy
what else to add? already plan on resampling the lead in spots (also that sound)
I'll have to look out for it more. Thanks for the explanation.
Thomas Johnson
uuuh i have nothing to say. my music is okay and im improving at a good steady pace. how about you gay fellas?
Levi Cox
Kinda in the same boat but I'm seriously behind in producing practice. Still slowly reading the DMM and after that I actually bought a counterpoint book. Made a couple okay-ish loops yesterday and a not too great track but at least I got some sound design practice. Today it's been alternating between learning how to work some theory plugins and kinda/maybe kicking around a track idea.
>clearly getting faster and higher pitched as it goes
Hallmark of delay time being tweaked, maybe using an analogue modelling delay with feedback cranked up to the point when it starts to break up. Googling "delay with feedback" will probably point you to some examples like this one to start with:
wow, that produced a lot of pretty cool sounds. So how exactly is this achieved? Just using a metric fuck ton of delay?
Christopher Sullivan
Yeah, especially analogue delay where the sound deteriorates with each repeat - high amounts of feedback and then raising and lowering the delay time gives the pitch/repeat speed variations.
what is the real difference between analogue and digital delay? Like can I even have an analogue delay in my DAW? Can't I only use digital delay?
Anthony Gomez
Digital can repeat indefinitely with no loss of quality Analog cant
Oliver Ramirez
When Propellerhead dropped their Polystep Sequencer or whatever, I felt immense shame for owning Reason. I was thinking about getting a deluxe memory man this morning; that settles it.
Parker Martin
Personally I like things that do theory work for me because: 1. it makes my life easier 2. they can be great for inspiration if you just clown around a while
Hey, I think that thing is pretty cool. Still undecided if it's worth 70 dillies to me tho. The other new one that's like a mix between Scales&Chords and Autotheory is seriously tempting me too.
Ian Morales
How do you write interesting melodies and harmonies if you're locked into a key? Fuk da playaz, homie.
Henry Sullivan
how do i sell my soul to a label
Jordan Gutierrez
you need to put your soul into your music first
Elijah Lee
>locked to a key Listen to more jazz and then youll understand why I'm laughing *breathes in*
Christopher Miller
Fuck the label, go full /Johnson/ and bring a guitar to a dirt crossroad and call the devil
You aren't locked though, you can remote or automate key changes on S&C, and the Polynote can have a different key in every pattern slot (or no key). The Chordline one has a real neat concept to it, where your black keys choose from 5 banks of chords (or keys) you play with the white keys.
Dominic Gonzalez
>remote or automate key changes This sounds like it would make writing music even more complicated that having no restrictions. >or no key This defeats the purpose though. >Chordline one has a real neat concept This one does sound neat.
instaud.io/3MJf why the fuck am i so untalented. this is me trying my hardest - after F O U R years of producing now
Luis Adams
>instaud.io/3MJf Why do you want to make spooky halloween music? If that's not what you want to make, why are you making it and what would you rather make?
Jacob Gray
this was supposed to be like something from tyler the creator's bastard. thats how far off my skills are, after four years.
Evan Adams
>F O U R years of producing fuck i feel great about my progress now :^)
is that really the best you've done though? I refuse to believe that's 4 years of even somewhat consistent producing; that has to be the low end for you or you barely ever practice
Carter Fisher
i have practiced nearly every day, this is the best i can come up with. i want to fucking kill myself.
Jace Lee
That was just a poor choice of instruments. Use some good ones, keep it minimal, and see what you can do. spitfireaudio.com/labs/
Carter Hernandez
okay for real was that a Demarcus track you posted just to larp as a failed producer?
I know people love the fuck out of labs but it was really just "eh" to me aside from the piano for.... that one sound it does
regardless that's a really shitty recommendation to make for somebody trying to make that style of hip-hop bro wtf lol
Jonathan Flores
no, i would show you project file screenshots but i just deleted it out of shame
Eli Perry
Sidechain the organ and bass with the kick drum.
Use sends, put a full wet reverb on one send, delay on another.
Aiden Peterson
>regardless that's a really shitty recommendation to make for somebody trying to make that style of hip-hop bro wtf lol You can't build on a shitty foundation.
Grayson Watson
i did sidechain all of the other instruments to the drum, already
Levi Nelson
I agree, but those are an inappropriate choice of instruments
>polishing a turd >just sidechain lmao
yeah i just read "yes, I have no proof that I made this"
I see you with those boom bap samples :^) ... i might not have believed you otherwise lmao
>live 8 skin
why the FUCK does your drum rack look like that???? first of all there's a god damn order everybody naturally knows your drums go in: kick on c1 following snares and top percussion you have 0 shit going on to mix it apparently
all your shit is just straight copy and pasted??? you should know better than that
where are your fucking folder shortcuts???
