You don't have to eat a lot of books and biographies in general to come to such statements regarding Wagner, he's widely known for actually being one of the greatest yet I wouldn't say greatest IMHO for a reason: He always overorchestrated his works, yes, too many instruments for trying to achieve what he was writing in the sheet and usually failing in my opinion for doing so, also he got a lot of name for being liked by The Reich who during such times anything that Hitler listened was acquired by those looking for such ideal of a ruler and interested in what he would listen just as Nietzsche is also a Wagner lover I do respect a lot his works and masterpieces yet if you make me choose classical music I wouldn't go right away for Wagner, I could even invest myself in Rossini or Liszt to warm up or just plain go to sleep with Debussy Images compositions as I do from time to time yet I recall Scheherazade is really an strong contender against any other "Western" composer of the time and is not that the comparison with Beethoven 9th being the common choice for any known composer might be overrated for the same reason is just the way Scheherazade composition is more appealing to my ear.
