If you are talking about rap/hip hop, a majority of samples consist of Jazz, Blues, Soul, and Funk. not too often do I see samples used from outside of that except for the occasional song like tom tom clubs Genius of love which has been sampled in various hip hop and R&B songs.

NAYRT, but Kanye and Death Grips have both sampled a lot of progressive rock. For example, "Known For It" samples the bassline to "De Futura" by Magma.

I'm also curious what examples of good obscure music you had in mind when writing this post. Because 9/10 times people who refer to the music they like as "obscure" it isn't the case at all. People who post legitimately great and obscure albums/artists usually don't need to tell others they're obscure.
