>They were THE gateway for thousands and thousands of kids all over the world to get into extreme metal, whether those kids want to admit it or not.
>You go find the biggest death metal snob you know, the biggest black metal hipster you can find, and if they're between the ages of 25 and 30, there's a 98% chance that there's a Suicide Silence shirt in a box at their parents house, because they wore that thing to school four times a week when they were 16
Is he right?
They were THE gateway for thousands and thousands of kids all over the world to get into extreme metal...

It's too fucking accurate. It hurts.
I've never fucking heard of them.
no
lol I’m 34 so not sure if this is true but if so it’s sad
unfortunately
Absolutely. Deathcore isn't given its due diligence on many parts of this board.
not me. For me it went:
nu-metal -> thrash metal -> metalcore and death metal at around the same time -> grindcore -> power violence
after having been obsessed with power violence for a couple of years (ages 15-17) I started to listen to mellower and mellower music. As a 15-19 year old I kind of grew to despiste nu-metal and later all kinds of scene-core (deathcore, slam, white belt grind, etc), which pushed me away towards punkier and punkier stuff since (and this might've been my brain blowing it out of proportion, or entirely accurate) it seemed like that stuff was taking over metal and there wasn't much else going on. Thanks to that I became obsessed with power violence, though.
Great band but they were only the gateway for Deathcore genre and straight edge kids
I started with black metal like bathory
*thousands and thousands of SJW faggots
Decapitated was the only good deathcore band
I've always hated them
Job for a Cowboy was the better band, and they had the good sense to move on from deathcore
naw I got into extreme metal from moving to abrasive free jazz and then to Zorn's grindy stuff
that and probably finding stuff like Opeth while looking for prog rock
Literally who
I'm 27 and I was never into this shit. What a hack.
I got into metal when I watched that episode of Spongebob with this song and bought the CD.
youtube.com
Then I found a Megadeth tape, So Far So Good So What, and it took off from there.
Never heard of Suicide Silence, sounds like some My Chemical Romance shit.
>My Chemical Romance
Yeah, sounds really similar to me.