I see this as further evidence that Demarcus is a larp and now it's come out that the user posting as him has let it slide that he's actually been producing for 4 years.......... interesting
Easton King
ok so to wrap this all up, should i just kill myself now bros
Jeremiah Nguyen
>tfw you realize a certain famous kpop producer picks keys based on cup size
this is exactly what ive done for the past four years. believe me, it was rougher the first two than it is now. back then, i didnt know how to program drums at all. i didnt know that that basic beat was kick snare kick kick snare. i used to just throw random drums in and program notes in randomly and hope for the best. it was all like "SNARE KICK TOM TOM KICK SNARE HI-HAT KICK" this is the best ive been able to do thus far. i swear im not fuckin demarcus.
and i did mix it, i fucked with the track gains and shit in the mix station area.
Michael Sanders
>i didnt know that that basic beat was kick snare kick kick snare. Demarcus said that exact same thing bro, you've already been found out
u can't troll me
Ryan Butler
i dont even know who demarcus is. i have only been in this general a couple times to check if what i make is bad for amateur standard (i see it is) i just want some help. also to address the whole "copy paste" thing, is that bad?
Charles Stewart
holy fuck read the pastebin watch some tutorials dude
I told you all that Demarcus was Phaser's /prod/ killing golem and none of you believed.
Ian Green
I feel like Scales might be good for harp-like glissandos but that's about it. Just set your scale and swipe your keyboard. Am I missing anything?
Hunter Fisher
How they hell do you do vocals. Ive been fucking around for months but it doesnt matter what effects I use or how much reverb my vocals just sound like some geek in his bedroom seriously cannot get over this hump.
Nathan Nguyen
>my vocals just sound like some geek in his bedroom seriously cannot get over this hump. Stop being a geek in your bedroom.
Ryder Scott
thanks
Robert Garcia
Could be any number of things from the tuning or timbre of your voice to the type of mic you're using. Do you have any examples? I could help you diagnose the problem.
Luis Roberts
bump
James Collins
>used to make music years ago >no theory knowledge but I could achieve good results by ear >don't make music for a few years >try again today and everything is good except the chords are worse than before I started making music >mfw I forgot how to harmony What do I do? Should I just cheat and use a plugin that makes chords for me?
It definitely can do that, but it has other uses. The way it's presented is that it makes chords easier for the non piano player to record, and can be used to quantize your clumsy fat-fingered efforts into a given key.
I use an instance pretty much every time I open Reason, usually to putz around until I have an idea, but also to practice playing a scale (set the note reject on) and to quantize midi that's been randomized or shifted.
I made a whole fucking album but I have no friends to listen to my garbage How do I advertise myself and whatever? I dont have any social media or sound cloud or any of that
Ryan Williams
If it's really good, send it to a label. If it's okay good, send it to a netlabel. Maybe. What are you thinking?
Robert Brown
Ah I hadn't thought about labels at all Think I'll do my research on netlabels and such and hopefully they'll reply
Jonathan Jones
Good luck. Depending on the genre, you might be able to find some blogs or YouTube channels as well that could feature/review your album. You'll likely need to start small though and it may help to develop a social media presence so people checking you out can look it up and see that you're serious about this.
Jonathan Roberts
>Not just learning piano
Carter Gutierrez
>just learning piano >just As if years of consistent practice and study are easier than just using a program to do it for you...
Please refer to this picture and its filename.
Connor Fisher
lol why are we doing /prod/ when in 5/10 years a child can be doing the EXACT same thing we are doing but only with a tablet
Ayden Torres
Because it's not 2024/2029 yet.
Jacob Harris
Based.
Kayden Smith
Wait I thought we were all teenage bedroom producers leaping as depressed 20-30 somethings.
Lincoln Thompson
You got it all wrong pal. We're depressed 20-30 somethings larping as teenage bedroom producers.
Andrew Powell
Prolly not, when I was 4 years in, I was just starting to find my footing and gain a sliver of confidence Im now 10 years in and I have an ego problem that I have to keep in check at this point Just keep at it, the better question is "how much do you want this?" >this shit is like everest, if youre the last of the group to reach the top, does it fucking matter?
Let everyone you know that you're one, and get teenage bedroom pussy.
James Gutierrez
GET OUT OF MY HEAD
Justin Turner
well u can try making 16 bar loops
Jason Hernandez
I mean, the transition to the next 'part' that is different but similar enough to be in the same song/flow is the part I'm struggling with. I can shit out ideas for days but I want to go in thousands of different directions.
A little practice, my first time actually applying music theory How does this sound to you guys? How do i vary it up? I feel like the chords are too repetitive. The drum beat too, that's a sample
>clyp.it/gp1b4tmb?token=ece5109c5465790cd3d89c2b64c34d09 Concept is really cool as a sketch. No problem with a simple drum beat but I feel like you need to get drum sounds that sound like they belong with the rest of the piece. Right now your drum samples are super clean which makes them pop like crazy.
Brayden Bailey
do random inversions so its not the same chords over and over and randomize the velocity so it doesnt sound like it was made in a DAW
