Google, RYM, and Wikipedia identify it as one. But obviously you're the judge of what is and isn't a genre, so have you heard more than ten albums with a Viking metal style?

Generally the way I see it, it's a mix of few subgenres of metal with heavy inspiration from Nordic folk music. Obviously lyrical themes and imagery is also a big deal but that's part of the music too. I can understand not considering it as its own genre, but you can definitely define bands like Bathory, Windir, or early Enslaved as viking metal while still respecting them as black metal bands.

enslaved's first couple of albums were amazing, but i didn't really like the prog shit (Isa was pretty good tho) the first album is actually one of my most favorite album of all time

windir is amazing, especially considering that i normally hate overly-melodic music, i even listened to the demos. I remember when i first heard arntor i was blown away, just staring at the album cover and listening to it over and over. Their newest album is not as good as the first 3 imo

bathory from those bands i probably like least. first two albums are overrated as shit, under the sign is 9/10 masterpiece, hammerheart is fine, but im not a big fan of twilight at all. All the later viking albums were pretty boring desu. also I actually kinda like requiem

Nice taste I almost feel the exact same way. Despite being the least vikingish, Yggdrasill is my favorite Enslaved album, but obviously the other early ones are amazing like you said. Arntor is unreal, probably top 3 black metal albums for me. That album cover really is a beauty. As for Bathory I agree 100% that the self-titled and the Return are overrated. Under the Sign of the Black Mark is great and by far my favorite black metal of his, but I also love Blood on Ice for the Viking side of things.

Vikingtid og AnArki is probably my favorite lesser known Viking albums. You might like it despite being fairly melodic, somewhat of a poor mans Windir.
