uhhhhhhhhh yeah mate, I dunno what you've already tried, but definitely check out any of the albums already posted in this thread. Consider Exodus, Testament, Overkill, or Coroner. If you can't find anything you like in those, then maybe thrash ain't your thing.

I dunno, the ones I've tried all seem like a hot mess of sound where the riffs don't particularly stand out. Songs like Tornado of Souls or Symphony of Destruction, the riffs are in the foreground, distinct and to me sound really good... Maybe I'm just new to it all.

I feel like you need to give it time in that case. It sounds like you're at with metal where I was like a decade ago. Not saying that as a bad thing, but the more you listen, the less like a "whirlwind" it sounds.

I do like bands like Obscura, Archspire, Ne Obliviscaris, Opeth. I'm not super into metal, but I do enjoy it here and there. Maybe thrash just isn't my thing... I'd like to give it some more time though.

Those bands are all pretty cleanly produced. Most of this old school thrash is pretty raw, and I assume you wouldn't get much out of old school death metal either. Try out Vektor. They're proggy, tech thrash with a cleaner, more modern production.
