Joni Mitchell on Bob Dylan

>Musically he’s not very gifted. He’s borrowed his voice from old hillbillies. He’s got a lot of borrowed things. He’s not a great guitar player. He’s invented a character to deliver his songs.

Is she right?

Joni Mitchell has one good album

Why does she sound about 10

Blue, Court and Spark, Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Don Juan...

I don’t think so. Also in comparison with Dylan, she is a far superior songwriter, guitar player and vocalist

One more than Bob Dylan

Everything after Blue is cornball boomer shit

based birb poster

Are you joking? She perfected her sound with Hissing and Hejira.
Blue is certainly great but her jazz period is even better.

What if I told you that everything she said is true and that it in no way changes the greatness of Bob Dylan?

yup she is absolutely correct and Dylan is easily the greatest artists in the history of popular music

hey must be santa!

Whenever i hear someone say something as gay as this i always think back to that one scene from american psycho.

Dylan's hobo voice was gone by the electric trilogy. His BoB voice in particular is very unique imo.

>superior songwriter
Could agree with everything else but this. I'm even willing to say that at their primes they were equals (Dylan isn't untouchable) but she never outshined him from a lyrical perspective.

This is the true ultimate redpill

Maybe not from a lyrical perspective but she is a far more inventive/interesting composer. Musically I find her to be superior.

When talking about singer-songwriters lyrical prowress is usually the major factor.

So when talking about music we need to prioritize lyrics over composition? Joni was a singer-songwriter but her instrumentals were complex and innovative, and I think I will take that into consideration when comparing her with Bob.

I also like Bob, though, and I think he made some great, great songs, but it’s just a fact that his music was a lot more basic and, quite often, generic and lifeless.

While Joni Mitchell is a great, very talented musician Bob Dylan is a one off, a completely unique artist, the kind that only comes around every 500 years. He's one of the few actual artistic geniuses left. She's a bitter old cunt

>So when talking about music we need to prioritize lyrics over composition?
When talking about certain kinds of music, yes. The kind that the likes of Dylan, Cohen, Mitchell, Van Zandt, etc made is an example. I'll freely admit I don't listen to any of them for the music (that's not to say I don't like the music) yet I've listened to all of them for hundreds of hours.

And the only times Dylan's music has been lifeless was during the 80s and 00s.

That does sound like something she'd say. Most of those things are only insults in the mind of her and like-minded trash. It's obvious why people like her and the other folk pop artists get so bitter about Dylan being the only one of them who is still remembered even though he never sold his soul.

>she
>right

she's not wrong and he's still great in spite of those things. this is what she is saying. stop pulling shit out of context you nerds

She is literally just listing facts. Is this supposed to be controversial?

Anyone who insults Joni might as well be labeled an idiot.
Joni had plenty of success in the early 70s and the only reason she didn’t end up as popular as the other folk musicians of the time is that her music became more inaccessible and sophisticated, straying away from the immediate folk pop Dylan and others were playing then.

Dylan might be the pop legend, but Joni is the better musician of the two.

Just sounds like a jew really.

Neither Dylan or Mitchell really went pop by the time Mitchell came onto the scene.

Didn't joni invent the name Joni Mitchell

Based and redpilled

Joni just comes off as salty and jealous here desu. And a lot of it is just plain false, like her claim that he's "not great" at guitar.

She's someone who was playing guitar to Mingus in her prime, Dylan wasn't that good compared to her. He's not bad but that's not the same thing as being great, and honestly, I'd bet he'd agree with that sentiment.

bob is a great songwriter, nobody ever claimed anything else. not a great singer, not a great guitar player, maybe he's playing a character. but he still wrote so many classic songs, can't deny he was an elite songwriter.

Her best albums are the mid 70s jazz inspired ones. The ones featuring Jaco Pastorious and LA Express.

I do think Dylan is a superior lyricist. I don't think much of him as a musician but I wasn't mad when he got the literature nobel prize.

She’s absolutely right. Dylan is completely overrated and only normies would describe him as “the greatest” or even “one of the greatest” songwriters. Joni was always a way better lyricist and a better composer.

Yeah I don't think he meant genre pop, just accessible. The more into jazz she got the less accessible she got. Kind of a shame that Blue is her most iconic album really but it's still top tier.

I would argue that Dylan still didn't really go the accessible route (or at least not anymore than he had by that point), especially considering how his voice turned out even though that most likely wasn't a conscious decision on his part. The only album of his that sounds like it was chasing the times was Oh Mercy and that's because of the production which he's said he doesn't like.

Yeah I got you. I never really thought he was making any conscious decisions to be accessible, but he had a much longer span of mainstream relevance anyway.
Joni seemed to shun the mainstream success on purpose in favor of a different musical path but then got pissed that the mainstream didn't come with her but that was just Joni being Joni.

Bob Dylan wrote good songs rooted in American popular form and has memorable recordings. Joni has done nothing comparable.

So in other words you don't know her work or only know Blue? Do yourself a favor and check out some more of her stuff, if you appreciate Dylan you'll probs appreciate her stuff too.
I really hate to bust out the woman thing but I'm convinced that people that don't think they were ever comparable just don't like women or aren't familiar with her work. Unless you just mean that she was never gonna catch up to his status then yeah of course. Joni wasn't even American no matter how much she sang about Cali.

not that long ago a Herbie Hancock album of Joni Mitchell covers won all the grammies, and last week Morrisey released a covers album featuring a song from The Hissing of Summer Lawns (which was also the favorite album of Prince)
She may not be as big as Dylan, or as well known as him, but I don't think her status as a musician is at any risk, more like the opposite actually.
Musicians seem to like her.

Well yeah, that's the whole point
