What jazz album would you play for someone who’s a classical elitist that says jazz can’t be art music?

It's not intuitive, but I think avant-garde and free jazz doesn't make sense until you're more familiar with jazz form and convention

Good album, but hectic post bop would turn them off and generalize it as random noises. They might be more into classically influenced stuff like Bill Evans (or third stream)

Besides the obvious Bill Evans, Gil Evans, and Duke Ellington, I would also suggest the modern day combo of the three in Maria Schneider.

Stuff like Andrew Hill or Wayne Shorter with their own very specific composition patterns won't work unless the elitist is also used to the same for many post-modern atonal classical composers.

A classical elitest will reject everything, but I really like Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch

Bill Evans is too one-note, Duke Ellington is big-band, a bastardization of classical, and Gil Evans is also big band.

You need to show them something in line with the standard trio-sextet, not exceptions

Mary Lou Williams and Charlie Parker.

Big band being so close to classical is exactly what makes it work. Especially when it's more classical sounding big band like Schneider rather than more pop song sounding big band.

But classical fags don't want music that's sort of like classical but not really. They want jazz in the typical jazz format as tasteful as classical.

You can't generalize for the crowd. I listen to more classical music than anything and my preference in jazz reflects that in more composed works being my favorites like Mingus' Black Saint or Schneider's stuff on Thompson Fields or a Wayne Shorter/Andrew Hill type but that stuff, based on the classical listeners I hang out with, tends to go over their head from an analytical perspective unless they are used to listening to newer classical where the same philosophy exists of wildly different composition systems that don't exist in a straightforward tonal context.

I mean Shostakovich composed a couple pieces for the Soviet jazz orchestra if that counts

god-tier polyphonic compositions and thematic improvisation

Any of the Mingus albums between 57 and 63

Hybrid jazz/classical saxophone concerto written by a contemporary classical composer.

As a classical musician, classical elitists are honestly just short sighted idiots. Saying jazz can't be art music is full blown retard.

but I'd recommend Dhafer Youssef's Abu Nawas Rhapsody to anyone regardless of how retarded they are.

Who cares what classical cracker elitists think. Jazz is a black artform separate from conventional Western Classical standards, there is no need or desire to appease the enemy. This music is not for them.

You’re an absolute retard if you believe it’s a purely black genre. It’s a synthesis of black music as well as European classical and military marches.

Listen to this and tell me it isn't art.
Spoiler, you can't.

>tfw realizing I have become a wigger by acquiring a taste in jazz

the best argument against jazz is that it is degenerate drug infused nigger dance music

It's okay, Jamie Abersold will clean up the jazz scene

Based adorno

This album, and then I'd take said person for a ride on the El to K&A, walk how ever man blocks it'd take for them to get stabbed, them shout "welcome to jazzville bitch" over my shoulder, thanks next question

machine gun

Fuck classical nerds, they have a stick up their ass and don't understand the freedom of jazz.

Peter Brotzmann is the whitest jazz there is. He makes Benny Goodman look like Malcolm X

Make the etilist watch Cowboy Bebop or put Space Lion