FUCK no, what the fuck? This guy thinks because he has always been a weird poseur with an obsession for teencore that everybody else was too.
I'm 30 years old this year, Suicide Silence wasn't even a band when I was discovering death and black metal, WHICH I got into because I was into thrash metal, which I was introduced to through Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax. Morbid Angel Altars Of Madness was probably the first death metal I ever bought as a young teen and at that point I had never even heard of Suicide Silence, in fact the whole melodic metalcore thing was only just starting to blow up, "deathcore" hadn't even become a trend yet. And when I did discover who Suicide Silence were, I felt like A. it was gay teen targeted shit and B. I was too old for it anyway
Sounds more like a bad Slipknot cover band tbf
The rise of deathcore coincided with me losing interest in metal
MCR is better.
Nope. The cleansing had 2 good songs and the singer was a retard, he deserved to die doing what he did. They sold out and tried to go nu metal and it fucked em, deservedly so. Now northlane is going nu metal as well, and I blame suicide silence. Everything they ever wrote prior to YOLO era had already been done better by carnifex despised icon and a hundred other bands. Seeing people nostalgia far about SS just let's you know they're a poser, it's like seeing someone who pretends they're into death metal now nostalgia fag about We Came As Roman's. Hot topic tier middle school garbage music for people with no taste and no intent on actually exploring the genre
holy shit lmao
Probably on here. Some kids had older friends or uncles who got them straight into extreme metal, or they just found out about it through research on their own. I don't know why people need everyone else's experience to be the same as theirs. I'd bet that's not true at all, most people who listened to suicide silence probably still do, or listen to sunbather or some shit.
i got into metal by listening to panzerfaust by darkthrone
Damn, thats a rough intro. What made you keep going?
umm no, I listen to old school death metal and thrash. I never liked deathcore, it's too streamlined and boring, all vocals sound the same, and these "breakdowns" are shit compared to straight up death metal. So go swing on off your 8 ft long hoop earlobes and fuck off.
idk i liked the vocals for some reason. the issue with metal for me is and has always been the vocals. i liked slayer before (because of the vocals) but i wasn't into metal.
also the instrumentals were unlike anything i had heard before, especially en vind av sorg and hans siste vinter so it was nice to hear something different. i still dont really like most metal and i wouldnt call myself a "metalhead" since i listen to pretty much much only some black metal and doom metal
Between 25 and 30 it's more likely to be numetal tier garbage.
Yeah really. Most people get into this kind of music when they're like 16 or so, if you're 25-30 then what was the closest popular thing would have been like Slipknot, Mudvayne, even Hatebreed or Lamb Of God, or then popular fringe extreme shit like Cradle Of Filth or Dimmu Borgir. Suicide Silence put out their first album in fucking 2007.....this guy is trying to slide the scale to make it seem like it was all guys in their 20s listening to that shit, not teenaged kids, because HE was that guy.
>because HE was that gay.
Well, that works too
the first metal band i listened to was metallica when i was 9 and i never ever listened to any genre with "core" in its name. death angel was the second.
to this day if it has "core" in it, it's guaranteed to be shit. and not metal.
on the other hand, thrash metal more or less defined metal and everything that can be recognized as metal is an offshoot of it at this point
thrash rules. \m/
theyre not deathcore retard
finn is such a faggot i swear
Pretty accurate honestly!
Personally I got my start with Guitar Hero 3/Rockband track list and worked my way up towards ""deeper cuts"", but most of my friends totally had a scene kid phase and have fat nostalgia for these bands!
Kinda funky when me n a homie are both boppin to some album n they say "yo this reminds me of emmure" when i have some other more ""credible"" metalcore band like converge in mind
29 started with dimmu bodom and blind guardian. Never heard this crap once
RIP Mitch Lucker, he was actually a fantastic vocalist. deathcore is what it is, genrecore, but damn he was very strong
Never hurt of them.
Yep, one of my favorites when I was a teenager, too bad I've never owned a SS t-shirt though
Black Metal is my favourite genre, but I am no hipster nor am I that young, I am 32.
Perhaps because of this, I have never heard of Suicide Silence.
What got me into Extreme Metal was Industrial music when I came across Aborym.
Based and redpilled
I don;t have any SS shirts, but I do have some NSDAP badges
Never got into emo faggotry, my gateway was Metallica's MoP and Maiden's FotD.
>then popular fringe extreme shit like Cradle Of Filth
i stole a cradle of filth album off my parents when i was a kid. never even heard a suicide silence track.
Unitonically my intro to metal was Burzum, Sunn O))), Boris, Earth, Agalloch, Ulver, and Peste Noire... all which I heard around 15/16 still havent dug much deeper
So many very metal patrician kings in this thread. Please recognize their superiority.
Yes. Suicide Silence is a gateway band for a lot of kids to get into better extreme music and I appreciate them for that
Suicide Silence is fucking gay and only turbo-autists who type "XD rawr shit" to creep on girls listen to them.
The truth of his point really just sums up to that they were popular with teens who didn't know better. That doesn't make them praise worthy in anyway, if it wasn't them or would of been someone else. For the most part any kid who properly got into death/black was going to end up looking into it eventually for some reason or another. And no, I never got into them.
Gotta disagree with OP, this album kicked it off for me
this is how most hipsters get into metal
DevilDriver or bust.
My guy
I became interested in DM after hearing this record.
gateway bands are a myth, you're a poser
I'm 25, for me it went
Trad and Power > oldies and proto stuff Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Budgie, Deep Purple > Doom/Stoner/Sludge + 50s Black Man Blues > Grindcore (and its offsprings) and Crust Punk
I still do listen all the formers.
I never found the metal- and deathcore one bit enjoyable.
This may sound odd but both always came to as fake angry and too try-hard.
I can't exactly pinpoint what it is since metal is known for it's aggression all over but something in metal- and deathcore just jars me to no end.
Compared to Doom which imo just sounds genuinely angry and pissed off.

Meanwhile most metal got that bit of tongue-in-cheek attitude in harsh vocals.
Never listened to them or knew anyone who did and became an actual metal fan. Same goes for any other deathcore shit. If anything they just listen to slam now.
